American tourist killed in lion attack at South Africa park
An American tourist has been mauled to death by a lion at a popular wildlife park near Johannesburg, South Africa.
Despite park signs, staff believed that the lioness attacked the women through an open window of the car she was travelling in.
We hand them a slip of paper at the entrance just saying please keep your windows closed, we explain to them why, said Assistant Director of Operations Scott Simpson. But despite this it seems that the windows were still down. (...) The lion then sort …

Xenophobia affects South African football
In a week where xenophobic attacks in South Africa dominated the news, sports was not spared.

The Zambia-South Africa match will be rescheduled to be played during the October window for internationals.
The South African Football Association are trying to find altern…

It was also his first official overseas engagement. But the highlight for the young prince was attending a concert by the Spice Girls after having had a private meeting with them. After the meeting he stood with his father and the pop group for a photo session which also included South Africa's Deputy President Thabo Mbeki. Activists push back against lenient sentencing #JusticeForThembelihle
After almost 9 months of delays, the trial of Thabo Molefe, accused of raping and murdering Thembelihle Sokhela in September 2014, began on Monday 27 July 2015 in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court. Thembelihle was one of many black lesbian women in South Africa who have been victims of homophobic hate crimes.
ActionAid South Africa (AASA) partners— Rainbow Activist Alliance (RAA) and the Forum for the Empowerment of Women (FEW) went to Pretoria to monitor proceedings and demand justice for Thembelihle after undergoing criminal justice training at AASA offices.
On 30 July, the court found the accused guilty. He was sentenced to a mere 22 years in prison for murder and only 12 years for rape.
Activists from RAA and FEW say the criminal justice system has failed them yet again. They have called upon the Provincial Prosecuting Authority to appeal the judgement. The South African Criminal Procedures Act recommends the minimum of a life sentence for both rape and murder.
Vanessa Ludwig – activist and consultant for AASA and FEW, says there is a growing trend of courts handing down lenient sentences for heinous crimes. She said we need not look any further than the Oscar Pistorius case.
Pistorius who was due to be released last Friday after serving only 10 months for murdering Reeva Steenkamp. His release has since been delayed after South Africa's justice minister ordered a review of his pending parole, following a petition drawn up by local women’s rights groups.
“We feel that sentencing in this country is too low, particularly when it comes to crimes against women, and especially when there are clear judicial guidelines for the courts on minimum sentencing.” Ludwig said if they don’t receive a reply from the Prosecuting Authority by the end of August, they will mobilise once again to see that justice is served.

St Stithians overcome Paarl Gymnasium in double win to claim Coca-Cola T20 Schools Championship
Wiaan Mulder and Wandile Makwetu shared a 138-run, second-wicket partnership to set up an eight-run victory for St Stithians over Paarl Gymnasium in the final of the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge at Senwes Park Stadium in Potchefstroom on Sunday. They take the R110, 000 cash prize, claiming a second championship win for their school (the first was won in 2014 in Pretoria). After beating Paarl by 13 runs in the last round-robin match of the tournament this morning, St Stithians posted 152/3 at the end of their 20 overs after they were put in to bat first. Mulder played another captain’s innings, hitting 82 runs from 60 deliveries, with Makwetu adding 61 from 55 to set up a tough score for the opposition. The match-winning partnership began after Makwetu’s opening partner, Joshua Richards was dismissed without scoring by Gareth Wolmarans (2/29) in the third delivery of the innings. The 18 over long partnership included 13 fours and four sixes before Wolmarans struck a second time to get rid of Makwetu in the 19th with St Stithians on 142/2. Mulder lost his wicket with just one delivery left of the innings, falling victim to Pieter Borcherds (1/29), but his brother JP Mulder got the side two more runs to reach 152 in the end. The Paarl batting reply saw an early wicket fall when the Saints’ skipper removed Wolmarans for a duck in the first over. André Hanekom hit an impressive 75 runs from 57 balls to give his side hope of a victory, but no one else turned up with the bat to assist him. The second highest runs came from Wiaan van Niekerk, who managed 19 at a run a ball before his dismissal. The difference between the sides was the wickets that were taken at regular intervals to keep the asking rate high. Justin Watson, Curtis Campher and Wiaan Mulder took two wickets each to restrict Paarl to 144/8 in the end.

The GREEN LINE or United Nations Buffer Zone in Cyprus is a demilitarised zone, patrolled by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), that was established in 1974 following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, and de facto partitions the island into the area controlled by the Government of Cyprus (which is the de jure government for the entire island save for the British Sovereign Base Areas) in the South and that under the administration of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the North (occupied land) and is similar to the function the Berlin wall once had. As UNESCO ''Artist for Peace'' at one out of 4 check points/crossings in Nicosia the World Youth Choir was singing for understanding and peace between Greek and Turkish Cypriots.
The World Youth Choir session 2012 was held in Cyprus from August 7th to September 1st, 2012 thanks to the cooperation between the Foundation World Youth Choir and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation - Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, supported by the Ministry of culture and education - Cyprus presidency of the European Union (cultural events in 2012).

SUMMARY
=======
The Dutch East India Company (Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC) is one of the most influential and best expertly researched companies/corporations in history. As an exemplary historical company-state, the VOC had effectively transformed itself from a corporate entity into a state, an empire, or even a world in its own right. The VOC World (i.e. networks of people, places, things, activities, and events associated with the Dutch East India Company) has been the subject of a vast amount of literature that includes both fiction and non-fiction works. VOC World studies is an international multidisciplinary field focused on social, cultural, religious, scientific, technological, economic, financial, business, maritime, military, political, legal, diplomatic activities, institutional organization, and administration of the VOC and its colourful world. Some of the notable VOC historians/scholars include Sinnappah Arasaratnam, Leonard Blussé, Peter Borschberg, Charles Ralph Boxer, Jaap Bruijn, Femme Gaastra, Om Prakash, Günter Schilder, and Nigel Worden.
In terms of global business history, the lessons from the VOC's success and failure are critically important. With a permanent capital base, the VOC was the first permanently organized limited-liability joint-stock company at the dawn of modern capitalism. As an early pioneering model of the modern corporation, the VOC was the first corporation to be ever actually listed on a formal stock exchange. In the early 1600s the VOC became the world's first formally listed public company (or publicly listed company) by widely issuing bonds and shares of stock to the general public. In many respects, modern-day publicly listed multinational corporations (including Forbes Global 2000 companies) are all 'descendants' of the 17th-century VOC business model.
For almost 200 years of its existence (1602–1800), the Company played crucial roles in business, financial, socio-politico-economic, military-political, diplomatic, legal, ethnic, and exploratory maritime history of the world. In the early modern period, the VOC was the driving force behind the rise of corporate-led globalization, corporate power, corporate identity, corporate culture, corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, corporate finance, corporate capitalism, and finance capitalism. It was the VOC's institutional innovations and business practices that laid the foundations for the rise of giant global corporations to become a highly significant and formidable socio-politico-economic force of the modern world as we know it today ...
Suspense: Crime Without Passion / The Plan / Leading Citizen of Pratt County
A crime of passion, or crime passionnel, in popular usage, refers to a violent crime, especially murder, in which the perpetrator commits the act against someone because of sudden strong impulse such as sudden rage or heartbreak rather than as a premeditated crime. The act, as is suggested by the name (crime passionnel - from French language) is often associated with the history of France. However, such crimes have existed and continue to exist in most cultures.
A crime of passion refers to a criminal act in which the perpetrator commits a crime, especially murder or assault, against someone because of sudden strong impulse such as sudden rage or heartbreak rather than as a premeditated crime. A typical crime of passion might involve an aggressive pub-goer who assaults another guest following an argument or a husband who discovers his wife has made him a cuckold and proceeds to brutally batter or even kill his wife and the man with whom she was involved.
In the United States civil courts, a crime of passion is referred to as temporary insanity. This defense was first used by U.S. Congressman Daniel Sickles of New York in 1859 after he had killed his wife's lover, Philip Barton Key, but was most used during the 1940s and 1950s.
In some countries, notably France, crime passionnel (or crime of passion) was a valid defense during murder cases; during the 19th century, some cases could be a custodial sentence for two years for the murderer, while the spouse was dead; this ended in France as the Napoleonic code was updated in the 1970s so that a specific father's authority upon his whole family was over.
