For this 8th episode of the 2nd season of the 'Places of England' series, I will look at a small town in Shropshire that was once the inspiration of the modern olympics worldwide as we know it by today. Gretton & Wenlock.mp4
The Gretton and Wenlock Railway in Shropshire opene in 1892 as a freight only 2'3 narrow gauge line running between chruch stretton and Much Wenlock. Traffic on the G&WR included coal, slate from Wales and timber and barrels to and from the merchants stor, all situated at gretton. Exchange sidings with the standard gauge GWR existed at either end of the 13 mile line. Passenger trains were introduced in 1899, when the engine shed/workshop at Gretton were added. The model depicts the line during the latter years of the railway's history, from the end of World war 2 up until the closure in 1951. Gretton station was situated five miles from Church Stretton, where the main offices, workshops and engine and carriage sheds were constructed, alongside the standard gauge station.

Wenlock Priory (England)
Tour of Wenlock Priory - 29/4/17

Wenlock Priory, or St Milburga's Priory, is a ruined 12th century monastery, located in Much Wenlock, Shropshire, at grid reference SJ625001. The foundation was a part of the Cluniac order, which was refounded in 1079 and 1082, on the site of an earlier 7th century monastery, by Roger de Montgomery. It is thought to be the final resting place of Saint Milburga, whose bones were reputedly discovered during restoration work in 1101.
