Honen Sai Matsuri (Fertility Festival) of Tagata Shrine in Komaki-City, a Shocking but Traditional Fertility Festival
The festival is held every March 15, and in it a phallus, newly carved every year from Japanese cypress and more than 60 cm in diameter and 2 m long, is carried on a portable shrine by parade men of a unlucky age and offered to said shrine with prayers for a good harvest, the flourishing of all natural things and prosperous descendants. The sight of all this has led to the proceedings' becoming widely known as one of the world's strangest festivals, and on the day the temple grounds are filled with visitors from Japan and overseas.
Shinto shrines are found all over Japan and is a symbol of the people’s linkage to their community. Shrines serves as houses for divine spirits as well as places preserving memories and practices of Japanese culture. Based on the discovery in 1935 of an ancient sword and artifacts, Tagata Shrine is Estimated 1,500 years old. Located near the village Ajioka, the name “Agata” is thought to derived from one of the powerful Lords of late Yamato period (3rd-5th CAD) who helped to settle the area after moving here from Nara. Legend has it that his daughter Tamahime, was spoused to a local prince, Takeinadane. It seems that he died an untimely death in war, leaving his wife and two children that develop the surrounding areas, that is the Tagata Shrine.
The phallic theme or representation are objects considered as offerings to deities, as objects of veneration and as a magical fetish. They are loaned to individuals searching for spouses, needing diseases cured, or wishing for a child. When the desired result was produced, the object is then returned to the shrine together with a new phallic symbol as a token of gratitude. They believe that this practice, as well as the Honen-sai Festival, is a survival of ancient and widespread ritual design to ensure agricultural regeneration. One of the most stable features of the history of Tagata Honen-Sai Festival is its goal of plentiful harvest each year.

Weeping Plum Blossoms 2019 #blossoms #flowers #spring2019 #springiscoming #Japan #Nagoya
It's almost time to say goodbye to the weeping plum blossoms here in Nagoya.
In Japanese, they are known as しだれ梅 (shidare ume), and are some of the best looking, best smelling displays of floral beauty you'll ever see.
The plum blossoms start blooming as soon as winter starts giving signs that it may soon be handing the reins over to the next season - Spring.
In some people's opinion, the weeping plum blossoms are more beautiful than the much more well-known cherry blossom, or sakura (which come in late March or early April) in these parts.
Abandoned Japan bamboo shed 放棄された日本の竹の小屋 - Abandoned Japan 日本の廃墟
Old farm shed used to store extra-long lengths of bamboo fallen over and going to ruin beside a rice field in central Japan. Structures like this were once an important part of the economic infrastructure when Japan's primary economic activity was agriculture. Every farmer or small group of farmers would require a shed to hold their farm implements and for temporary storage for freshly harvested fruit and vegetables. In some areas specialized sheds were constructed to act as rest areas where farmers could take a short break from their difficult outdoor labor. Additional sheds were sometimes built for specific purposes such as fumigation, or to even act as growing sheds for shade-loving crops such as delicious shitake mushrooms. Modernization has brought many changes to Japan, not the least of which is the shift of human population and available labor from the rural farming communities to large, cosmopolitan cities such as Osaka, Nagoya and Tokyo. With few young people left to carry on the farming lifestyle many of the farm sheds as well as homes and entire farm compounds have been given up after the older generation retires and there is nobody left to carry on. Sheds such as the building in this video are an example of the crumbling ruin of a once vibrant lifestyle and livelihood.

THE PATH OF WILDNESS
The Path of Wildness is easy to find
The course of a stream
Leaves blown in the wind
A beast's track through the brush
And the direction of our first inclination
The Path of Wildness is an answer and response to a prescribed way of life which may leave some individuals with a sense that their living is little more than a series of pre-determined, step-like episodes between birth and death. The stages of living between these events: childhood, adolescence, adulthood, parenthood and senior are themselves natural and in accord with the needs of the species and most individuals. Many find their satisfaction in living this course and to these individuals I have little or nothing to say. Others though long for something more; something innate, genetic and seemingly calling. Adventure and change can give a degree of satisfaction and relief yet even these may seem too tame. To those who feel drawn to something beyond the entertainment and stimulation of senses I offer a walk along The Path of Wildness. Don't bother penciling the event in your schedule, preparing a pack with goodies and supplies or even inviting a friend along, for this experience is along the course of your first inclination and you must surely always go alone.

The Kakehashi Project is a people-to-people exchange program between Japan and North America. One of the program's main objectives is to promote mutual understanding and friendship between the peoples of Japan and North America.
From December 16th to the 24th I was given the opportunity to attend the Kakehashi Project 2019. About 100 young adult Japanese Americans were chosen to participate in this program coordinated by the JACL and the Japan International Cooperation Center and supported by funding from the Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The participants and I were divided into four subgroups to explore and learn more about Japanese culture from different prefectures. I was placed in group A, where we mainly spent our time in the prefectures Tokyo, Aichi and Fukui.
During the program, we experienced Japanese culture in various ways. This included attending lectures, participating in traditional Japanese activities, consuming common Japanese foods, and exploring popular tourist destinations.
To give some examples, we attended a lecture on the prefecture, Fukui. We learned about Fukui’s scenic natural environment, which includes beautiful beaches, the many different types of craftsmanship like hand-made knives, and its output of high-quality agricultural goods like Ichihomare rice.
We participated in Japanese activities like Za-zen at the Eiheiji Temple in Fukui Prefecture. Zazen is a meditative discipline that is practiced by the Zen Buddhist tradition. What a physically intense, but mentally rewarding experience this was. We also participated in a homestay, which allowed us to experience the daily life of a Japanese family. Shout out to Mr.Watanabe and his wife for being so hospitable. We had the time of our lives with them.
We ate delicious Japanese foods like shabu shabu, crab, bento boxes, sushi, curry, and etc.
We explored popular tourist destinations like the Osu Shopping District in Aichi Prefecture, Shrines throughout Aichi and Fukui, Japanese castles, and many more.
Throughout this program, I was able to learn more about my ethnic background and how I can be a bridge between America and Japan. I created so many unforgettable memories and new friendships that I hope to hold on too. Thank you JACL, JICE, and MOFA for providing us with this unforgettable and unifying experience. I hope to see all my new friends again in the near future.
