Kanazawa Part 2: Higashi Chaya District, Nagamachi Samurai District, Parade
Part 6 of our 2 week trip to Japan. We spent 2 nights in Kanazawa and were lucky enough to be there during the The Hyakumangoku Matsuri Festival which included a massive parade that seemed to span the whole city. Also includes the Geisha district, Kenrokuen Garden, and not surprisingly more food.

I've made a full self guided tour of Kanazawa (with map). You can find it on our website at:
We start at Kanazawa station, where you will find the iconic modern tori gate, and most recognized landmark in Kanazawa Japan. This beautiful gate was completed in 2005, along with the re modeling of Kanazawa station. You can easily get to Kanazawa from Tokyo via Shinkansen in as little as 2.5 hours.
Nagamachi or the Samurai district: This neighbourhood was once the lavish district that the Samurai called home. The neighbourhood was in it's prime during the Edo period, but when we visited he were told that the last resident ( Samurai relative) of the traditional wooden Samurai homes moved out in the early 1990's!! The neighbour is beautiful to wander through. You can go inside many of the traditional homes, for a small fee or donation.

Kanazawa Higashi Chaya District Japan ????????
A chaya (lit. teahouse) is an exclusive type of restaurant where guests are entertained by geisha who perform song and dance. During the Edo Period, chaya was found in designated entertainment districts, usually just outside the city limits. Kanazawa has three, well-preserved chaya districts, Higashi Chayagai (Eastern Chaya District), Nishi Chayagai (Western Chaya District) and Kazuemachi.
Of the three districts, the Higashi Chaya District (東茶屋街, Higashi Chayagai) is the largest and by far the most interesting. Two chaya, the Shima Teahouse, and Kaikaro Teahouse are open to the public. Other buildings along the central street now house cafes and shops. One of the shops, Hakuza, sells gold leaf products, a specialty of Kanazawa, and displays a tea ceremony room which is completely covered in gold leaf. ????????

Nagamachi is one of the 4 historic districts of Kanazawa City in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. The other three, Higashi Chaya, Nishi Chaya and Kazuemachi, are the old neighborhoods of geishas, Nagamachi is that of samurai. From the other nearby historic district, Nishi Chaya, one can walk there (about 700 meters) across one of the many bridges that cross the Sai River. From the castle also, it is only a few minutes walk to the west. The neighborhood adjoins the memorial park of the castle.

Kanazawa, Japan - Higashi Chaya-gai Geisha District (2019)
Higashi Chaya-gai is a beautifully preserved historical area of Kanazawa with many traditional wooden buildings. This area was established in 1820 as an entertainment district for rich merchants and nobility.
The name Higashi Chaya-gai literally means “Eastern Teahouse District,” because the chaya, or teahouses, were where wealthy customers would be entertained by geisha with traditional music, dancing, and drinking games. Many of these buildings have today been converted into restaurants or souvenir craft shops, but there are two geisha teahouses that are open to the public during the day. In this article we will introduce Higashi Chaya-gai’s chief highlights.

Samurai Garden Walking - Japan, Kanazawa City (金沢市)
A walk through an old samurai garden. Very little of the house is left but the garden is more or less untouched. It is interesting that some of the samurai houses in the Kanazawa's samurai district were still inhabitable (most probably by the descendants of the samurai. Follow us on twitter:
