Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo 「東京都現代美術館」
On the northernost part of Kiba Park, Koto Ward, this museum was built in 1995 with a focus on contemporary works of art. As it houses its own collection we can always see these works, but what attracts many visitors are loan exhibitions. It is so huge in space that it can hold even large-scale exhibitions that many other museums in Japan can't afford. By checking what is going on in this museum constantly you can understand the current trends in art as well as great achievements of past maestros.

Naoshima Guide 2019
Nioshima FB Live Report:
in FB version:
Naoshima, a small island in Setonaikai (瀬戸内海) Seto inland sea. The whole island is like an Art object thanks to the Benesse Art-site Naoshima project since 1989. The Benesse holdings worked on this island Naoshima, and other two neighborhood islands; Teshima and Inushima. Contemporary art objects produce a great harmony with spectacular nature and architecture. There are 4 museums in this island as of 2019, and all of them are designed by the famous architect, Ando Tadao. The biggest one is Benesse House Museum. This museum (show the detail in caption) has works in outside and inside the museum. The seaside field is free entry and you’ll encounter interesting objects and enjoy the open feeling. Well, bicycle entry is prohibited in this premise though.
Art Museums:
- Benesse House Museum
- Chichuu museum
- RiFan museum
- Ando-tadao museum
All museums except Benesse House Museum are close on Mondays, so please be careful. Bicycle shops in Miyanoura are open but Honmura area’s is close, so please be careful.
So how to get there? From Osaka, go to Okayama by JR or JR bullet train, then from Okayama, go to Uno station by local train. It will take about 1hr. From Uno station to Uno port is very close, less than 3 mins walk. There are two ports in Naoshima for tourists. Miyaura, the bigger one and Honmura. Honmura port is only for passenger jetty. Ferries for Miyaura port only. The ferry ride is quite comfy, as there is wifi and open space deck, and clean toilets. Even vending machines are there. even though it’s just a 20 mins ride. Pats are allowed to board, but need to put into a cage.
Once you arrived at Miyaura port, I’ll recommend to rent a bicycle. there are some rental bike shops. Electric-aid bicycle is also available.
There are local public busses and charter buses as well.
Here is the island map. Here is the Miyaura port, and here is Honmura area, and there is an Ie-project (Art House Project) that artists use local empty houses to exhibit their artworks. You’ll enjoy Japanese local street scenery and outdoor art objects too. Ando museum is in this area too.
You’ll feel the beautiful nature and unique art works! Enjoyable moment guaranteed in this island :)

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Kiyosumi Shirakawa is a city in Koto-ku, Tokyo where you can feel the history of the city. There are many residential areas and temples, leaving behind the image of the good old days. In recent years, young people have begun to open their own shops, creating a unique atmosphere with old book stores. There are also many must-see galleries for contemporary art lovers.
In Kiyosumi Shirakawa, there is a museum that reproduces the cityscape of Fukagawa in the Edo period and the way of living.
About 3 minutes from Kiyosumi Shirakawa Station on the Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line. “Time trip” begins from Fukagawa Edo Museum Street where you can see the old town.
