A Floating World
Ukiyo-e, or Pictures of The Floating World was the term used to describe Japanese woodblock prints- the most famous being works by artists Utamaro, Hiroshige, and Hokusai. Ukiyo-e prints explored nature, landscape, architecture, and a world of pleasure and hedonism in Japan. Just as the Ukiyo-e woodblock print became a means to disseminate art from the 17th to the 19th century, digital video has become a universal medium in the 21st century. With this video, I have imagined a modern day Ukiyo-e.
I shot these images during April of 2016 in Tokyo, Kamakura, Nagoya, and Kyoto, Japan using a Pentax K50 camera and iPhone 6 plus.

Family Trip to Japan

Alison and I took our two kids, Harrison (9) and Charlotte (1) to Japan in April/May 2019. It was the first time each of us had been overseas. What better way than to jump straight in the deep end and go to Japan?
We began in Tokyo where we stayed for 8 nights. Getting around was quite daunting at first but we quickly got used to the train system. Highlights include:
• Odaiba – Both kids had a blast with the various displays at Teamlabs Borderless. We spent the rest of the day checking out the various sites including the Gundam statue.
• Shinjuku Gyoen – Plenty of space for the kids to stretch their legs and we both enjoyed the various gardens.
• Meiji Jingu/Sensoji Shrine – Both beautiful, Sensoji was incredibly busy which was no surprise.
• Practically everything we saw/did. The only thing I can recall us not enjoying was Harajuku/Takeshita Street, far too busy for our liking.
We then left for Matsumoto to visit the castle (my favourite castle of the trip) on the way to Kyoto where we stayed for 6 nights. Our entire Kyoto stay fell within “Golden Week”, it wasn’t as busy as we were led to believe. Highlights include:
• Day trip to Fushimi Inari/Nara – We arrived at Fushimari Inari at approximately 7:30am and made it to the top and back (30,000+ steps and 60+ flights of stairs according to smart watch). We then travelled to Nara where we fed the deer and visited Todaiji Temple. On our way back to the train station we were lucky enough to witness the famous “mocha pounding” at Nakatanidou.
• Day trip to Arashiyama – We arrived at the bamboo grove at approximately 6:00am and managed to get our photos/videos with minimal interruptions. We then trekked to the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple (favourite temple of the trip) and arrived just as it opened, we were the only visitors which was a pleasant change. We then headed back towards Arashiyama and visited the Iwatayama Monkey Park to complete yet another hike…
• Kinkakuji Temple – The temple was amazing but it was incredibly busy, no surprise.
We then left for Himeji to visit the castle, it was worth the detour. We then backtracked slightly to Osaka where we stayed for 5 nights, highlights include:
• Day trip to Universal Studios Japan – Self explanatory, the kids had a blast.
• Dotonbori – Had ramen at Ichi Ran more than I care to admit and amazing okonomiyaka at Mizuno. We also stumbled across a Turkish icecream shop, the gent that worked there tricked Harrison more times than we could count.
• Day trip to Kobe – We ate lunch at Steak Aoyama followed by a baseball game at Koshien Stadium between Hanshin Tigers and Chunichi Dragons, the atmosphere was amazing.
We then left for Hiroshima where we stayed for 2 nights, highlights include:
• Day trip to Itsukushima/Miyajima – We caught the ferry over to Miyajima to see the “floating” tori gate and went to the top of Mount Misen for a fantastic panoramic view of the surrounding area.
• Hiroshima Castle – We were lucky enough to see the castle as the sun was setting. It had an amazing golden glow.
• Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park – An eye opening experience that I can’t really put into words.
We then returned to Tokyo for an additional 2 nights to do some last minute shopping/site seeing prior to flying out. On the way back to Tokyo we decided to briefly stop in Nagoya to visit the castle, unfortunately it was raining quite heavily but the castle was worth seeing.
Japan Vlog Episode Eight - Saying goodbye... for now
And so, much like the setting of the sun, the day has inevitably come where our adventurers must leave this great country and return home. Although disheartened by the prospect of not being greeted each new day by a beautiful Japanese sunrise they will surely tell tales of this great journey in the months to come, until they can once again return home. To Japan.

Japan 2018 vlog pt 5
A new day in Tokyo. Today myself and Chaz go and explore Tokyo's tallest building, Tokyo Skytree. There was plenty of shops to explore but of course like any tourist you are there for the sights. We purchased tickets to go to the highest point. You could pay 2000 yen to go half way but that's for chumps, so we paid extra to go all the up and we was not disappointed. Going at night time was fantastic since you get to see that whole city lite up. Once back down to earth we went and found the Skytree's Pokemon Center and of course more money was spent. Overall another great day.

--------------------------------------------------------
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon (美少女戦士セーラームーン Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn)[a] is a Japanese tokusatsu television series based on the Sailor Moon manga created by Naoko Takeuchi. It is produced by Toei Company.
Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon was produced by Chubu-Nippon Broadcasting, airing on that station in Nagoya and on the Japan News Network nationwide from October 4, 2003 to September 25, 2004, and was a retelling of the series' first story arc, albeit with considerable plot divergences.
The opening theme, titled Kirari*Sailor Dream! (キラリ☆セーラードリーム! Kirari Sērā Dorīmu!), is performed by J-pop singer Nanami Yumihara under the name Sae (小枝).
The series lasted 49 episodes (called Acts), and also included two separate made-for-DVD specials, for a total of 51 acts.
Plot:
The Dark Kingdom, a great evil consisting of Queen Beryl, her generals, the Four Kings of Heaven, and an amorphous evil power named Queen Metaria attempt to steal energy so that Beryl can take over the world.
Standing in their way are the Sailor Guardians, five middle-school-aged girls: perky Usagi Tsukino, genius Ami Mizuno, paranormally gifted shrine maiden Rei Hino, tomboyish Makoto Kino, and J-pop idol Minako Aino, who are sworn to protect the Princess of the Moon and defeat the Dark Kingdom. Two beings that appear to be sentient stuffed toy cats, Luna and Artemis, serve as the girls' mentors. The Guardians also encounter Tuxedo Mask, a jewel thief in search of an immensely powerful, mystical Silver Crystal belonging to the Princess of the Moon.
While searching for the Princess of the Moon and the Silver Crystal, the initially disparate girls develop a strong bond of friendship, while Usagi also struggles with her feelings for the irksome and mysterious Mamoru Chiba. Later in the series, Metaria and Sailor Moon each get too powerful to be reined in, and the conflict shifts to attempting to postpone the inevitable destruction of the planet Earth.

Tokugawa Ieyasu
Tokugawa Ieyasu (徳川 家康, January 31, 1543 – June 1, 1616) was the founder and first shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate of Japan, which ruled from the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600 until the Meiji Restoration in 1868. Ieyasu seized power in 1600, received appointment as shogun in 1603, abdicated from office in 1605, but remained in power until his death in 1616. His given name is sometimes spelled Iyeyasu, according to the historical pronunciation of we. Ieyasu was posthumously enshrined at Nikkō Tōshō-gū with the name Tōshō Daigongen (東照大権現).
