Visiting the Okinawan Prefectural Building and Congress and the Okinawan Prefectural Museum.
Today we went down to the Okinawan Prefectural Government building where we got a nice tour of the building and also had a welcome speech by the President of the HUOA (Hawaii United Okinawa Association) and also the lieutenant governor of Okinawa. Then after lunch in the lobby on the first floor, they had a mini-concert and then we went on the bus to go to the Okinawa Prefectural Museum. Later that night I went out with my relatives for dinner.

Shuri-jo (首里城) Castle Park in Naha, Okinawa!
While visiting Naha in Okinawa, I took the opportunity to visit the Shuri-jo (首里城) Castle Park. It is one of those must see things if you visit the island. The castle sits on a hill and has a splendid view of the Pacific ocean. Because of WW2 and the bombardments on Okinawa, every thing was destroyed. What there is today is a reconstruction of the original castle and the adjoining buildings and gates. Arriving from Kyoto one can see that this place is quite different in culture and customs. It's a bit more exotic like for example the Philippines or Indonesia, but with a Japanese flavour. All the tech specs are here and its truly Nippon. Reading about the Ryukyu kingdom, its history and peoples one can visualise how things where some 500 years ago. Shuri castle is staffed by women dressed as court attendants and men dressed as traditional Ryukyu courtiers. The woman dresses are very colourful and if you like there is an opportunity to have your picture taken with them. There is a fee for that though. The park is very spacious and there are many things to see, such as the museum and the Kings throne and quarters.
”Ryukyu Dynasty Parade 2016 Shurijo Castle Festival
Wind of the Ryukyu kingdom era blows. The Royal Procession took place Sunday 10/30/16 along Kokusai Street in Naha. Included is the King of Ryukyu, queen, traditional arts group leads to Chinese emperor mission satsufushi, and historical novel of magnificent Ryukyu by approximately 700 in all is developed. Ryukyuan classical dances, musical drama, ceremonies and a parade filled with pageantry are about to take place at Okinawa’s historic Shuri Castle and on Kokusai Street in downtown Naha City.
The Shuri Castle Festival showcases a 15th century castle that was once home to 19 Ryukyuan kings spanning nearly 500 years of Okinawa history. The Ryukyu Kingdom dates back to the 1600’s, when Sho Hashi skillfully—and peacefully—brought together three Sanzan Kingdoms under his leadership.
After time of approximately 600 years, the Ryukyu kingdom's greatest ceremony revives. Mission dispatched than the Chinese emperor stood in line from angel building of Naha to Shurijo Castle.

A Walk through Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum, Japan
The Basic Concept of the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum
In late March 1945, a fierce battle such as has rarely been seen in history took place on these islands. The Typhoon of Steel that lasted for ninety days disfigured mountains, destroyed much of the cultural legacy, and claimed the precious lives of upward of 200,000 people. The Battle of Okinawa was the only ground fighting fought on Japanese soil and was also the largest-scale campaign of the Asia-Pacific War. Even countless Okinawan civilians were fully mobilized.
A significant aspect of the Battle of Okinawa was the great loss of civilian life. At more than 100,000 civilian losses far outnumbered the military death toll. Some were blown apart by shells, some finding themselves in a hopeless situation were driven to suicide, some died of starvation, some succumbed to malaria, while other fell victim to the retreating Japanese troops. Under the most desperate and unimaginable circumstances, Okinawans directly experienced the absurdity of war and atrocities it inevitably brings about.
This war experience is at the very core of what is popularly called the Okinawan Heart, a resilient yet strong attitude to life that Okinawan people developed as they struggled against the pressures of many years of U. S. military control.
The Okinawan Heart is a human response that respects personal dignity above all else, rejects any acts related to war, and truly cherishes culture, which is a supreme expression of humanity. In order that we may mourn for those who perished during the war, pass on to future generations the historic lessons of the Battle of Okinawa, convey our message to the peoples of the world and thereby established, displaying the whole range of the individual war experiences of the people in this prefecture, the Okinawa Prefectural Peace Memorial Museum.

Shuri Castle Okinawa 2012
After the storm we all made a trip down to Shurijo Castle, which used to be the heart of the Ryuku empire on the Island. It was bombed into oblivion during WWII. This recreation of the castle is only a 10th the size of the original. BUT, this is actually a view from one of the gorgeous lookout points over the island of Okinawa near Naha.
