In our first ever Morelia vlog, we are talking about some of the things that totally surprised us about this city in Michoacán. They're not all bad and they're not all good—but they are things we weren't expecting about Morelia 2018. Along the way, we are exploring various parts of the city like El Centro de Morelia, the Morelia Aqueduct (Acueducto de Morelia), and the gorgeous Morelia cathedral. ¿Que hacer en Morelia? A LOT! And we barely just scratched the surface while talking about the colectivos, interesting social behavior in Morelia, unique food to Morelia / Michoacan, and life in Morelia.

SPICY FIRE Dip Tacos & BEST Street Tacos in Morelia Mexico
My second day in Morelia and I had some of the spiciest dip tacos and also some steamed tacos! Later, I went to an awesome candy museum called Real Dulces Morelianos, and I defiantly felt like Charlie and won a golden ticket to the candy factory. After some sweets, I had to go check out a taco stand that I couldn't get to try in my vlog that I talked about. And it was one of the best street tacos I had! I know there's probably a lot more amazing tacos all around Mexico City. So I can't wait to go and try all the different vendors.

MORELIA - The real reason we're done making videos here.
We love Morelia's beauty, Michoacan food, & after-dark events, but this is our last Mexico travel vlog here.

We have spent two weeks in Morelia, Michoacan. During that time, we've had the opportunity to visit museums, enjoy the gorgeous architecture, learn more about the history of Morelia, and explore a brand new city and culture we had never experienced.
Many people told us not to visit Michoacan because it's considered one of the most dangerous states in Mexico, but we did not experience any violence or danger during our trip. Well, unless you consider being so close to fireworks at the Morelia Cathedral to be especially dangerous. We think Laska had the best time of her life during this trip in Morelia, Mexico.
If you're looking for what to do in Morelia, we totally recommend trying some of the comida Michoacana (Michoacan food) if you travel to Morelia: we enjoyed gazpacho, corundas, local cheese, and local Mezcal! There is SO much food we didn't get the opportunity to try while in Michoacán, so we hope to come back and visit again. Perhaps on our next trip, we can visit the neighboring Pueblos Magicos and towns of Patzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, Santa Clara del Cobre, and others.
Find out why we're only putting out two travel Mexico vlogs about Morelia despite us being here for two weeks. The reason might not be what you think. And join us for our next Mexico vlog as we share some of the tourist traps and scams from our trip to Playa del Carmen. After that, we'll be heading to the state of Hidalgo for the first time to visit Grutas de Tolontongo!!
OUR FAVORITE RESTAURANTS IN MORELIA:
1. Restaurante Lu Cocina Michoacana - Fine dining at affordable prices. A great place to try traditional Michoacan food.
2. La Cerrada Elote Morelia - This is the best elote in Morelia! It has all the sauces you could ever want for your elote/esquite (corn).
3. La Cerrada Gazpacho Morelia - Truth be told, this is the only gazpacho we tried in Morelia, but a giant cup was 35 pesos and delicious!
4. Panoli Morelia - This Morelia restaurant has excellent prices, good food, and a great view of the cathedral in El Centro de Morelia. It also has a bakery attached with mouth-watering pastries and sweet bread (pan dulce).
5. Tata Mezcaleria - Another great restaurant with traditional comida Michoacana, mezcal, and excellent service. Higher prices than Lu Cocina, but the food is worth it.
6. Cafe Loto - If you're looking for well-priced, fresh vegan food, this is the place to go! It's very close to El Centro of Morelia with a quaint atmosphere.

Morelia, Mexico is a city of around a million inhabitants. There, the grid of the colonial center occupies a broad hilltop. Some of Morelia’s low-rise buildings are brightly painted, but most of the façades are hewn from the local pink-hued cantera limestone. Colonial-era churches glitter with lavish decoration — the interior of the Santuario de Guadalupe looks like a Fabergé egg — and museums such as the Palacio Clavijero host well-curated art exhibitions. The arcaded palaces of Morelia’s former nobility ring the heart of the city, a grand rectangle formed by the Plaza de Armas, the cathedral and the Plaza Melchor Ocampo. Nowadays, these arcades overflow with restaurant and café tables, ideal for people-watching, and several of the palaces have been converted into atmospheric hotels.

Hot on the heels of Mexico City's FITA (International Tourism Fair of the Americas), Michoacan 's beautiful colonial heritage city of Morelia captured a world-wide crowd of numerous exhibiting countries--including Indonesia, Slovakia, and Japan--plus twenty Mexican states, and also several corporate exhibitors, was all designed to attract tourism and travel both to Mexico and to their own venues.
The feria was most particularly lit up by the unique charism of Mexican federal tourism secretary Gloria Guevara Manzo. She also made the cocktail night delight by attending the Feria Mundial de Turismo Cultural opening night cocktail party. The party was held in the very heart of the Unesco site of down town Morelia, in the pure jewel of the colonial heritage [history & architecture heritage ] in the central patio of Morelia mid-17th century Palacio Clavijero [now a Museum].
The Opening Gala Night was very full of creative energy, and certainly thanks to the special guest, to Gloria Guevara, it included mexican music [ all styles], folkloric dancing, drinks and cusine - mexican food [Mexico has been awarded 1st cuisine in the world as a world heritage too!].... The event was a great opportunities to make new acquaintances and hug friends. Mexico is fabulous for Friendship, and genuine real lifestyle.

Bosque Cuauhtemoc in Morelia
The Bosque Cuauhtémoc (formerly known as Bosque San Pedro) is located on the corner of Aqueduct and Ventura Puente Avenue. It has a lot of trees, several quarry fountains, a beautiful Gazebo, the statue of Cuauhtemoc and many stone benches. The Natural History Museum and the Contemporary Art Museum are located within the Park, as well as the DIF and the Forestry Commission State´s offices. It also has areas for children with different types of swings, slides, etc.
The building of the Contemporary Art Alfredo Zalce Museum is from the nineteenth century with a significant French influence. It has two levels and 13 exhibition´s rooms. It is located on Aqueduct Avenue. It has been named after the great Michoacan artist Alfredo Zalce, whose work is part of the museum collection.
The Natural History Museum was named after Dr. Manuel Martinez Solorzano a naturalist, physician and scientist. He was the director of the Michoacan Museum for several years, doing a permanent exhibition with emphasis on environmental awareness.

Elderly dancers in Morelia (Michoacán)
The old men came out on Saturday. They've been dancing like this in Patzcuaro for at least half a millennium. They are the Viejitos (sometimes modified to Viejecitos ) -- little old men -- and their masked, costumed dance is a little bit history, a little bit floor show. Which is appropriate, since this corner of Michoacan is a little bit open-air museum and a little bit tourist stop.
In one version of the story, the dance of the Viejitos was originally the dance of the dissed. According to this account, the stiff, lurching, rhythmically challenged dance originated as a way for the indigenous population to make fun of their elderly Spanish overlords. This explanation seems supported by the dancers' pink masks, the color of a fair skin that has encountered tropical sun for the first time.
Au contraire, say other sources (though they say it in Spanish): It is a celebration of old age and reflects traditional veneration of the elderly. They contend that the dance was performed in the region even before the European conquest.
