The cool breeze off the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea on the coast, make Morocco a great surf country during most months of the year.
Thanks to its consistent waves, Morocco is widely regarded as a year-round surfing destination. However, it is during autumn and winter that the country’s breaks truly come to life.
The region south of the Atlas Mountains, between Essaouira and Agadir, is home to the best surf spots in the country.
Taghazout
Taghazout and its neighboring town of Tamraght are dotted with surf shops, cafes, and restaurants serving finger-licking’ Moroccan cuisine.
Morocco’s most notorious surf spot and the most popular in the Taghazout area, Anchor Point, promises the ride of your life.
This is a great wave for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Tamraght
Located near the village of Aourir, this surf spot got its name from the banana plantations overlooking the bay. Here, Banana Point is a long right hander that is excellent for all levels and that hardly ever gets crowded.
Banana Point is a great wave for beginners. If you just started surfing you will learn a lot at Banana Point.
Imsouane
Just outside the sleepy fishing village of Imsouane, The Bay is a long right-hander and one of the longest wave in Africa. A heaven for beginner surfers and longboarders, this break fires up between August and March.
The Bay is a perfect spot for beginners and also for those surfers who trying to catch their first green wave.

A Tour of Taghazout, Morocco: Moroccan Surfer Town
A Ridiculous Moroccan Session
Written by Mark Egor Harris. Filmed & edited by Nick Lloyd.
My first ever surf trip abroad was to a secret spot in Morocco when I was 12 years old. I was looked after by Quiksilver and they invited me to a training camp to one of the best waves and at the time best-kept secrets in surfing. An incredible right-hand freight train point break which breaks over sand covered rocks and needs a really big swell in the Atlantic to start pumping perfect tubes down the point.
That first trip was a huge eye-opener for a 12-year-old grommet from Fistral beach and also slightly daunting to surf solid heavy grinding tubes for the first time. I remember watching the best surfers in the world including Hawaiian legend Jeff Hakman, Tom Carroll and the best of Europe charging these heavy tubes and I was on the shoulder of the waves ….. jaw side open taking it all in but without the skill, experience or courage to really surf the waves.
So 24 Years on in March 2017 the moons aligned, a huge winter swell was in the Atlantic and I was back to visit this incredible wave in Morocco with two very good friends. Unfortunately, our boards and wetsuits did not make it on the plane to Morocco with us and we luckily had to borrow equipment from a surf camp. The next day was perfect, big grinding tubes and with the odds against us, we paddled on our borrowed, unfamiliar equipment try and score a dream wave. After figuring out the line-up and the new equipment I suddenly found myself in the perfect spot for a large set wave …… my heart was pounding. I took off and the borrowed 6’6 board felt nice under my feet and I started to weave through one of the longest most perfect tubes of my life which fell amazing! I rode a wave exactly like how I saw my heroes riding them 24 years before at the Quiksilver training camp.
One ridiculous Moroccan drainer!
Then in mid-February this year another huge Atlantic swell roared in sending a great looking swell down to Morocco. I booked a last minute flight to meet the swell which lasted four days at the best wave in Morocco. This time my boards arrived with me on the plane and I had new designs to test out on the long perfect walls. It was a really nice week long surf trip to Africa!

Moroccan seaside village is a paradise for surfers
(18 Jan 2020) LEAD IN:
An old fishing village in Morocco has become a popular destination for surfers.
Good weather and sea conditions have helped Taghazout attract beginners and experts to ride the waves.
STORY-LINE:
Surf's up in Taghazout.
While the winter weather in Europe has turned the seas there icy cold, the year-round Moroccan sunshine makes this seaside village a water sports paradise.
And as it's January, the beaches are not as crowded as they get during the summer months.
Taghazout has become the surf capital of Morocco.
In the past, surfing was practised only by tourists and only a few Moroccans were doing it, says Mehdi Lamhil, a Moroccan surfer.
With time, more and more tourists came to Taghazout to surf because this sport is very popular here. We also have more and more clubs and surfing associations helping local kids with equipment.
Surfers have been coming here since the 1960s - but back then it attracted wealthy foreigners who could afford the expensive equipment.
These days though, it's one of the cheapest surf destinations in the world, full of backpackers travelling on limited budgets as well as locals who have embraced the sport.
Every street of the bustling village boasts shops that sell or rent equipment.
The sport has become so important to Taghazout's economy that some locals have changed their businesses to cater to the demand.
This shop was the first cafe and restaurant in Taghazout. It was run by my grandfather, says surf shop manager Mohamed Lamrach.
Today, it is a shop fully devoted to surfing because Taghazout is well known for surfing.
It's not just the weather that draws surfers to this stretch of coast.
The conditions are suitable for every level.
There are sheltered spots were beginners can build their confidence in the water. But as winter descends, there are also areas where more advanced surfers can ride bigger waves.
Surf instructor Amine Amila sees Taghazout as the ideal location to build up surfing skills.
Thanks to the temperature we have here because we have the sun all year long, foreigners, mainly those from Scandinavian countries and northern Europe where it is cold, do come here to surf and to make the most of the waves, he says.
They are not frightening waves. Yes, we have some spots for professionals but we also have some others for beginners and intermediates. That allows them to improve and progress gradually.
European tourists are the typical clientele.
They are escaping the winter back home for a bit of North African warmth,
I am a beginner but I come to Morocco very often, says French tourist Ludovic Maillet.
You can come here all the time, from January to December. Good weather and waves are always guaranteed.
Taghazout is an old fishing village, 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) north of Agadir.
