Shepton Mallet Friday Market 2015
Shepton Mallet's Friday Market is centred around the iconic, very old and beautifully photogenic market cross. One of Somerset's most down to earth markets, it's not a tourist trap and is much loved by the locals, for its very cheap deals for fruit and veg, its brilliant fish stall, Winnie's Bakery, for fresh bread and cakes and the egg and pet stall, as well as the plant and flower stall. There is a growing campaign to regenerate the market from the bottom up by Helen Reader, who is organising 'Suitcase Sellers' to give the market a fresh new appeal, promote small local businesses and give people the chance to sell unwanted clothes and bric a brac. Why should you come to Shepton Mallet Market? Come because it is 'Chic and Cheerful'! Get More for your Money! Bag a Bargain. This ain't a posh market, and the prices ain't posh either....!

UK pantomime -- Jack & the Beanstalk - by The British Floridian Club of the Suncoast Jan 2003
Pantomime is a traditional form of theater that dates back to Ancient Greece. The modern show is a New Year's entertainment that involves bad puns, pantomime horses and cross dressing. The audience is encouraged to shout out remarks and boo the villain.
The Pantomime cow seen here causes a commotion during its entrance by spraying the audience with a water pistol...
This video was aired as part of Video Cafe No. 40 community access television show in Feb 2003.

Ilminster Childrens Carnival 2009 Part ONE
Childrens carnival procession through streets of Ilminster in south Somerset. September 2009.
The East Somerset Heritage Railway.
The East Somerset Railway is a 2 1⁄2-mile (4km) heritage railway in Somerset, running between Cranmore and Mendip Vale. Prior to the Beeching Axe, the railway was once part of the former Cheddar Valley line that ran from Witham to Yatton, meeting the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway at Wells.
The East Somerset Railway Company was incorporated under the East Somerset Railway Act on 5 June 1856 and was built as a 7ft1⁄4in (2,140mm) broad gauge line. The line was originally between Witham railway station and Shepton Mallet and this line opened on 9 November 1858. It was planned by Mr. Brunel and built by engineer Mr. Ward and contractor Mr. Brotherwood. The station buildings at Shepton and Witham Friary, as well as the bridges along the route, were constructed of Inferior Oolite from nearby Doulting Stone Quarry. Shepton was now 129 miles (208km) from London by rail, a journey of just over four hours.
Four years later the line was extended to Wells; this part of the line was opened on 1 March 1862. The East Somerset Railway was bought by the Great Western Railway on 2 December 1874, shortly after it was converted to 4ft8 1⁄2in (1,435mm) standard gauge.
In 1878, the GWR joined the East Somerset line with the Cheddar Valley line to Wells, which had been built by the Bristol and Exeter Railway, by obtaining running rights over a section of the Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway and running its trains through the S&DJR Wells station at Priory Road, though GWR trains did not stop at Priory Road until 1934. At this stage, the main traffic became the through trains from Yatton to Witham and the East Somerset Railway station in Wells closed, with Wells (Tucker Street) becoming the station for the city on the line. The Yatton to Witham service remained in use with the GWR and later BR until passenger service finally ceased in 1963 as a result of the Beeching Axe, however trains carrying bitumen continued until 1985.
In 1971/72, the artist David Shepherd came across, viewed and later purchased Cranmore station and a section of the track to house and run his two locomotives; the BR 2-10-0 Class 9F No. 92203 Black Prince and BR Standard 4 4-6-0 No. 75029 'The Green Knight'. In 1973, the line opened offering Brake Van rides before extending first to Merryfield in 1980 and then to Mendip Vale and into Cranmore station itself in 1985.
Today the railway plays host to a variety of preserved diesel and steam locomotives.
The East Somerset Railway only operates the line between Cranmore, Cranmore West, Merryfield Lane Halt and Mendip Vale. Between the last two sections, the train runs through the Doulting Railway Cutting Site of Special Scientific Interest. The section between Cranmore and the mainline is used for heavy quarry traffic to the nearby Merehead Quarry.
In 1991, a new station building was constructed at Cranmore which now includes a cafe, booking office, gift shop and toilets. The platform then extends to the old station which is now a museum. On the platform is an old K4 red telephone box which incorporates a stamp machine and post box. It was made around 1927 and is one of only 50 made to that design. Opposite the platform is a signal box dating from 1904 and is the standard GWR pattern of the period. Close to Cranmore station are the engine sheds and workshop (known together as Cranmore Shed) which were built in 1973, (during the preserved line's restoration at the time).
Cranmore Traincare and Maintenance and Services (CTMS) was set up in 1995 at the Cranmore base of the ESR. They carry out professional repairs to carriages and bodywork overhauls on Diesel Locomotives. CTMS is based opposite the ESR loco workshop in a separate preservation era shed.
In recent years the ESR has gained a reputation for restorations and overhauls at its Cranmore headquarters. In 2014, LMS Ivatt Class 2 No. 46447 was restored to working order from scrapyard condition, being followed by LMS Ivatt Class 2 2-6-2T No. 41313 in 2017 for the Isle of Wight Steam Railway. It is currently overhauling GWR 5205 Class No. 5239 Goliath for the Dartmouth Steam Railway.

2 Tunnels Greenway Bike ride, Bath. Full 12.5 miles in real time. Sunday 6th August 2017
I found out about this from someone at work that has done the 12.5 mile ride. Thought must have a go, so today was the day. Warm and dry as BBC Weather web site said.
Park at nearby Park and Ride. 5 minutes if quick to start of route.
I did this 3 times. First time was the longer time as did the photos, went from the park and ride side of river. Not over the footbridge at Lidl. 2nd and 3rd time round went over bridge to start at Lidl car park enterance. Used the 2nd time round for the video here.
Total of 56.5 minutes and tunnels at 5.5 minutes and 8 minutes.
I did 44.66 miles in total. Was going to go into Lidl for the toilet after 1st time round but could see through the window that was out of order. So pub nearby on main road corner, Bit of a cheak!.
So back to car park and another 20p to have a wee. Back down Brassmill Lane to the Lidl and off we went for a 2nd and 3rd time.
27.9MPH Max
13.5MPH Average
3 Hours 18 minutes moving.
And still had 9 miles range left on battery. If dropped it down from Sport power to a mix of Tour and a bit of Eco would have done 1 more lap but had enough by then.
Get on path here and not 90 Seconds to Lidl bridge if quick.

Right click on blue line (route) and elevation profile is good.
You don't need to sign in or have an account.
Some photos as well.

Pub Crawl #1 - North-East Mendips (2016)
A year ago today a friend gave me the keys to his battered Volkswagen Golf and instructed me to drive him and another friend ‘out west’. We headed along the A366 into Mendip District, stopping at fourteen village pubs along the B3139, A367 Fosse Way and Mells Valley before last orders were called.
British pubs are in decline. The secular, traditional glue of community cohesion is being replaced with the insular and disposable coffee shop.
Gone is the religious observance of patronage equal, the opportunity to hear out one man’s problems and debate a solution. Gone is the trade of favours amongst one another for mutual benefit, and gone are the barstool philosophers who underpinned the social conscience that earned the global respect our wind-battered isles enjoy today.
Accompanied by pounding, dirty techno music, I present:

Brewed by Wild Beer
Style: Fruit Beer
Shepton Mallet, England
Serve in Flute, Shaker
The Story behind the beer:
After a couple of beers one evening with our friends at Beavertown we came to the conclusion that we wanted to brew a beer together that went beyond what was expected. We spent a while trying to figure out what ingredients to use, deciding upon a fruit addition to the beer.
Not only we did we decide to add fruit, but it seemed exciting to try and use as much fruit as we possibly could. A thousand kilograms seemed about right. But what would a ton of raspberries actually taste like in a beer, after all we didn't just want to make raspberry juice.
We have recently been trialling some yeasts and bacteria that we have harvested from local orchards and went with adding an oak barrel full of some of this wildly fermenting beer. It has given Rubus a beautiful dry, tart character without too much of the residual raspberry sweetness. We have seasoned with gorgeous, floral Long Pepper and used a 9 grain base to the beer. We used the same base in a brown sour we have being aged at Beavertown.
Enjoy Rubus Maximus, it's very special, and won't be around for long...

long pepper AKA balinese / bengali pepper
Long pepper
Long pepper, sometimes called Indian long pepper, is a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae, cultivated for its fruit, which is usually dried and used as a spice and seasoning
INDIAN LONG PEPPER OVERVIEW INFORMATION
Indian long pepper is a plant. The fruit of the plant is used to make medicine. Indian long pepper is sometimes used in combination with other herbs in Ayurvedic medicine.
Indian long pepper is used to improve appetite and digestion, as well as treat stomachache, heartburn, indigestion, intestinal gas, diarrhea, and cholera.
It is also used for lung problems including asthma, bronchitis, and cough.
Other uses include treatment of headache, toothache, vitamin B1 deficiency (beriberi), coma, epilepsy, fever, stroke, trouble sleeping (insomnia), leprosy, extreme tiredness, enlarged spleen, muscle pain, nasal discharge, paralysis, psoriasis, intestinal worms, snakebites, tetanus, thirst, tuberculosis, and tumors.
Some women use Indian long pepper during childbirth and during the 3-6 weeks following childbirth while the uterus returns to normal size. Women also use Indian long pepper to stimulate menstrual flow; to cause abortions; and to treat menstrual cramps, infertility, and loss of interest in sexual activity.
How does it work?
Indian long pepper contains a chemical called piperine. Piperine may be able to fight certain parasites that can infect people. It also seems to change the lining of the intestines. This change allows some drugs and other substances taken by mouth to be better absorbed by the body.
