Cactus Jack: Lone Star on Capitol Hill - 1932 Presidential Election
Cactus Jack: Lone Star on Capitol Hill reveals the rollicking saga of one of the most powerful but often forgotten figures in U.S. history—John Nance Cactus Jack Garner (1868-1967). The program charts Garner's extraordinary life, from his humble roots in Blossom Prairie, Texas, to his 38-year tenure on Capitol Hill where he wielded power as Speaker of the House during the darkest days of the Great Depression. Garner ran as a presidential candidate at the 1932 Democratic Convention and twice served as vice president to Franklin D. Roosevelt. Cactus Jack offers insights into this brazen political dealmaker who helped reshape the Democratic Party and push through New Deal legislation. Cactus Jack: Lone Star on Capitol Hill opens new chapters in U.S. history—and provides vital clues to the way our nation does business today. Cactus Jack airs on PBS stations across the country on Presidents Day 2016. For more information, visit cactusjack.org.
WGN Channel 9 - Garfield Goose And Friends (Opening Excerpt, 1971)
The Goose Lives!!
Found on an ancient, open-reel black & white skip field recording that was donated to us along with a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff, and tucked away at the end of the reel, this gem was discovered - some footage from Garfield Goose and Friends on WGN Channel 9 that has been lost and unseen for almost 40 years!! (originally broadcast in color, but captured on this early home videotape recorder in black and white)
As you may know, footage from this show is extremely rare. You can probably count on one hand all of the existing clips that survived.
It starts off with that familiar theme music playing (Ethel Smith's Monkey on a String). The opening lingers a bit longer than the other few examples that exist, and then, we see another slide that has likely not been seen in 35+ years, as it's not on any existing footage of the show up until now - Created and Produced by Frazier Thomas. Why was this removed at some point from the opening? Time constraints? Some other reason? Maybe someone out there has the answer.
We zoom into the still of the castle as Frazier Thomas goes through the mail with Gar and Romberg Rabbit.
Jenny Monaco, 5 years old, who attends Kindergarten at Washington Township School, and whose address was Rural Route 1 - Box 77 - Valparaiso, Indiana (amazing how they gave this info out over the air, even if it's only a PO box - a simpler time) - made and sent in a bunny rabbit out of cotton and matches for Gar.
Drew Bandusky of South Lavergne Avenue in Burbank, IL made and sent in a green knit pillow for Gar (his mother helped a little bit).
Greg Davidson of Hillside, IL made and sent a Christmas tree out of colored tissue paper. Don't hold it up to a candle! :-)
Gretchen Novak of West Chicago, IL made what looks like a wooden Mrs. Santa Claus ornament.
Based on all available evidence, we believe this aired on local Chicago TV in December of 1971!

Corp. Bernard P. Maxwell USMC Radio Section, 1945
LUND: This is Marine Radio correspondent Corporal Roger K. Lund speaking from somewhere in the Pacific. Corporal Bernard P. Maxwell, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve of Freeland, Michigan has completed 26 months of service overseas, all of which has been spent with the 1st Division. At Cape Gloucester, December 29th, 1943, he participated in three engagements. December 15th, 1944, he was with the first wave of the assault troops that invaded the island of Peleliu, and for his courageous and heroic achievement in action, was awarded the Bronze Star. April 1st, he was again with the first wave of assault troops that invaded the island of Okinawa. Now, with more than enough time to be eligible to return to the United States, Corp. Maxwell is standing by awaiting transfer back to the USA, behind him a glowing record of duty to his country: 26 months of hard work, dangerous days, and fear-filled nights, he now can look forward to that day when he will again be back home. Bernie, when did you first decide to join the Marine Corps?
MAXWELL: When I was about 15 years old, Rog, but my folks wouldn't sign for me, so I had to wait until I was 17. Then I joined December the 11th, 1942.
LUND: And how soon was it after you came out of boot camp that you went overseas?
MAXWELL: Approximately four months. Immediately after boot camp, I was put in the paratroopers. From there, I was [?] the 16th Replacement Battalion, and was shipped overseas with that outfit the 18th of April in '43.
LUND: It was at Cape Gloucester that you received your Baptism of Fire, is that right?
MAXWELL: That's right, Rog. I was in three major engagements on Cape Gloucester. I landed there December the 29th, 1943.
LUND: For your work on the island of Peleliu, you were awarded the Bronze Star. I know that it's hard to try and talk about something heroic that you yourself have done, but how 'bout giving us some idea of just what you were doing during the period of time for which you received the citation?
MAXWELL: Well, we got ashore, meetin' pretty heavy opposition, and secured that beachhead. The Japs were layin' in lots of mortars and artillery. And about 10 o'clock that night, I found two wounded men on the way back to the— delivering a message to the Company CP, and I took one back with me; and after delivering my message I returned for the other one. I administered first aid to both of them; gave one blood plasma. Then I guided tanks and supporting weapons to the frontline.
LUND: Going in with the assault troops at Okinawa, did you run into any opposition such as I know you ran into on Peleliu?
MAXWELL: No, Rog, we landed without any opposition whatsoever. Our mission was to drive across the island to split the Jap forces in two, then the Army to swing south and the Marines north. I was injured when I fell off my cliff there the third day, spraining an ankle and hurting my left leg. The weather was swell. I was evacuated then to the USS Comfort, and then to a hospital on this island.
LUND: In your 26 months overseas, Bernie, you certainly have had your share of action, excitement, and days when you rather wondered if you would be around the next day to see the sun rise. But now I know you are looking anxiously toward that day when you will be back home. How 'bout saying a few words to those people who are waiting just as anxiously to see you?
MAXWELL: I'd like to send my love to Mom and Dad and Nettie-Murle. That's about all.
LUND: That was Corp. Bernard P. Maxwell, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve of Freeland, Michigan. This is Corp. Roger K. Lund of the U.S. Marine Corps.
Generated from 78 rpm vinyl source to CD on Monday November 16, 1998 in Plymouth, Michigan. Recorded 1945.
