Japan Travel: Looking into Higashiyama Kaii's World at the Nagano Shinano Art Museum, Nagano, Japan
Located in Joyama park, adjacent to the Zenkoji Temple in Nagano is the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum (長野県信濃美術館). Responding to needs of the citizens desiring a museum in Nagano, the prefectural government together with the local news corporation founded the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum in 1966. The exhibits are changed among the four basic themes of “recognizing and promoting local culture,” “introducing a wide spectrum of art,” “art in life,” and “art that nurtures appreciation,” allowing a large range of artwork to be displayed throughout the year. Visitors can view artwork from local artists as well as landscape paintings which show off the beautiful scenery of Shinshu.
Next to the Nagano Prefectural Shinano Art Museum is the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery The famous Japanese painter Higashima Kaii donated more than 960 of his artwork, including paintings and sketches, as several books to Nagano Prefecture. To house these magnificent treasures, in 1990 the Higashiyama Kaii Gallery was built. Among the works displayed are masterpieces such as “Vibrant Greens,” “Evening Quiet” and so on. Visitors will find many of his works depict the beautiful Nagano scenery. The pieces are changed every two months.

Onsen, Castle, Museum and more to visit in Matsumoto, Nagano, Japan / 冬の松本を堪能しました【Vlog】
I visited my hometown Matsumoto, Nagano in new year holidays and tour around the city.
If you ever plan to come to this historical and cultural city, these are the good spots I highly recommend.
・01:32 Tobira Onsen Myojinkan
The Tobira Onsen Myojinkan Hotel welcomes you to discover the secret charm. It is a marvel of comfort and beauty in the Yatsugatake National Park, a beautiful protected forest surrounded by calm mountains that offer therapeutic views. Myojinkan has been receiving visitors since 1931, who come to connect with nature and enjoy the serene environment.
・06:03 Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's premier historic castles, along with Himeji Castle and Kumamoto Castle. The building is also known as the Crow Castle due to its black exterior. The keep (tenshukaku), which was completed in the late sixteenth century, maintains its original wooden interiors and external stonework. It is listed as a National Treasure of Japan.
・6:44 Kaichi School
The Kaichi School was one of the first schools in Japan. It opened in a temporary building in May 1873, the year after the first major education reforms were introduced by the new Ministry of Education. In 2019 the school was designated as National Treasure of Japan.
・6:49 Matsumoto City Museum of Art
The artist Yayoi Kusama born in Matsumoto and the museum has famous giant objects of her work The Visionary Flowers outside of the building, and more art pieces inside.

Japan Travel: Togakure Ninpo Museum secret door & tricks, Japan Nagano No.033
Japan Travel: Togakure Ninpo Museum secret door & tricks, Japan Nagano No.033
The Togakure Ninpo Museum (Togakure-ryū Ninpō Shiryōkan) is devoted to the local Togakure school of ninja. In the 12th century, a warrior from Nagano fled to Iga after fighting on the losing side of a war between the Minamoto and Taira clans. Iga was the traditional bedrock of the ninja, and the warrior learnt his ninja skills there before coming back to Nagano and starting his own ninja school.
The museum is located in the forested mountains about an hour by bus northwest of Nagano's city center, just across the entrance to the Upper Togakushi Shrine. The museum consists of multiple buildings, one of which exhibits tools and weapons used by Togakure Ninja and displays many interesting photos of them practising various techniques in warfare and infiltration.
The museum also contains a Ninja House, a building which appears just ordinary when looked from outside but is constructed with many secret doors, passages and contraptions on the inside. It is great fun to find the way through the excellently designed maze in the house. There is also a throwing star (shuriken) throwing range, where for a small fee visitors can experience throwing shuriken at target boards.
Within the same compound stands also the Museum of Togakushi Folklore, which showcases tools, clothing, receptacles and furniture used by people who lived in the area in the past.
Access info.
Take bus number 70 or 71 from Nagano Station in direction of Togakushi. Alight at Togakushi-Okushairiguchi bus stop (戸隠奥社入口, 65 minutes, 1350 yen one way, 1 bus/hour), which is located just next to the museum.
In addition, the Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu travel ticket is available for 2600 yen and includes a) a round trip between central Nagano and the Togakushi area, b) free use of buses within Togakushi, and c) one additional bus ride between Nagano Station and Zenkoji. The Togakushi Kogen Free Kippu can be used over a period of up to five consecutive calendar days.

The Japan Ukiyoe Museum (Nihon Ukiyoe Hakubutsukan) exhibits ukiyoe (woodblock prints) from the vast collection of the Sakai family. One of Matsumoto's wealthiest merchants of his time, Sakai Yoshiaki started collecting ukiyoe and other pieces of art dating back to roughly 300 years ago. His descendants have been enlarging the collection to over 100,000 pieces, making it one of the world's largest private art collections.
In contrast with the size of the collection and the museum building, the number of works exhibited in the Japan Ukiyoe Museum is rather small. One reason is because of the fact that the building was originally built only for storage rather than exhibition purposes. Only brief information in English is provided for the exhibits.
Access info.
The Japan Ukiyoe Museum is located about three kilometers outside of Matsumoto's city center, close to Matsumoto Interchange of the Nagano Expressway.
The museum can be reached in a 10 minute taxi ride from Matsumoto Station (about 1500 yen from the station's Alps Exit) or in a 15-20 minute walk from Oniwa Station on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line (5 minutes, 170 yen from Matsumoto Station).

Hours: 10:00 to 17:00 (entry until 16:30)
Closed: Mondays (or following day if Monday is a national holiday), December 28 to January 3

Exploring the Mountains Around Nagano Japan
Exploring the Mountains Around Nagano Japan. So far this trip has been filled with great car content and some fun city life. In this video we jump on a bullet train and head for the hills to explore a different side of Japan. I have always been a sucker for mountains and this place did not disappoint. The beautiful land scape, snow and interesting car spotting made this one of my favorite parts of the trip so far. I hope you all enjoy!

Springtime in Nagano Prefecture HD camera test 長野県の春
This weekend while staying at the family's place in Nagano-ken, I took a walk down to the Tenryu river to test out the video and sound recording capabilities of my new Nikon Coolpix S6600 HD camera while enjoying the beautiful weather. The Tenryu River runs by the family's home and dumps into the Pacific Ocean near Hamamatsu, Shizuoka-ken. The peculiar bird you will hear in this video is called an uguisu, or Japanese bush warbler. It's distinct call really represents a voice of Japan to me, and I always feel happy to hear this bird. It's a very shy bird though, and is rarely seen.
Don't expect much. It's just me farting around with my new camera, testing the wind noise reduction, zoom, close-up, etc. Just watch if you like Japanese countryside.
SUWA Garasu no Sato (Glass Museum), Nagano
Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
Lake Suwa, a beautiful sightseeing spot in Nagano Prefecture. There is “SUWA Garasu no Sato” (Glass Museum) in the immediate vicinity. It is a glass amusement park with a select shop with about 10,000 glass products and a museum. “SUWA Garasu no Sato” has the world’s largest crystal ball and you can experience glass crafts.
There are many works by famous glass craftsmen in the museum, and you can enjoy making glasswork in the hands-on workshop. The shop has the largest scale in Japan for handling glass products, and is lined with a variety of glass products such as accessories, tableware and lamps. You can enjoy shopping just by looking at it.
