Dhobhi Ghat: The biggest Open Air Laundry in Mumbai
Dhobhi Ghat: The biggest Open Air Laundry in Mumbai
kept its promise by giving us alternative accommodation in Hailey Lane.”
Mr Rajinder says that in the 1970s, Hailey Lane was uncrowded. Few ventured into the area. Even today, there are few visitors other than the occasional tourist walking towards Agrasen Ki Baoli, the stepwell nearby.
Pointing to a statue under a neem tree at the ghat’s entrance, Mr Rajinder says, “Nagarsen Baba Ghatwale is our kul devta, the god of the ghats.” The idol has a twirled-up black moustache.
Mr Rajinder says all the dhobis in Hailey Lane are from the Kanaujiya subcaste. They are originally from eastern Uttar Pradesh, their grandfathers settled in Mumbai as washermen. “But our children want to do something else,” he says. “My son is pursuing a BA and my daughter is doing MBA. Why will they wash clothes? It’s too much hard work and not much money.”
A dhobi earns, on an average, Rs 20,000-25,000 a month.
Mumbai still has some dhobi ghats, even in central Mumbai, far from the Yamuna. On Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, for instance, you can see rows of clothes lines near Minto Bridge. Commuters on the west-bound Metro train can spot another dhobi ghat seconds before it pulls into the Pragati Maidan station.
In the yard used for drying clothes, a girl in a red top and jeans is arranging the washed linen. Introducing herself as Barkha, she shyly says in English: “I’m just helping my father. I’m a BA student in Mata Sundri College.” Gesticulating with a dismissive flick of the wrist, she motions towards the ghat, saying, “There is no future in this, no future.”

Laundryman washes clothes at Dhobi Ghat in Delhi
You can now look forward to quicker delivery of your laundry with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) kickstarting modernisation of its dhobi ghats across the city.
Through the use of electrical washers and driers, clothes will be cleaned within a matter of two hours, making deliveries quicker, said Jagdish Mamgain, chairman of MCD works committee.
Delhi's 54 dhobi ghats in which about 5,000 families work will be modernised beginning with Lodhi Road dhobi ghat at a cost of Rs 3 crore.
The Lodhi road ghat, where about 100 families work, has already started witnessing construction activity. The ghat will have 50 units, each consisting of washers and driers.
MCD officials said a treatment plant to recycle 60% waste water will be installed at all the dhobi ghats. Rainwater harvesting, underground and overhead tanks for collection fresh water and a water heater will also be placed. To make them energy efficient, all the machines will be operated through solar energy.
The provisions at the dhobi ghats will remove the need for a place to hang clothes to dry, will be safer for the washermen and through the waste water treatment, dirty water will not flow into the Yamuna, said Mamgain.
He added that a diesel generator set, fire-fighting equipment, LPG gas pipeline and gas cylinder with bhattis will be made available on the ghat. The people running the facility will be made responsible for the upkeep of the machines.
The MCD will also construct storerooms, toilets, urinals, bathrooms and canteen for overall benefit of the dhobis.

The little known Dhobi Ghat of Lutyens Delhi
Dhobi refers to a person whose occupation is to wash clothes. The Dhobi community has been practicing this craft of washing clothes for centuries now.
With the rising development and globalization, the Lutyens Delhi is now a hub of extravagant corporate offices and brands. Connaught Place in particular, is definitely on the list of every tourist who’s looking to explore Delhi as a city. Although, everything in this central patch of the capital has changed over the decades, but there are still some places which are intact and operational.
One such place quietly sits amidst the posh blocks of the Hailey Lane.
The Devi Prasad Sadan Dhobhi Ghat unlike the other open laundries, is tucked away from the river and boasts of its presence at one of the costliest lands of the city.

Crawford Market: Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Market:
Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai,(formerly Crawford Market Marathi: क्रॉफर्ड मार्केट) is one of South Mumbai's most famous markets. It was earlier named after Arthur Crawford, the first Municipal Commissioner of the city. The Market was later named after Mahatma Jotirao Phule after a long struggle by the President of Mahatma Phule Smarak Samiti, Mukundraoji Bhujbal Patil. The market is situated opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters, just north of Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station and west of the J.J. flyover at a busy intersection. The market houses a wholesale fruit, vegetable and poultry market. One end of the market is a pet store. Different varieties of dogs, cats, and birds can be found in this area. Also, endangered species are illegally sold there. Most of the sellers inside the market sell imported items such as foods, cosmetics, household and gift items. It was the main wholesale market for fruits in Mumbai until March 1996, when the wholesale traders were relocated to Navi Mumbai (New Bombay).
The building, completed in 1869, was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. After India's independence, the market was renamed after Maharashtrian social reformer, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. In 1882, the building was the first in India to be lit up by electricity.
The market was designed by British architect William Emerson. The edifice is a blend of Norman and Flemish architectural styles. The friezes on the outside entrance depicting Indian farmers, and the stone fountains inside, were designed by Lockwood Kipling, father of novelist Rudyard Kipling. The market covers an area of 22,471 sq m (2,41,877 sq ft), of which 5,515 sq m (59,363 sq ft) is occupied by the building itself. The structure was built using coarse buff coloured Kurla stone, with redstone from Bassein. It has a 15 m high skylight awning designed to allow the sunlight brighten up the marketplace. This market is mostly closed on Sundays. So if you are planning to do shopping in and around that area, avoid Sundays as very few shops would be open. On other days, its open from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm.Wikipedia

Findia09_butchery in the slums of Mumbai
In this short movie you see one of the countless little butcheries responsible for supplying the inhabitants of the slums of Mumbai with meat. Most of the meat processed is chicken. The few legal regulations concerning the hygiene of the butcheries are hardly ever enforced.
Let's clean up Mumbai!
Filth and garbage are huge problems in the slum areas of Mumbai. There is hardly any municipal system for collecting waste. This video takes slum dwellers on a visual journey with a piece of garbage, showing them the huge and unsustainable landfills where their garbage end up, and introduces them to a hard-working woman who makes her living as a rag-picker in those landfills.
Success stories: This film has been used by NGOs working on the issue of sanitation and have seen an increase of meeting attendances. Most importantly, the Government placed dumpsters in two of the major slum areas for the first time.

International Women's Day: 10 women-only 'Tejaswini Buses' hit Navi Mumbai roads
On the occasion of Women's Day Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), the transport wing of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation, has added 10 ladies special 'Tejaswini Buses', exclusive buses for women, to its fleet. The bus service will ensure women are able to travel without hassles during peak hours. The inauguration was held at Vashi bus depot. This plan was on the anvil for nearly a year, and only now it has been implemented. Relevantly, the theme for International Women’s Day (8 March) this year, “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, puts innovation by women and girls, for women and girls, at the heart of efforts to achieve gender equality. Perhaps launching of 'Tejaswini Buses' is an aim towards taking a smart initiative for women.

Old Madras, Trichinopoly (Trichy) in 1945
Age-old Trichinopoly in the Madras residency, India in 1945. Also seen its fortress, club lifting exercise, laundry at the Chauvery river and finally what the city looks like today. A viewer writes: the places look like Somarasampettai and Uyyakondan Thirumalai .The background at 2.00 - 2.03 and 2.12- 2.21 looks like the Ujjeava nathar Temple, especially with the Brahmin priest walking in the foreground. The bit at 3.33 - 4.02 looks like the Washermen ghat ( Vannan padithurai) near the present day Court complex, where the first Garland for Kuzhumayee is offered.
