The south east coast is an essential transport hub for Mull, but there are also ancient monuments, coastal walks and stunning secret bays to discover. Salen is the central point in Mull for travelling to all other areas, while Craignure is the busy ferry port for Oban. Iconic Duart Castle, dramatically perched above Duart Bay, is one of several historic attractions.

Seafari Adventures | Fun Things to Do in Scotland | Wild About Argyll
One reason couples are drawn to Loch Melfort Hotel and Restaurant is that it offers thematic trips so that busy couples can simply show up and have a spectacular getaway planned. We chose their Wildlife Break, but they also offer Distillery Breaks and Seasonal Getaways. The Loch Melfort staff organized an amazing marine watching tour with Seafari Adventures (Oban) where we saw seals, deer, and the most brilliant white tailed eagle.

A Guide To Island Hopping in Scotland
Island hopping is a great way to experience the offshore gems and secret spots that Scotland has to offer – whether you have a week or a weekend to spend here, the islands won’t disappoint.
Scotland is famed for its staggering mountains, beautiful lochs, and a variety of gems to explore, but, did you know that our islands are magical and otherworldly? Scotland has over 790 islands, each unique in their own way. With incredible natural beauty, dramatic seascapes and magical atmosphere, you’ll never want to leave island life behind.
Our islands are split into a few groups – Inner Hebrides, Outer Hebrides, Shetland, and Orkney.
Navigating across these bucket list-worthy islands is easier than you may think. Regular ferry connections run from the mainland to the islands on the west and north coasts of Scotland, as well as between the islands themselves. Some ferries allow you to take your car so you can continue exploring when you’re there.
You can even fly to various islands from the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and Inverness. Or why not fly from island-to-island to save time travelling?
Our islands have more to show than you can fit into a day – so why not stay over? There’s plenty of accommodation options on offer – from cosy cottages on the waterfront and eco-friendly self-catering lodges, to quaint campsites, caravans and B&Bs – but make sure you book ahead!
Venture to the Inner Hebrides if you want to explore places seen in blockbuster films, such as Prometheus, Snow White & The Huntsman, and Flash Gordon, or if you’re up for a scenic sailing tour. If magical lands filled with ancient history take your fancy, then head to Orkney!
The Isle of Mull is the perfect location to spot a variety of wildlife, including eagles soaring overhead, and head to Tobermory to see the colourful houses and buildings as well as trying some fresh seafood in one of the local pubs. Or, if you want to sample a dram or two of whisky then head to the Isle of Islay where you can choose from eight distilleries.
On the west coast, enjoy the untouched beauty of the Isle of Jura, let your inner adventurer out and try windsurfing on the Isle of Tiree, or uncover the turbulent history at the ancient abbey on the Isle of Iona.
If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, the waters off the Isle of Coll are a great place to spot giant basking sharks, and even if you’ve never been there, you’re probably already familiar with Skye – it’s one of the most photographed, and talked about, of the Scottish islands.
The Outer Hebrides are perfect if you’re looking for crystal clear waters and golden sandy beaches. Or hop further afield to Orkney and Shetland to tick these magical places off your bucket list. From remnants of ancient civilisations, the chance to spot the Northern Lights during the darker winter months, and the cries of thousands of seabirds, to lively folk music sessions and ferocious Viking culture – there’s an abundance of things to keep you busy!
Why not follow some of our ready-made itineraries, or plan one of your own to make the most out of your island adventure?

Continuing our 2-day Scotland road trip, we visited the Glenfinnan Viaduct to see the steam train crossing then drove up to the Isle of Skye to The Storr. All the while, we experienced typical Scottish weather of wind, rain and sunshine every few minutes or so!
We both thoroughly enjoyed our Scotland road trip and spending time in nature again before our upcoming urban travels throughout the next few months. It's also been great to make travel vlogs similar to the old style of this channel, showing more of a complete journey rather than just a section of a day in a particular area.
Keep an eye out for the future videos over the next few weeks from New York, Toronto, Montreal and Tokyo!
P.S. A note on the drone footage quality: After reviewing the footage from this trip, I noticed a lot of the watercolour effect happening. I've since adjusted from -1 sharpening to +1 sharpening on my Mavic Pro in an attempt to disable to noise reduction algorithm causing the bad quality picture. Hopefully it's all good for the next time I use my drone!

Sea Kayaking Scotland - Around Tobermory.
After the high, highs of Staffa, we had to come back down to Earth. The plan was to launch at Calgary, and head out around Treshnish, but alas the wind put paid to it. So back to Tobermory, and Matt decides to have a paddle around the bay. I was totally dis-interested, but put the boat in, to compare it unloaded, as to fully loaded, for the previous 2 days out around Staffa.Conditions were perfect now, apart from being overcast, and a bit monochrome, but it turned out to be a wonderful little trip, and I'm really glad I did it, in fact, I wish we'd gone out much earlier, and made a full day of it.

Mull 2018 - Part 1 - Wildlife Photography - vlog # 56
mini vlog from our first day on the Isle of Mull.
A female Hen Harrier hunting~ Isle of Mull
Our second full day of rain on our short week-long holiday on the Isle of Mull..Earlier in the day we toured around the west coast marvelling at the beautiful landscapes all around us. Every second counts on this short break and when rain stopped play, like during the brunt of storm Ali, we were glued to the windows of the cottage with binoculars at the ready. After a day of stop start driving we returned to the cottage and while the evening meal was cooking I watched this female Hen Harrier hunting over the rough ground by the loch directly outside Clachan Cottage, Dervaig...What a treat!
Of the UK's birds of prey, this is the most intensively persecuted. Once predating free-range fowl, earning its present name, its effect on the number of grouse available to shoot is the cause of modern conflict and threatens its survival in some parts of the UK, particularly on the driven grouse moors of England and Scotland.
They are listed as a Schedule 1 species under The Wildlife and Countryside Act.
Hen Harriers eat small mammals, most commonly voles, and ground nesting, grassland birds, such as pipits, game-birds and waders..it's an ideal hunting ground here right on the doorstep.
Sea Kayaking in the Inner Hebrides - Multiday Expedition
We hope you enjoy this quick video of our amazing trip to the Inner Hebrides in July this year (2015). Originally we planned to complete an expedition from Castlebay to the most Southern island of Mingulay in the Outer Hebrides but due to ferry strikes we had to delay our trip until further notice.
Instead we visited the Isle of Skye, kayaking from a launch point just south Portree on a coastal road running between Loch Sligachan & Loch Ainort.
From there we kayaked to North Scalpay & made camp for the night.
In the morning with the tidal stream with us, we made our way across to the isle of Raasay & up the east coast to our second night of camping on the northern tip.
On day three we circumnavigated Rona & camped on the west coast of Raasay before returning to our launch the next day.
For a map of our route please check out the google maps link below:
Scotland is a naturally beautiful & wild place, if you have the opportunity please visit & post any pictures or videos. We are always considering the next trip so please post a reply if you have any suggestions.
This video & the whole trip wouldn't have been possible without the support of my awesome partner Steph, thanks for all the help, support & patience ps. sorry about any snoring.
In addition I would like to thank our good friends Ruth & Johnny who changed their arrangements at the last minute to accommodate us on both the trip there & back. We appreciated it more than you know & the first shower after four days in the outback was like heaven. We will see you soon no doubt....
I would like to make a special thanks to Google Earth which allowed me to design the fly through scene at the beginning & generally allowed us to plan this and many other trip.
If you would like any information on our trip & equipment or about sponsorship for our next expedition to the Outer Hebrides, please leave a comment & ill try to get back to you asap.
Thanks for watching
Ethical whale watching versus whaling
As the International Whaling Committee (IWC) meet in Madeira to decide the fate of the worlds whales, the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) and naturalist /WSPA supporter Terry Nutkins and go in search of minke whales off the coast of Scotland. WSPA aims to highlight the many positives of the ethical whale watching and so spent the day off the Isle of Mull, with the expert Sea Life Surveys crew, a member of the not for profit organisation, Wild Scotland in celebration of this industry.
This video was produced prior to June 2014, when we were known as the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA). We are now World Animal Protection:
