Granada landscape, Granada, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
Granada is a city and the capital of the province of Granada, in the autonomous community of Andalusia, Spain. Granada is located at the foot of the Sierra Nevada mountains, at the confluence of four rivers, the Beiro, the Darro, the Genil and the Monachil. It sits at an average elevation of 738 metres above sea level, yet is only one hour by car from the Mediterranean coast, the Costa Tropical. Nearby is the Sierra Nevada Ski Station, where the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 1996 were held.
In the 2005 national census, the population of the city of Granada proper was 236,982, and the population of the entire urban area was estimated to be 472,638, ranking as the 13th-largest urban area of Spain. About 3.3% of the population did not hold Spanish citizenship, the largest number of these people (31%; or 1% of the total population) coming from South America. Its nearest airport is Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport. The Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace, is in Granada. It is the most renowned building of the Andalusian Islamic historical legacy with its many cultural attractions that make Granada a popular destination among the touristic cities of Spain. The Almohad influence on architecture is also preserved in the Granada neighborhood called the Albaicín with its fine examples of Moorish and Morisco construction. Granada is also well-known within Spain for the University of Granada which has about 80,000 students spread over five different campuses in the city. The pomegranate (in Spanish, granada) is the heraldic device of Granada. The region surrounding Granada has been populated since at least 5500 B.C. and experienced Roman and Visigothic influences. Elibyrge was used as the name for what is now Granada by the 7th century B.C. and, by the 1st century A.D., it had become a Roman municipalilty known as lliberri. The Umayyad conquest of Hispania, starting in 711 A.D., brought large parts of the Iberian Peninsula under Moorish control and established Al-Andalus. In the early 11th century, after a civil war that ended the Caliphate, the Berber, Zawi ben Ziri, established an independent kingdom for himself, the Taifa of Granada, with Elvira/Illiberis as its capital. Jewish people were established in another area close to Illiberis, called Gárnata or Gárnata al-yahūd (Granada of the Jews). Granada's historical name in the Arabic language was غرناطة (Ġarnāṭah ). The word Gárnata (or Karnatah) possibly means Hill of Strangers. Because the city was situated on a low plain and, as a result, dificult to protect from atacks, the ruler decided to transfer his residence to the higher situated area of Gárnata. In a short time this town was transformed into one of the most important cities of Al-Andalus. By the end of the 11th century, the city had spread across the Darro to reach the hill of the future Alhambra, and included the Albayzín neighborhood (also called Albaicín or El Albaicín, now a World Heritage site). The Alhambra occupies a small plateau on the southeastern border of the city in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada above the Assabica valley. Some of the buildings may have existed before the arrival of the Moors. The Alhambra as a whole is completely walled, bordered to the north by the valley of the Darro, to the south by the al-Sabika, and to the east of the Cuesta del Rey Chico, which in turn is separated from the Albaicín and Generalife, located in the Cerro del Sol. In the 11th century the Castle of the Alhambra was developed as a walled town which became a military stronghold that dominated the whole city. But it was in the 13th century, with the arrival of the first monarch of the Nasrid dynasty, Mohammed I ibn Nasr (Mohammed I, 1238–1273), that the royal residence was established in the Alhambra. This marked the beginning of its heyday. The Alhambra became palace, citadel and fortress, and was the residence of the Nasrid sultans and their senior officials, including servants of the court and elite soldiers (13th-14th centuries). In 1527 Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor demolished part of the architectural complex to build the Palace which bears his name. Although the Catholic Monarchs had already altered some rooms of the Alhambra after the conquest of the city in 1492, Charles V wanted to construct a permanent residence befitting an emperor. Around 1537 he ordered the construction of the Peinador de la Reina, or Queen's dressing room, where his wife Isabel lived, over the Tower of Abu l-Hayyay. There was a pause in the ongoing maintenance of the Alhambra from the 18th century for almost a hundred years, and during the French domination substantial portions of the fortress were blown apart. The repair, restoration and conservation that continues to this day did not begin until the 19th century. The complex currently includes the Museum of the Alhambra, with objects mainly from the site of the monument itself and the Museum of Fine Arts.

Traveling Granada, Spain - Cinematic
Recap video of our trip to Granada, Spain in May of 2019. We stayed 3 1/2 days and could have stayed much longer. Granada is such a great Spanish city with tons of life and things to do. We arrive by bus from Seville(3 hours) and walked all the way from the Granada bus station to our hotel downtown which took about an hour in the hot summer sun.

Some videos have been shot in slow motion at 1080p while others at 4K Ultra HD then downconverted to standard HD. Everything was shot with the Sony A7 III with the DJI Ronin-S gimbal. The lens I used was the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM.
Much of the video focuses on our private tour in Alhambra and Generalife. The three-hour tour was the only way we were able to get in since the tickets had been sold out months in advance and the trip was very last minute. Some other highlights include the Fundacion Rodriguez-Acosta Museum which is pretty close to Alhambra. La Cartuja Monastery which the chapel is amazing to visit and well worth the price of admission. Palacio de la Madraza, Mirador de San Nicolas, Carrera del Darro and just walking around Granada round out the other highlights found in this video.

Ori Gersht's Pomegranate
Ori Gersht's photos and videos startle, seduce, and sometimes explode. Gersht's painterly image, Pomegranate, almost looks like the 17th century original by Juan Sánchez Cotán that it is based on. Almost, until the image starts to move. Many of Gersht's works incorporate traces of his childhood in Tel Aviv with their explosive climaxes that acknowledge the violence of the modern world. In Hebrew, the word for pomegranate is the same as grenade.

Botticelli could fetch 30 million dollars at Frieze sale
(1 Oct 2019) LEAD IN
A Botticelli painting dating from 1500 could fetch some 30 million dollars when it hits the international market.
The portrait by the Renaissance master of a humanist poet, said to be the last Boticelli in private hands, is generating huge excitement around the London Frieze art fair, which is about to open.
STORY-LINE
This is the face of the humanist poet Michele Marrulo, a Greek Renaissance scholar, poet and soldier.
His portrait is the work of the renowned Renaissance artist, Sandro Bottecelli.
The austere painting, which dates from 1500, is on show at this year's pretigious contemporary art fair, Frieze, held in London.
It's the last known painting by the Italian master artist to be owned privately.
Marullo was a soldier and an important poet at the Medici court in Florence. He married Alessandra Scala, a Florentine poet, and their love story inspired the writing of Romola, a novel by George Eliot.
It is believed that Scala commissioned the portrait after the death of her husband. According to art experts, this work of art was hand painted by Botticelli alone, without any help from his assistants.
The painting has been on loan since 2004 to the Prado Museum in Madrid. Now its owners are hoping to collect around $30 million USD when it goes on sale at Frieze on Wednesday (2nd October 2019).
Carl Brandon Strehlke is the Curator Emeritus of the Philadelphia Museum of Art (USA). An expert in Italian art, he has curated the Trinity Fine Art catalogue dedicated to the portrait of Marrulo by Botticelli.
Speaking at the International Biennal Antiques Fair in Florence, he says Botticelli's portrait of Michele Marrulo, which is going to be presented at the Trinity Fine Art Gallery at the Frieze Fair in London is a very very important painting, first of all, because of who painted it, Sandro Botticelli, one of the great masters of Florentine Renaissance, and secondly because of the person who's portraited, Michele Marrulo, a great great poet and adventurer of the Renaissance, both who shows of the size of the renaissance men.
He is showing bust-length with wild eyes, hair out of place, it seems as if he is about to say something or talk, he's really been able to capture him as if he were living, even though the painting might be posthumous as it could very well be painted after Michele Marrulo's death by drowning in 1500.
The sale of the portrait is being arranged by the Trinity Art Gallery in London and the gallery owner, Italian art dealer Carlo Orsi.
But there's a hitch.
Spanish law on cultural treasures might create difficulties for a foreign buyer to bring it home.
The El Prado Museum has been in possession of the painting for more than a decade, and Spain declared it ''a work of cultural interest'' in 1988. That means it cannot lose its link to Spain.
Such works ''can only cross our frontiers with official authorisation and for a limited period of time established by the permit,'' according to the Spanish culture ministry.
The painting is currently in London on a permit, and if it is sold, must be returned to Spain by Oct. 25. The Spanish cultural ministry has the right of first refusal to match the price.
The asking price for the Botticelli is 30 million (dollars) so that would be the price for a sale, explains Orsi. The Spanish state can make an offer to buy the painting, if they want to keep it in the Prado (Museum) for example.
Frieze London is open to the public 3-6 October 2019.
