One of Big Four's ice caves, ca. 2005
Big Four Mountain is a mountain in the Cascade Range of Washington, located 21 miles (34 km) east of Granite Falls. The mountain is about 6,180 ft (1,880 m) high. At the bottom of its steep, 4,200 ft (1,300 m) high north face, debris piles form from avalanches and are able to remain there year round because of the continuous shade provided by the mountain. At an elevation between 2,450 ft (750 m) and 1,950 ft (590 m), this ice forms the lowest-elevation glacier in the lower 49 states.[1] During the summer, snow-melt streams flow beneath the debris piles and cause caves to be formed in the ice.
The trail
The Big Four Ice Caves Trail, a designated National Recreation Trail,[1] (#723) is one of the most popular hikes in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest attracting over 50,000 visitors per year. Frequently exceeding several hundred hikers per day, the trailhead's two separate parking areas are often filled beyond capacity occasionally forcing hikers to park along neighboring Mountain Loop Road.
A severe autumn storm in November 2006 caused flooding of the South Fork Stillaguamish River destroying a major footbridge to the Big Four Ice Caves. Estimated repair costs to replace the damaged span were approximately $425,000, and repairs were completed in June 2009.[2] While the trail is open to the public, the snowfield itself was closed temporarily[3] due to cave-ins and slides which have killed four hikers in incidents in 1998, 2010, and in 2015.

Went for a great father's day daytrip out toward Mt Loop Highway that started with a picnic by the Big 4 Ice Caves and ended with some naked playing in the river with my 4 year old son while mom napped on a tapestry by the waterfall. Great day to celebrate fatherhood. y website is at
Kelcema lake
Kelcema lake is a short hike and a small lake that is big on scenery. The morning drive east of Granite Falls on the Mountain Loop Highway past Silverton was pleasantly interrupted by a camera shy doe and her two fawns. Once on trail the flora included fritillaria (chocolate lily), lichen, grandfather moss, heather, penstemon, and orchids (coral root). Weathered snags amid the old cedars, rock, and waterfalls invite you to meditate in the reflections of a clear alpine lake. They are all nestled under the gaze of bald mountain. Views of Devils peak and sounds of small falls that peek-a-boo when you drive off beckon to to stay a little longer when driving the road back. If this was quick excursion, you'll say to yourself, I should have planned to stay longer.

Hiking Granite Mountain - Washington State 2017
On this day (May 2017), I hiked and explored Granite Mountain located in Snoqualmie Region, Washington State along the I-90. The views from the summit are astonishing, however, it comes at a price with the mountain nearly 1000 feet gain per mile. The hike is about 8.6 miles round trip and its highest point is 5,629 feet (1,716 meters). This is an extremely tough hike but worth the views if anyone makes it to the top of the summit. Also, dogs are allowed on the hike, however, must be kept on a leash.

Overland Trip on Washington's Naches Wagon Trail - Off Road Adventure
on this overland adventure travel a couple of Toyota FJ Cruiser, Land Rover Defender 90 and Toyota Land Cruiser BJ60 go off roading through the naches pass to eastern Washington... We all rushed in to support Young Turk's physics experiment fail involving a Hi-Lift jack, his rear window and about six tons of force...want more about this overland adventure??!! See:
The D90 's short wheel makes exploring this trail easy. The Land Cruisers and FJ Cruiser have a little more trouble on the historic Naches Wagon Trail. But that is part of off road travel. Camping on the Washington back roads in the heart of the Naches area wilderness defines outdoor recreation.

Basin countries United States
Surface area 4.5 sq mi (12 km2)
Lake Tapps is a reservoir in Pierce County, Washington. It was created in 1911 by Puget Sound Energy and operated for hydroelectric power until it ceased power production in 2004. In December 2009 PSE sold the reservoir to the Cascade Water Alliance, a municipal corporation whose members are five King County cities (Bellevue, Issaquah, Kirkland, Redmond, and Tukwila) and two water and sewer districts (Sammamish Plateau Water and Sewer District, and the Skyway Water and Sewer District). Cascade provides drinking water to more than 350,000 residents and more than 20,000 businesses. It plans to eventually use Lake Tapps as a municipal water supply source for customers of its members.
Cascade has signed an agreement with the Lake Tapps homeowners that guarantees full recreational reservoir levels throughout the summer. It has also signed an agreement with the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe and the Puyallup Tribe of Indians to ensure instream flows for fish. Cascade worked with the four cities that surround the reservoir, Auburn, Bonney Lake, Buckley and Sumner, to ensure their future water needs will be met for about 50 years. Cascade is the operator of Lake Tapps. Key elements of these agreements were incorporated into state water rights issued to Cascade in 2010.
Lake Tapps is about 4.5 square miles (12 km2) in surface area and has about 45 miles (72 km) of shoreline. The local terrain is such that the shape of the shoreline is very complex, with many inlets, peninsulas, and islands. Before the reservoir was created there were several smaller lakes, including one called Lake Tapps. The reservoir is held in place by a series of dikes. The reservoir is also known to hold many fish including carp, smallmouth bass, perch, and tiger musky.
A diversion dam on the White River, near Buckley, routes water into a flume which empties into the east side of Lake Tapps. On the west side of the reservoir, water had originally been routed to the Dieringer Powerhouse to generate hydroelectricity, after which the water was returned to the White River, about 20 miles (32 km) downstream from the diversion dam. Although there is no longer power generation, the water is still diverted and returned to the river through the former hydropower infrastructure.
The level of the reservoir is lowered from about October to April to allow important upkeep and maintenance to be done, as well as an occasional major capital project. The winter lowering of the reservoir levels also ensures the safety of dikes from wind, waves and storms.
At the diversion structure on the White River the US Army Corps of Engineers is undertaking a project to replace the 100 plus year old barrier and 70 plus year old fish trap and haul facility. this project will allow the Corps to move endangered salmon and bull trout, as well as other species, above its Mud Mountain Dam facility. The project began in mid-2018 and is expected to be completed in 2023.
Lake Tapps is often considered a city or census-designated place in its own right, and it does have its own zip code -- 98391. However, the majority of the area surrounding the reservoir is in unincorporated Pierce County, Washington; the rest is part of the city of Bonney Lake. At the northern edge of Lake Tapps is Auburn.[1]

Let's Hike - Mt. Pilchuck, WA USA - 26 July 2014, Partly Cloudy
On 26 July 2014 my Dad and I hiked Mt. Pilchuck near Mountain Loop Highway in the North Cascades. Unlike our previous visit to this mountain a year ago, this time we were lucky enough to have an interesting view at the top thanks to forgiving partly cloudy weather. Mt. Pilchuck is one of my favorite mountains to hike due to the beautiful vistas and especially interesting variation of the trail, as well as the respectably challenging climb. Given all this trail has to offer and its close proximity to several cities and towns, this hike is one of the most popular in the Puget Sound area.
