''When a nation becomes wealthy, and the past five to seven years have been very favourable for the Russian economy, people start buying national art. So there is a strongly pronounced interest in Russian art and Russian art of the 'Paris School', which was created by our emigrant artists. The last four to six years have also witnessed a new interest in Soviet artists.''

''I started working in the Russian department (at Sothebys). Well we created the Russian department with my departed colleague, John Stewart in 1988. At that time we had no Russian clients, not one Russian client. No one in Russia was really making a living from Russian art and so it's amazing when I come here now and I see how many people are making a living from, for the most part, what is basically the (Russian word translated as 'remnants') of an old empire.

19. SOUNDBITE (English) William MacDougall, founder of MacDougall's action house in London :
''The part of what has happened is that Russian prices has caught up with equivalent Western art and now they have actually perhaps increased a bit above. But again that's not unusual, if you take American art, it has higher prices than the equivalent French art and it does for the same reason, that there is a shortage. There has only been 250 years of secular Russian art and so there is shortage of art relative to people who can afford to buy.

Some antique items came into the possession of the state even though previously they were in private collections. The rest were either destroyed or taken out of the country during the years of World War II, so indeed it is very hard to find quality Russian or European art pieces in today's market.

TSN Discussions: Afghan (mis)Representation?
Recently Afghans have been on American television screens as reality television stars and for even longer have been depicted in major Hollywood films.
The latest film to do this, Rock the Kasbah, brings into question the depictions of Afghans and Afghanistan in the media. But this is just one medium in which portrayals of Afghans are being crafted by non-Afghans. There are other media where Afghans are being written by Afghans, such as novels and even non-fiction memoirs.
What are the implications of these media representations of Afghans? Does this perpetuate certain images of the community or allow opportunity for the broader public to better understand Afghans? Are there gendered biases from Afghan or even Western culture embedded in these depictions? Does it even matter if Afghans or non-Afghans write about Afghans?
The Tales of Chekhov Audiobook by Anton CHEKHOV | Short Stories with subtitles
This is the first of thirteen volumes of Anton Chekhov's short stories, translated by Constance Garnett.
Anton Chekhov was a Russian doctor who turned to fiction as a hobby, and quickly blossomed into one of the masters of the short story genre. Though he is arguably best known for his dramatic works, such as The Cherry Orchard, his stories are widely considered to be some of the most perfect examples of short fiction ever written.
Constance Black Garnett was an English housewife who taught herself Russian as a hobby, and subsequently introduced the English-speaking world to some of the greatest Russian authors, including Chekhov and Dostoevsky. Though she was almost entirely self-taught in her knowledge of Russian, she was a prolific translator, and her works are still lauded today for their readability and accuracy. On the Eve by Ivan Turgenev | Audiobook with subtitles
On the Eve appeared in 1860, two years before Fathers and Sons, Turgenev's most famous novel. It is set in the prior decade (by the end of the novel, the Crimean War (1853-56) has already broken out. It centers on the young Elena Nikolaevna Stakhov, daughter of Nikolai Arteyemvitch and Anna Vassilyevna Stahov. Misunderstood by both her parents (Nikolai Artemyevitch is at least as interested in his German mistress as in members of her family) she is on friendly terms with both the would-be professor Andrei Petrovitch Bersenyev and the rising young sculptor Pavel Yakovitch Shubin, both of whom might be -- or might not be -- in love with her. The appearance of Dmitri Nikanorovitch Insarov, a young Bulgarian revolutionary who seeks independence for his nation,, alters the balance of her relationships however. The book is praised, among other things, for the way in which Turgenev manages to describe the varying emotions of a girl on the verge of womanhood. But it is also a portrayal of a kind of youthful Russian society striving towards a modern cosmopolitanism, that will shake off the parochialism and narrowness of its elders.
A geopolitical note: Bulgaria was, at the time, still part of the decaying Ottoman empire in the Balkans, but already the vultures were circling -- Russia, Britain, and France -- hoping to get what they could when the collapse came. Hence, in large part, the coming of the Crimean War, hence the Balkan conflicts of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, hence in part World War I, and ultimately the Balkan wars of the late twentieth century (Kosovo, Serbia, Croatia, Bosnia, etc. etc.). (Summary by Nicholas Clifford)
