Thessaloniki (Thermaikos) bay half hour sea cruises
Thessaloniki (Thermaikos) bay half hour sea cruises
Capture the city's spirit with one boat cruise! A visit in Thessaloniki, northern Greece's lively capital of 1,2 million people, can't be considered complete without a visit in its lively seafront. Even better a half hour cruise along Thermaikos gulf, gives to the visitors the chance to have a full view of the city, its neighbouring municipalities, its forest, its harbour etc. There are 4-5 different ships doing half hour cruises, all of them departing throughout the day (in summer season) in front of the White Tower, the city's most famous landmark. So go there, gaze at the different ships and decide in which one you wish to embark. In most of them you don't have to pay a ticket, but there is a minimum consumption of 4-5 euros, in the form of coffee, drinks etc. One thing is for sure: you will have a lot of fun, you will take very nice pictures or videos of the city and its seafront, while the sea breeze and the relaxed atmosphere of the ship will stay for many years to come in your memory!
In case you are interested for a similarly interesting accommodation in the city outskirts, have a look at our spacious villa, in Agios Antonios village, 30km east of Thessaloniki, just 20km from Halkidiki's first beaches:

Pull the plug - DEATH (live cover by Consumed Spirit, 8ball Club, Thessaloniki, Greece)
At 12/12/2012, at 8ball Club, Thessaloniki, Greece, took place The Live Tribute Fest to Death and Chuck Schuldiner, in memory of dearest Chuck (I know that he actually died at the 13th of December, but the Tribute could only be scheduled to take place at the 12th).
So I participated as a session guitarist with Consumed Spirit, a death metal band formed by some of my friends. We performed for a little more than an hour, like most of the other bands participating in the Tribute, and had absolutely the best time - one cannot be playing Death songs without having chills!
We mainly covered the albums Scream Blood Gore (1987) and Leprosy (1988), but also played a few songs from Spiritual Healing (1990). In the video above you can see us performing Pull the plug from Leprosy. The video is quite of a poor quality, but it's the best that could be done... I hope you enjoy it (or not).
Consumed Spirit:
Stratos - lead & rythm guitars
Dimos K. - lead & rythm guitars
Theo - vocals
George D. - bass
George T. - drums
During the rehearsals for the show and the show itself I used, for the first time, the D standard tuning for my Ibanez. Interesting.
I also must confess that due to my ass-pounding schedule I hadn't had the time to learn the solo, so I improvised a bit.
Lyrics:
Memories is all that's left behind, as I lay and wait to die.
Little do they know that I hear their choice of life.
End it now, it is the only way.
Too cruel, that is what they say.
Release me from this lonely world...
There is no hope - why don't you...
... pull the plug.
Let me pass away.
Pull the plug.
Don't want to live this way.
Once I had full control of my life, I now behold a machine decides my fate.
End it now, it's all too late.
What has now been days, it seems like years... to stay like this is what I fear.
Life ends so fast, so take your chance and make it last.
End it now, it is the only way.
Too cruel, that is what they say.
Release me from this lonely world...
There is no hope - why don't you...
... pull the plug.
Let me pass away.
Pull the plug.
Don't want to live this way.

Thessaloniki Gastronomy
Nowhere else in Greece can one find so many different flavours combined on the same table. No one can deny that the city has been influenced by its successive conquerors and the arrival of refugees of various origins. Thessaloniki is in the fortunate position of enjoying a rich marine environment from the shores of Thermaikos Gulf to Mt. Athos coastline and the Eastern Aegean islands. Fish and seafood are plentiful and accompanied by the creations of the vineyards of Northern Greece, including both wines and spirits.
The Greeks who call Mount Olympus their spiritual home
(11 Jul 2017) LEADIN:
Inspired by the ancient gods, several hundred people are making an annual pilgrimage to Mount Olympus in Greece.
They're on a journey guided by Greek mythology.
STORYLINE:
Silver haired and softly spoken, George Klonis worked as a bus driver into his sixties, but found his life's purpose at the foot of Mount Olympus.
Now, with his arms outstretched and toes touching cold spring water, he's offering his devotion to Greece's ancient god.
Behind him, about 50 men and women stand in silence with their eyes closed.
Several hundred devotees of ancient religion and traditions make this annual trip to Mount Olympus every July.
Home of the gods of ancient Greece, Olympus is the country's highest peak at just under 3,000 metres (9,600 feet).
The annual pilgrimage started back in 1996 and draws a diverse following that includes history enthusiasts, marathon runners, fantasy gamers, nationalists, or young people seeking a taste of counterculture.
Events include blessing ceremonies for civil weddings or the adoption of an ancient nickname, craft and theatre workshops, and discussions on aspects of ancient life ranging from cooking to sexuality.
For Klonis, who comes from the nearby city of Thessaloniki, being close to nature was a major reason for his participation.
I speak to you as a person who lived most of his life in a city, deprived and cut off from the magic and beauty of nature, he says.
I would urge (anyone interested) to take in this magical scene, this sense of calm, this sacred gift to man, and the beauty. And if he would wish to follow the footsteps of the ancients - what we are honouring here today - that would be his choice.
Ancient Greece's epic myths of creation and celestial power are almost dreamlike supernatural tales of heroism, violence, lust, jealousy, monsters and magic.
The gods made their stronghold at Mount Olympus, led by Zeus who fired lightning bolts in anger down the mountain.
The names of ancient gods have inspired everything from the planets in our solar system to U.S. sportswear maker Nike, the goddess of victory.
While Greece has been overwhelmingly Orthodox Christian for centuries, reminders of the more distant past are everywhere.
Mythology is taught from an early age in elementary schools, it's in street names, on coins and the ancient temples in Greek cities.
After centuries of Ottoman rule ended nearly 200 years ago, ancient Greek history helped the emerging modern country rebuild a national identity.
Events at the annual pilgrimage to Olympus begin at the ancient archaeological site of Dion, where a small group runners head to the nearby mountain town of Litohoro.
Many athletes dress as ancient warriors, wearing costumes once on sale as novelty items to tourists, now held together with staples and duct tape.
Retired telecoms worker Dimitrios Kalantzis, brought his bright blue tunic and mock torso armour and carries a round shield.
We came for this event, for the runners, that starts here (Dion) and finishes 10.5 kilometres away in Litohoro, he says.
They are waiting there for the procession in the village - that's a beautiful event. The runners also receive an award. I've been taking part here for 15 years and I really enjoy it because it's something that is truly Greek.
In Litohoro, the runners are greeted by several hundred more devotees who hold a sombre torch-lit procession around the town, in step to slow-beating drums and tunes played on a recorder.
Excited children run around them during the hour-long rally, while older residents look on, some with discreet amusement.
What I'd like to stress is that we are not 'anti' anything. We respect everyone's beliefs, says organiser Giorgos Agrodios.

TTAG Shred Diaries EP7 Olympus
Our next and final mission was also going to be the most challenging yet. Mt Olympus. Home of the 12 Gods who lived in the deep gorges of the mountain. We left Thessaloniki in high spirits and drove Southwest to the village of Litochoro to fuel up. That’s where we got our first good look at the beast. Carrying almost 35 kilos on my back made this my personal Goliath, and as many times as I thought about giving up and turning back, it was through pure stubbornness that I kept going.
We were greeted by Mike and Thodoris at Kakalos Refuge with plenty of water and hot tea. For me this was a huge achievement already. We had now officially travelled the country, in a big zig zag, and ended up on top of the world, looking down on the adventures behind us.
We knew Zeus was probably watching us the whole way up so we dropped our stuff off and started praying the best way we knew how. Once we had appeased the gods it was time for a little reconnaissance mission. That’s when I noticed that the refuge looked a lot like a quarter pipe. We heard there was some bad weather rolling in so we hatched a plan. We were going to build the highest snowpark in the country. We got the shovels out and spent the next couple of days digging and shaping. Team B, headed by Gerasimo finally made their way up to the refuge to join in on the action.
The next day the weather cleared up and everyone picked their hit. Wether it was hiking lines or shredding the little park, everyone got their fix of riding with the gods.
Closing my journey with this chapter definitely put everything into perspective. This country is ripe for exploring and it was obvious there were a whole bunch of guys and girls who were ready to discover more about their own back yard.

VENGEANCE Pub Life - Live! Intro + Wrathchild with Asteriadis & Sotiris Gogos THESSALONIKI GREECE
Giorgos Trapezanidis - Drums & Vocals
Fotis ??? - Bass
Dimitris 'Jimmy' Asteriadis - Guitars
Sotiris Gogos - Guitars
A very early LIVE bootleg recording of Vengeance as they formely just changed their name over from SINNER, captured live by a fan at a Greek dog-house in the very early 1980's called PUB LIFE. Guitarists were SOTIRIS GOGOS & DIMITRIS ASTERIADIS whom later went on to both become recognized guitarists amongst the Greek musical circuits. Drummer & vocalist was George Trapezanidis whom gave many a head start in their musical careers, and Bass player was someone by the name of FOTIS (surname unknown) whom was a close friend and associate of Sotiris Gogos. The audio is very muddy, as one would expect due to the nature of equipment used to record bootlegs back in the early 1980's. The INTRO was titled VENGEANCE IS MINE (WRITTEN BY THE BAND) prior to blasting into Maiden's classic head turner WRATHCHILD. Somewhere in between you can hear Asteriadis's voice saying, 'you're recording over it' as the record button was pressed accidently over it upon listening to the cassette (lol). This is a piece of Greek HEAVY METAL History my dear metal friends, and again I will reiterate that those were the days my friends. If you weren't there, you'll never understand the magic. Thanks to everyone that supported the band in those days, you know who you are. Hope you enjoy, and Keep the Metal Spirit alive!!! - Vengeance member
