The Beauty of the Mosque Madrassa of Sultan Hassan in Cairo
I was excited about visiting the Mosque of Sultan Hassan, which I have seen many times from outside but never ventured within. It was a school or madrasa, but for the first time in Cairo, the madrasa had also the status of a congregational mosque for Friday sermons. There are many interesting stories about this mosque, which is considered to be Cairo's finest example of early Mamluk architecture. In fact, many guidebooks refer to it as the finest ancient mosque in Cairo and have been praised as one of the major monuments of the Islamic world. This monument is best seen in the morning when the sun lights up the mausoleum and the western iiwan.

The Madrasa of Sultan Hassan stands proud as a witness to the glamour of Mamluk architecture in Cairo , in Muslim Egypt, and , even in the Islamic world .
This book targets future generations who are to bear the responsibility of this huge inheritance, in terms of its preservation, its use of learning lessons, evolution through it, and its protection from destructive actions of time and man . This is to be accomplished by understanding the present and departing from the past , with all its cultural heritage and history. We are to take from the Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, its ingenious architectural patterns and , creative energies without falling in a regression blind copying practice , as it may lead to the loss of our deep cultural roots , and at the same time the alienation from our contemporary setting

Massive yet elegant, this grand structure is regarded as the finest piece of early Mamluk architecture in Cairo. It was built between 1356 and 1363 by Sultan Hassan, a grandson of Sultan Qalaun; he took the throne at the age of 13, was deposed and reinstated no less than three times, then assassinated shortly before the mosque was completed. Beyond the striking recessed entrance, a dark passage leads into a peaceful square courtyard surrounded by four soaring iwans (vaulted halls).
The iwans were dedicated to teaching the four main schools of Sunni Islam. At the rear of the eastern iwan, an especially beautiful mihrab (niche in mosque indicating direction of Mecca) is flanked by stolen Crusader columns. To the right, a bronze door leads to the sultan’s mausoleum. During construction one of the minarets collapsed and killed some 300 onlookers sparking superstitious rumours that Sultan Hassan's rule was at an end. They weren't wrong. Just over a month later, he was murdered by his army commander.

The Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan is a massive Mamluk era mosque and madrassa located near the Citadel in Cairo. Its construction began 757 AH/1356 CE with work ending three years later without even a single day of idleness.[1] At the time of construction the mosque was considered remarkable for its fantastic size and innovative architectural components. Commissioned by a sultan of a short and relatively unimpressive profile, al-Maqrizi noted that within the mosque were several wonders of construction.[1] The mosque was, for example, designed to include schools for all four of the Sunni schools of thought: Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanafi and Hanbali.

Its construction began in 1356 AC, and was considered remarkable at that time for its giant size and innovative architect components. Commissioned by El Nasser Sultan Hassan from the mamlouk dynasty who had a short and unimpressive profile, the mosque shows several wonders of construction and was designed mainly for all four of the Sunni schools, or the Islamic schools at that time, The Shafei, The Hambali, The Hanefi, and The Maleki.
