Novosibirsk, Russia - Property Pinpoint Vlog Ep 9
I do not work in Russia but I have family here and I want show you a bit of what Novosibirsk, the 3rd largest city in Russia is like.
Once crusty and impersonal, Novosibirsk is now the capital of Siberia and has opened its doors to the world. With a slew of interesting museums and monuments, a relaxed big-city vibe, and a wealth of great accommodation at both the high and low ends make Novosibirsk a worthwhile Trans-Siberian pitstop.
The city grew up in the 1890s around the Ob River bridge built for the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the city is festooned with original examples of the wood-lace architecture that prevailed at the time before the Soviets took over and started chucking concrete everywhere. Named Novo-Nikolaevsk until 1925 for the last tsar, it grew rapidly into Russia's third largest city and a key industrial and transport centre exploiting coalfields to the east and mineral deposits in the Urals.

Siberia Drone Flight: Siberia is a vast Russian province encompassing most of Northern Asia, with terrain spanning tundra, coniferous forest and mountain ranges including the Ural, Altai and Verkhoyansk. Lake Baikal, in its south, is the worlds deepest lake, circled by a network of hiking paths called the Great Baikal Trail. The Trans-Siberian Railway passes Baikal on its route between Moscow and the Sea of Japan. Lake Baikals largest island, Olkhon, is a center of shamanism marked by Shaman Rock, an outcropping held sacred by indigenous islanders. The city of Irkutsk, the western gateway to Baikal, offers classical Russian architecture and Russian Orthodox churches. The Altai Mountains are river-rafting and mountaineering destinations with diverse wildlife and ecosystems. The Siberian Traps, a region of stairlike hills formed by ancient volcanoes, include Putorana Nature Reserve, which protects lakes and animals like reindeer and snow sheep. Novosibirsk, Siberias largest city, houses wood-lace buildings and the State Art Museum. // Irkutsk is a city on the Angara River in eastern Siberia, Russia. The river embankment is lined with hurches, including the Epiphany Cathedral (Sobor Bogoyavleniya), with gilded onion domes, and the Spasskaya Church, with its soaring bell tower. The restored neoclassical Moskovskie Vorota arch is also by the water. Near Kirov Square, the Irkutsk Regional Art Museum has ancient icons and more recent Russian artworks. // Ulan-Ude is a city in East Siberia, Russia. The main square Ploshchad Sovetov is home to the huge Lenin Head Monument. The City History Museum is set within the former house of a tea merchant. Nearby is the 18th-century Odigitrievsky Cathedral. To the north, Datsan Rinpoche Bagsha is a Buddhist temple with gilded stupas and sweeping city views. The outdoor Ethnographic Museum displays traditional Buryat wooden yurts. [wikipedia // Google]

Gunter for FeelRussia (full version english)
FeelRussia’s short films have become a part of a global project, that promotes Russia. These movies are diaries of tourists’ travels who have come to Russia for the first time. Off-screen travelers expand upon a marvelous country, meeting which has entirely changed their lives.
Film shooting was located in different nooks of Russia. Maksim Tomash from Stereotactic company was acting as a film director. Nina Saveleva from Krasniy Kvadrat company became a creative producer.
Films’ Central characters are a German urbanism professor Gunter and a free minded Chinese girl Li Fen. Gunter came to Russia to discover tourist attractions. He has prepared for his journey beforehand, made a detailed plan of the trip, he is extremely focused and attentive. Gunter enjoys urban realm and good hotels, amusedly attends museums of classic and modern art, visits monuments.
Gunter’s story looks like an adventure film with a cliffhanger plot. Though he had an ideally planned route – he changes his plans and the country uncloses for him from a very different side. He rushes on a motor-cycle across the field, dives in an ice cold lake, builds up a fire with locals, travels by rail throughout the country and performs a 210 meter bungee jump in the end.
The travel to Russia for Gunter is primarily a travel to the “truly”, “original” himself, a chance to hear own genuine voice and to feel the pulse of life, which probably shouldn’t have opened up for him in other circumstances.

The old part of Ulyanovsk along the Street of the Federation
One of the oldest streets in the commercial part of the city of Ulyanovsk - the Street of the Federation
It was named Loseva in 1834 and from January 1918 became the Street of the Federation after RSFSR or The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, the future union republic of the USSR (since 1922). It kept its name up to current days. Walking around the historical center of Ulyanovsk or former Simbirsk, you will have a chance to admire a lot of well-preserved monuments of wooden architecture, although the Street of the Federation is particularly famous for its wonderful examples of the stone architecture. Most of the buildings here belonged to families of local aristocracy before the Revolution.
Here during the WW2 one of the buildings was converted into an orphanage for children where our grandfather lived several years when he was 8 with other children like him whose parents died during the maelstrom of the war. Later on, he describes this building in his book Children of the war (read more about Viktor Shel and his story here:

Ekaterinburg - Екатеринбург | Плотинка Russia Россия | www.Ekaterinburg.TK
What is Interesting in the city?
There are a lot of places of interest in Ekaterinburg - it has a unique mixture of different architectural, historical, and cultural rarities, which may never be repeated. More than 60 monuments of history and culture are located in the city, and 43 of them are considered to be national monuments because of their special significance. That is why Ekaterinburg can claim the formal status as Russia's most historical city.
At present, Ekaterinburg is one of Russia's biggest industrial centres. It's enterprises produce industrial goods for heavy machinery and chemical plant construction, for transportation, and military purposes.
Ekaterinburg is not very old, but over the course of its 280-year history, it has proven itself to be a special and even unique city - not only by it's geographical location, but also by a role as one of the founders of Russian industry. The heart of Ekaterinburg is its dam, which permitted the initial development of the city's industrial base. It was first erected in 1723 and has been reconstructed twice since - now it is recognized as an industrial monument of the 18th century.
Unfortunately, very few buildings of the old factory area have been preserved. Those that do, house the Museum of History, Architecture, and Technology of the Urals, and the Natural Museum - both of which are located in the so-called Historical Park. The oldest building of Ekaterinburg, which dates from 1764 and recently reconstructed, is also situated here. At present this is the Fine Arts Museum. Ekaterinburg of the 18th century was a wooden city, however, the city's first buildings of stone construction also appeared here during this period. At most these were administrative buildings - for example, the Main Board of the mining factories, where the Urals Conservatory is located now.
In the late 18th and the early 19th centuries a new architectural style - classicism, influenced Ekaterinburg landscapes. The palace on Voznesenskaya Hill, with its luxurious park, is the most famous example of this style. Many churches and chapels made the city's panorama very beautiful and picturesque. In the beginning of the 20th century there were about 50 churches, of which only 6 still stand today.
There are quite a few buildings in the constructivist style within the city - typical of this are such examples as the Main Post Office, the Uralskij Rabochij (Ural Worker) printing house, the movie studio, the famous White Tower, the Dinamo recreational centre, etc.
The Soviet period brought new trends to Ekaterinburg's architecture - luxury and rationalism, which reflected the influence both of ideology and asceticism. New tendencies in the development of world architecture have also affected the city. Some of the most well known structures of this time include the Military Headquarters, the Ural Great Polytechnic University, the Railroad Administrative Building, and the Philharmonic Theatre.
The city's history is full of events -many expeditions to Siberia, Central Asia and the Far East passed through Ekaterinburg.
The city was visited by many Russian tsars and members of their families.
The first Russian president, Boris Yeltsin lived and worked here during the 1960s and 1970s.
Among the many monuments in Ekaterinburg are the monuments to Bolshevik Malyshev and The Black Tulip - Russian soldiers during the Afghan campaign named the aeroplanes which delivered the coffins of their dead comrades back to Russia The Black Tulips.
There are so many remarkable places in the 280-year-old Ekaterinburg, that all cannot possibly be described in this small web site. This brief information is intended to provoke the interest of Ekaterinburg's inhabitants and guests of the Urals to the history of our remarkable city.

Russia as a travel destination
For most westerners, Russia is associated with its European cities - Moscow and St.Petersburg. This is the heartland of Russia, and these great and ancient cities often become the focus for most guests. However, there is much more about Russia, a country that spans eleven time zones, ending less than 85 km from North America. Within this vast expanse lie the largest freshwater lake in the world, rivers and forests teeming with fish and wildlife, awe inspiring volcanoes, and towering mountains. Russia is the largest country of the Earth, with enormous tracts of land, its natural and cultural heritage waiting to be discovered.
Russia has a formidable pool of recreational resources, including natural landscapes of endless variety and inimitable beauty, monuments of history and cultural heritage, unique engineering structures, and unmatched cities, towns and smaller communities.
The most popular tourist attractions are the old Russian cities of Vladimir, Suzdal, Sergiev Posad, Pereyaslavl Zalessky, Rostov, Uglitch, Yaroslavl and Kostroma, the biggest gems of Russia’s Golden Ring. Also high on every tourist’s priority list are itineraries by boat from Moscow to St.Petersburg and the Valaam Island, a central point of religious piligrimage, or to Kizhi, the wonderland of old Russian wooden architecture, the Northern Caucasus and the Black Sea coast, to Mount Elbrus, the Ural mountains, and the Altai country, in different natural settings, from the Black Sea coast (like Gelenzhik and Anapa), the Baltic Sea (Sestroretsk, Komarovo, Zelenogorsk, Svetlogorsk, etc.) to the mountains of the Northern Caucasus (Teberda and Dombai), Ural (Kisegatch and Uveldy) and Altai (Chemal).
In the forest steppe and steppe areas, the invigorating nature is supplemented with refreshing koumiss, which is a favourite drink among the vacationers in Bashkortostan (Aksakovo, Yumatovo and Shafranovo).
There is no doubt that the most celebrated among Russian balneological resorts, a craze since the early 19th century to our day, of course, are the Caucasian Spas, a cluster of mineral springs at Yessentuki, Zheleznovodsk, Kislovodsk and Pyatigorsk, with Naltchik a short way off. The most famous among the local springs are Slaviansky, Smirnovsky, Lermontovsky, Batalinsky, the narzan springs of Kislovodsk, and mineral treats No.17 and No.4 at Yessentuki.
With the disintegration of the Soviet Union crime has been rising throughout Russia, however, it is safer here than in many American cities. Precautions include not flaunting valuables, or walking alone at night through city streets or parks.

Irkutsk
Irkutsk (Russian: Иркутск; IPA: [ɪrˈkutsk]) is a city and the administrative center of Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, and one of the largest cities in Siberia. Population:650.000
The city proper lies on the Angara River, a tributary of the Yenisei, 72 kilometers (45 mi) below its outflow from Lake Baikal and on the bank opposite the suburb of Glaskovsk. The river, 580-meter (1,900 ft) wide, is crossed by the Irkutsk Hydroelectric Dam and three other bridges downstream.
The Irkut River, from which the town takes its name, is a smaller river that joins the Angara directly opposite the city. The main portion of the city is separated from several landmarks—the monastery, the fort and the port, as well as its suburbs—by another tributary, the Ida (or Ushakovka) River. The two main parts of Irkutsk are customarily referred to as the left bank and the right bank, with respect to the flow of the Angara River.Irkutsk is situated in a landscape of rolling hills within the thick taiga that is typical in Eastern Siberia.
According to the regional plan, Irkutsk city will be combined with its neighboring industrial towns of Shelekhov and Angarsk to form a metropolitan area with a total population of over a million.
Irkutsk is the administrative center of the oblast and, within the framework of administrative divisions, it also serves as the administrative center of Irkutsky District, even though it is not a part of it. As an administrative division, it is incorporated separately as the City of Irkutsk an administrative unit with the status equal to that of the districts.[citation needed] As a municipal division, the City of Irkutsk is incorporated as Irkutsk Urban Okrug.
The coat of arms of Irkutsk features an old symbol of Dauria: a Siberian tiger with a sable in his mouth. When the coat of arms was devised in 1690, the animal was described as a tiger (babr, a bookish word of Persian derivation) with a sable in his mouth. This image had been used by the Yakutsk customs office from about 1642. It has its origin in a seal of the Siberia Khanate representing a sable and showcasing the fact that Siberia (or rather Yugra) was the main source of sable fur throughout the Middle Ages. (Actually, the English word sable is derived from the Russian sobol).
By the mid-19th century, the word babr had fallen out of common usage, but it was still recorded in the Armorial of the Russian Empire. Furthermore, the tigers became extinct in this part of Siberia. In the 1870s, a high-placed French heraldist with a limited command of Russian assumed that babr was a misspelling of bobr, the Russian word for beaver, and changed the wording accordingly. This modification engendered a long dispute between the local authorities, who were so confused by the revised description that they started to depict the babr as a fabulous animal, half-tiger and half-beaver.The Soviets abolished the image altogether, but it was restored following the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
