Russia Celebrates Pushkin Day! 220 Years From Birth Of The Biggest Russian Poet
The prominent poet, considered the founder of the modern Russian literary language, was born on June 6, 1799
Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin was born on June 6, 1799 in Moscow in the family of Sergey Lvovich Pushkin (1770-1848) and Nadezhda Osipovna Gannibal (1775-1836). His father served as an official in the Moscow Commissariat. Mother was the granddaughter of Abram Hannibal, an African orderly of Peter the Great.
Pushkin studied at the Tsarskoye Selo school 1811-1817, and during this time, he wrote a lot of his poetry. He was first published in 1814, at the age of 15. A year later, he would read his own poem Memories in Tsarskoe Selo, dedicated to the events of the Patriotic War of 1812 at a school exam. The poem was well received by Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin.

After graduation, Pushkin became involved in the literary life of St. Petersburg, took part in literary circles, theaters. During this time, he wrote Ruslan and Lyudmila, a poem that combined Russian fairy tale themes with European knight novels.
In 1820, when his poems took on political overtones, Pushkin narrowly escapes exile, although he angered Alexander I. His friends vouched for him, and he was sent to present day Ukraine, as clerk. During that time, he gets the idea that later will become perhaps his most famous work Eugene Onegin.
His first book of poems was published in 1826, and Boris Godunov became very popular. Yet a year later, Pushkin was investigated for his poem Andrei Chenier that thought to have showed support for the Decembrists uprising. Pushkin was followed by the police and forbidden to leave the country.
Several year later, he moved to the estate in the Nizhnigorodskiy Region, given to him by his father ahead of his marriage to Natalia Goncharova. The time Pushkin spent there has been viewed by the critics as the creative rise of the poet. It was there that he wrote Little Tragedies, finished Eugene Onegin, and wrote over 30 poems.
In December of 1830, Pushkin came to Moscow to marry Goncharova. The couple had four children: two daughters Maria and Natalia, and two sons Alexander and Gregory.
In the next 5 years, Pushkin wrote Queen of Spades, many of his fairy tales, and popular prose.
In 1837, Pushkin challenged George Dantes to a duel. The Frenchman openly courted his wife. During the duel, Pushkin was seriously wounded and died two days later. He was buried in his family ancestral tomb in the Holy Dormition Svyatogorsky monastery near Pskov.
Pushkin is considered the founder of the modern Russian literary language. He had a great influence on subsequent representatives of the golden age of Russian literature, such as Nikolai Gogol, Ivan Turgenev, Afanasy Fet, Fyodor Dostoevsky and others. Dozens of films, operas, ballets, plays and pieces of music were created based on his works.
Every June 6 Russia celebrates Pushkin's Day.

RUSSIA: PUSHKIN CELEBRATION: 200TH ANNIVERSARY
Russian/Nat
This weekend Russia celebrates the revival of one of its most revered national icons.
Festivities began on Saturday to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet Alexander Puskin.
Russia on Saturday began two days of celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the country's greatest poet Alexander Pushkin.
Pushkin - revered as Russia's equivalent of Shakespeare - wrote many of the first classics of Russian literature before he was killed in a duel in 1837.
UPSOUND (Russian)
Pushkin loved our country, loved Russia, believed in her, in the same way we should love her today.
SUPER CAPTION: Russian Prime minister Sergei Stepashin
The opening ceremony of the celebrations in Moscow was attended by premier Sergei Stepashin and Yuri Luzhkov, Moscow's mayor.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Allow me to declare open the ceremonies to mark the 200th anniversary of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
SUPER CAPTION: Mayor Yuri Luzhkov
Amongst the many performers and festivities, there was a special commemoration for the poet.
Mayor Luzhkov laid a wreath in honour of Puskin's contributions to Russian literature.
Alexander Pushkin was a controversial figure in his time.
In a story of mythic proportions, Alexander Pushkin challenged George D'Athes- Haekkern, a French royalist in the Russian service to a duel, to defend the honour of his wife.
D' Athes-Haekkern was alleged to be romantically interested in Pushkin's wife Natalia Goncharova.
Pushkin's life came to a sudden, and early end in 1837 when he died of his wounds in the duel.
The celebrations mark the beginning of a resurgence interest in the poet.

WOMAN and TIME: Natalia Pushkina
*For donate* Natalia Nikolayevna Pushkina (nee Goncharova) (1812-1863) was the wife of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.
Pushkin in Russia is called Our Everything. And this is not only the acuity. Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin is the great poet, writer and founder of the modern Russian language. Modern Russian language begins from Pushkin, from his poems, short stories, novels, historical and philological works.
Pushkin died in 1837 in the duel with Georges d'Anthès. He was only 37 years old. He was married to Natalie only 6 years old and they had four children. The youngest baby girl was only eight months old.
Natalia Nikolayevna was then 24 years old.
Pushkin's death is still perceived in Russia as a great national tragedy. The role of Natalia Nikolayevna in this drama is assessed in its own way.
She married at the age of 18 and was very young and inexperienced. Her beauty immediately became a legend.
Natalie attributed a love affair with Georges d'Anthès and Pushkin stood up for the honor of his wife and was killed in the duel.
Seven years after the death of her husband, Natalie married Petr Petrovich Lanskoy. She gave birth to three more daughters and lived the short, but quiet and, hopefully, a happy life.

A S Pushkin is widely considered to be the most magnificent poet in the Russian language. I made one mistake in this video. Pushkin was born in Moscow but he spent most of his life in St Petersburg. Some of his juvenilia was risque. His later work was more uplifting.

Puškin syntyi Moskovassa. Isänsä puolelta hän kuului Venäjän aateliin. Hänen äidinpuoleisen isoisänsä isä oli Etiopian seudulta vuonna 1701 Konstantinopoliin tuotu afrikkalainen orja Ibrahim Petrovitš Gannibal, jonka Venäjän Turkin-suurlähettiläs Savva Raguzinski adoptoi vuonna 1704. as born into Russian nobility in Moscow. His father, Sergey Lvovich Pushkin, belonged to Pushkin noble families. His maternal great-grandfather was African-born general Abram Petrovich Gannibal. He published his first poem at the age of 15, and was widely recognized by the literary establishment by the time of his graduation from the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum. Upon graduation from the Lycee, Pushkin recited his controversial poem Ode to Liberty, one of several that led to his being exiled by Tsar Alexander the First. While under the strict surveillance of the Tsar's political police and unable to publish, Pushkin wrote his most famous play, the drama Boris Godunov. His novel in verse, Eugene Onegin, was serialized between 1825 and 1832. Pushkin was fatally wounded in a duel with his brother-in-law, Georges-Charles de Heeckeren d'Anthès, also known as Dantes-Gekkern, a French officer serving with the Chevalier Guard Regiment, who attempted to seduce the poet's wife, Natalia Pushkina. gilt als russischer Nationaldichter und Begründer der modernen russischen Literatur. Alexander Puschkin wurde am 26. Mai 1799 in Moskau geboren. ärineb Puškinite tituleerimata aadlisuguvõsast, mis genealoogilise legendi järgi pärineb ausast mehest Ratšast (мужу честну Ратше). OROMO MUSIC - Pushkin's day in Africa, Alexander Pushkin is Ours !!!
Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), the Black father of Russian literature.
Yes… that’s right! Alexander Pushkin, the father of modern Russian literature, was in reality Black. His grandfather was actually an African slave, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, who later became a general to “Peter the Great”. The regional origin of Gannibal is often contested as it is often said that he was born in 1696 in the village of “Lagon” in modern-day Eritrea (a statue of Pushkin was erected in Asmara in 2009), while others claim that he was from the Logone-Birni area in Cameroon (possibly from the Kotoko kingdom or the Kanem-Bornu Empire). Interestingly enough, Alexander himself was very proud of his African ancestry.
Just to give you a time frame, Pushkin lived from 1799 to 1837 in Russia, and even wrote a book about his grandfather entitled “Peter the Great’s Negro,” also known as “Blackamoor of Peter the Great.” He is considered to be the greatest Russian poet and pioneered the use of vernacular speech in his poems, plays, mixing both drama and romance. Alexander Pushkin introduced Russia to all the European literary genres. He brought natural speech and foreign influences to create modern poetic Russian. Even though he lived a short life, he left examples of nearly every literary genre of his day: lyric poetry, narrative poetry, the novel, the short story, the drama, the critical essay, and even the personal letter. He lived a life entirely based on his favorite quote: “Live by the pen, die by the sword.” He lived a very provocative life, and was a real playboy. He died in a duel.
Monuments have been erected in Russia, in St Petersburg, Moscow, and schools do carry his name. PBS did a piece on Frontline, entitled Pushkin Genealogy. It is said that Leo Tolstoy‘s book’s character Anna Karenina is based on Pushkin’s daughter (Maria Gartung), whom Tolstoy described as being extremely beautiful and intelligent. Check out some of his books on Amazon: Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades, Boris Godunov, and others… Check out Wikipedia to learn more about the father of modern Russian literature.
