CWG Pan Northern Torch Relay Dawson City, Yukon - January 27, 2007 (Part 1)
The Yukon Torch visits Dawson City, Yukon on January 27, 2007 as part of the Canada Winter Games Pan Northern Torch Relay. The torch was carved by Shane Wilson from caribou antler. The Yukon Torch broke during the skijoring portion of this relay and was repaired later in the relay, when the broken piece was recovered, using transparent duct tape. (Part 1)

Mt. Steele Landslide Debris, Yukon, Canada
Low level helicopter survey, September 30, 2009, of the 2 year old debris field from the 2007 landslide on the Steele Glacier.
On July 24, 2007, a catastrophic rock and ice avalanche occurred on the north face of Mount Steele (16,644') in Kluane National Park, Yukon Territory. The landslide traveled a horizontal distance of 5.76 km, with a maximum vertical descent of 2160 m. Between 27.5 and 80 million cubic metres of debris were deposited onto Steele Glacier, at the foot of Mt. Steele. This was one of the largest rock avalanches documented in the St. Elias Mountains in the past century and is one of only 16 rock avalanches known to have occurred from rock slopes adjacent to glaciers in the Canadian Cordillera since 1947. The landslide generated a magnitude 5.2 seismic event that was detected around the world and modelling suggests that the landslide reached velocities of up to 500 km/hr. Alta Expedition Wild Yukon Alaskan Gold Rush Part 1
Day Program Whitehorse- Whitehorse (YXY - YXY)
1 Whitehorse : Day of arrival. Welcome and transfer to the hotel by the guide. For pax arriving in the afternoon- First contact with Whitehorse, Tour meeting at breakfast next day at hotel restaurant for 7H30.
2 Breakfast at 7H30. Group meeting. Morning visit of Whitehorse. Go to see salmon pass and Miles Canyon, SS Klondike Steamboat. Also some suggestions to visit : Beringia center, Glaciation museum ($6CAD), Mc Bride museum - Yukon history ($6CAD). Afternoon, drive to Skagway ( 180km- 2H30) and pass the USA border just beside of the famous Klondike trail- Chilkoot pass. Setup camping in Skagway.
3 Upper Deway Lake. Hike to Upper deway Lake, view point at the top on Taiya iNlet (Fjord), the inside passage and skagway city. Hike 10 km roundtrip, elevation gain 930m.
4 Lost lake trail. Pass beside the gold rush cemetery (gold seeker lost their lives in an avalanche 1898). Hike 3-4 hours, elevation gain 535m. End of afternoon, ferry for Haines, Setup camping at Haines. Pay shower $2.
5 Mount Ripinski by the 7 Mile Saddle. Over the tree line, we walk on a ridge of Takshanuk Mountains. 7-9 hours, elevation gain 1400m
6 Mount Riley best viewpoint over Chilkat Peninsula. At the top... view 360 view on Hanies-Fjord- Chilkoot. 4-5 hours, 13 km roundtrip, elevation gain 720m.
7 Drive on the morning to Haines Junction ( 230km-3 hours). Stop at the Chilkat River preserve of Bald Eagles (white head eagle, USA symbol). We re-enter in Canada to go to Kluane National Park. Afternoon hike at Auriol Trail in Kluane NP. 4-6 hours, 15 km roundtrip, 410m elevation gain. Pass through Boreal Forest to Alpine meadows with great view on mount Quill and Martha Black. Setup camp at Haines Junction. Pay Shower $.
8 King's Throne (1800m). Trailhead at lake Katheleen. Hike along the black glacier on the ridge to the top. (7-8h / up and down 1230m). Return to campsite.
9 Mount Decoeli summit. 8hours - 18 km round trip, elevation gain 1340m. Fabulous hike aside of the Black glacier , to a ridge and a pass to the summit. Wonderful view on Mount Logan (highest summit in Canada). Drive to Kluane lake (1hour-85km), setup camp for 3 nights
10 Many hikes possible in the aera for the next 2 days , depend on weather , we will hike to the top of Sheep Mountain (1950m) : 7-8 hours- 12 km, elevation gain 1155m. View on Blue/Turquoise Kluane lake, Kaskawulch and Kluane range glacier. Portion of the park could be close due to Grizzlys activities.

12 Top of the world highway. Day of driving (12 hours). Crossing the US border, entering in Alaska . Driving accross Alaskans highlands to Dawson City. Stop at Chicken, gold seeker village, and crossing Canadian Border to Dawson City : Klondike capital !
13 Dawson city and gold rush visit. River drag, gold panning, Midnight dome.
14 Drive to North Fork Pass, in the middle of the Ogilvie Mountains on the Demptser Highway (1h30 hour). Lil Creek canyon hike: 14km roundtrip, 6 hours
15 Outrider Mountain(1320m) : 6-7 hours, elevation gain 740m
16 Grizzly Valley ridge : 6 hours, 13 km roundtrip, elevation gain 850m. The must in Tombstone park with wonderful view on Monolithe mountain and Grizzly lake.
17 Morning : short hike to Two Mooses lake try to see cariboo. Drive to Carmack (400km-5-6 hours) by the Klondike highway
18 Drive Carmack to Whitehorse 3 hours-200km). Stop on road for viewing point of the Five Finger Rapids. Depending on time available, stop for swimming at Takhini Hot Springs (option-7$CAD). Night at hotel in Whitehorse.
19 Flight to Europe , airport transfers included!
