6.0 Earthquake hits Napa Valley, San Francisco Bay Area (August 24, 2014)
NAPA, Calif. (AP) — The largest earthquake to hit the San Francisco Bay Area in 25 years sent scores of people to hospitals, ignited fires, damaged multiple historic buildings and knocked out power to tens of thousands in California's wine country on Sunday.
The 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck at 3:20 a.m. about 6 miles from the city of Napa ruptured water mains and gas lines, left two adults and a child critically injured, upended bottles and casks at some of Napa Valley's famed wineries and sent residents running out of their homes in the darkness.
At an afternoon press conference, officials at Napa's Queen of the Valley hospital said that 120 individuals had been treated, with six patients injured critically.
Dazed residents too fearful of aftershocks to go back to bed wandered at dawn through Napa's historic downtown, where the quake had shorn a 10-foot chunk of bricks and concrete from the corner of an old county courthouse. Bolder-sized pieces of rubble littered the lawn and street in front of the building and the hole left behind allowed a view of the offices inside.
College student Eduardo Rivera, 20, said the home he shares with six relatives shook so violently that he kept getting knocked back into his bed as he tried to flee.
When I woke up, my mom was screaming, and the sound from the earthquake was greater than my mom's screams, Rivera said.
While inspecting the shattered glass at her husband's storefront office in downtown Napa, Chris Malloy, 45, described calling for her two children in the dark as the quake rumbled under the family's home, throwing heavy pieces of furniture 3 or 4 feet and breaking them.
It was shaking and I was crawling on my hands and knees in the dark, looking for them, she said, wearing flip flops on feet left bloodied from crawling through broken glass.
President Barack Obama was briefed on the earthquake, the White House said. Federal officials also have been in touch with state and local emergency responders. Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for southern Napa County, directing state agencies to respond with equipment and personnel.
Napa Fire Department Operations Chief John Callanan said the city has exhausted its own resources trying to extinguish six fires, some in places with broken water mains; transporting injured residents; searching homes for anyone who might be trapped; and answering calls about gas leaks and downed power lines.
Two of the fires happened at mobile home parks, including one where four homes were destroyed and two others damaged, Callanan said.
The earthquake sent 120 people to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, where officials set up a triage tent to handle the influx. Most had cuts, bumps and bruises received either in the quake, when they tried to flee their homes or while cleaning up, hospital CEO Walt Mickens said. Three people were admitted with broken bones and two for heart attacks.
The child in critical condition was struck by part of a fireplace and had to be airlifted to a specialty hospital for a neurological evaluation, Callanan said.
The earthquake is the largest to shake the Bay Area since the magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta quake in 1989, the USGS said. That temblor struck the area on Oct. 17, 1989, during a World Series game between the San Francisco Giants and the Oakland Athletics, collapsing part of the Bay Bridge roadway and killing more than 60 people, most when an Oakland freeway fell.
Sunday's quake was felt widely throughout the region. People reported feeling it more than 200 miles south of Napa and as far east as the Nevada border. Amtrak suspended its train service through the Bay Area so tracks could be inspected.
Napa City Manager Mike Parness said at an afternoon news conference that 15 to 16 buildings were no longer inhabitable, and there was only limited access to numerous other structures, mostly ones with broken windows. Officials say they are still assessing buildings in the area.
In Napa, at least three historic buildings were damaged, including the county courthouse, and at least two downtown commercial buildings have been severely damaged. A Red Cross evacuation center was set up at a high school, and crews were assessing damage to homes, bridges and roadways.
There's collapses, fires, said Napa Fire Capt. Doug Bridewell, standing in front of large pieces of masonry that broke loose from a turn of the century office building where a fire had just been extinguished. That's the worst shaking I've ever been in.
Bridewell said he had to climb over fallen furniture in his own home to check on his family before reporting to duty.
The shaking emptied cabinets in homes and store shelves, set off car alarms and had residents of neighboring Sonoma County running out of their houses and talking about damage inside their homes.
Napa Valley Earthquake
Residents of Napa Valley's wine region are cleaning up after a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. It was the largest quake to hit the bay area in 25 years. California Governor Jerry Brown has declared a state of emergency in the parts of northern California damaged by the quake. VOA’s Laurel Bowman reports.

BREAKING Mass Shooting Underway Now Targeting VETERANS – HOSTAGES Taken!
BREAKING: Mass Shooting Underway Now Targeting VETERANS – HOSTAGES Taken!
SOURE :
It hasn’t even been a full month since the last mass shooting in America and now another is underway at this very moment. This time, a different but specific target has been identified, as the shooter has intentionally gone after our nation’s heroes at a veteran care facility in California, where most of these former soldiers are helpless. This seems to be no coincidence and now several hostages have been taken as the tense and deadly situation unfolds.
Fox News reports:
An armed man took three hostages during an “active shooter situation” at a California veterans home Friday afternoon, a fire official said, according to the Associated Press.
Earlier, it emerged the veterans home was on lockdown after reports of shots fired.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said officers responded to the Veterans Home of California in Yountville around 10:45 a.m. local time and a shelter-in-place order was issued.Kron4.com reported there were preliminary reports that upwards of 30 shots were fired. Police have not confirmed the report.
“Law enforcement is at the Yountville Veteran’s Home right now following reports of gunfire. The safety of our residents, workers and the community is our top priority,” the veterans home said in a statement on Facebook. “We have activated our emergency response protocol and are cooperating with law enforcement. Further official information will be provided by law enforcement when it is confirmed.”
An official from the veteran’s home told the news station that it was unclear if the shots were fired from inside or outside the building.
The Napa Valley Register reported an armed gunman, dressed in black with body armor, entered the building and may have taken hostages.
There was no immediate information on injuries.
According to California Department of Veterans Affairs, the Veterans Home of California in Yountville dates back to 1884 and is considered the largest veterans home in the U.S. with more than 1000 veterans from all wars dating back to World War II.
Los Angeles Times reported live from the scene earlier:
One of the nation’s largest veterans care facilities in the country was put on lockdown Friday morning after reports of an active-shooter and hostage situation, facility officials said.
“Law enforcement authorities have responded to the Yountville Veterans Home this morning following reports of gunfire near the main dining hall. The facility is on lockdown, and all residents and staff are sheltering in place. We will continue to update you as we get more information,” said state Department of Veterans Affairs spokesman Johsua Kiser in an email.
The 600-acre campus was put into lockdown about 10:40 a.m. and remained that way more than 30 minutes later.
“Everyone is just in alert mode, and we’re taking information as it comes,” Kiser told The Times in a phone interview from his office on the east side of the campus. “Our shades are drawn. Locked the doors.”
An employee who answered the phone said the shooter had taken three hostages but Kiser could not confirm it.
The Napa County Sheriff’s Office told people to avoid the area. The facility is just north of Napa, a destination for wine and tourism.
While little is known about the motive or shooter, the Santa Rosa Press Democrat has reported a somewhat specific description of the assailant:
The Napa Valley Register reported that the police activity concerned a man armed with an automatic weapon, dressed in black, wearing body armor who may have taken three people hostage in Building G.
The report also indicated that while the building itself is on lockdown, “the Sheriff’s Office issued a public notice urging people to avoid the area, off Highway 29 near the Napa Valley Museum and local veterans hospital.”
It will be interesting to see if the same outrage from the left exists in the aftermath of this terrifying incident, considering the difference in who was targeted. Will they use it to scream for gun control demand better protection of some of our most valuable members of society, or does this not fit well within their agenda since it’s veterans who aren’t likely to speak out against gun control after they emerge from this scenario alive.
This attack proves a terrifying fact that nobody is safe in a public place and that the fear of hospitals being the target is now a horrifying reality. They house the most vulnerable victims inside who don’t stand a chance of escape and make an easy target for deranged individuals to enact their sickening plans.
