Banbury By Narrowboat (Part Two) 'Locking Up' the Napton Lock Flight
Sue and I continue our trip to Banbury on the southern section of the Oxford Canal. Setting off from Braunston where we moored overnight, we tackle the Napton flight of 9 locks, which together raise the canal by 49 feet (about 15m). We set off after a wet night with hopes of better weather but are we lucky? Before we reach Napton Bottom Lock, we pass the site of the former brickyard at Napton and see the windmill on the hill. As the canal is quite busy, we get some assistance from other boaters, which helps us on our way, as we move along ‘locking up’. Get a feel for what it’s like to be in a lock. Towards the end of the day we pass a boat in a most unusual position.

Haunted Graveyards : The Grey Ladies of Napton on the Hill
A site survey of the haunted graveyard. St Lawrence Church stands upon a hill at the village of Napton on the Hill, Warwickshire, England. St Lawrence sits on a high elevation - 500ft above sea level. Built in the 1100s, possibly during The Great Anarchy, local legend says the church was originally going to be built at the foot of the hill upon the village green. But stones that were left on the village green mysteriously vanished during the night, only to reappear upon the brow of the hill next morning. The builders took this as an omen and the church was built up on top of the hill.
St Lawrence graveyard is haunted. And it is quite a famous haunting that has reappeared during the flow of the centuries. The graveyard is haunted by the Ghosts of two Elizabethan ladies, possibly sisters, who have been seen several times before. They have been called The Grey Ladies - due to the colour of their Ghosts.
The Grey Ladies are said to appear as wealthy Elizabethan ladies, in silk dresses, and with hair styled to Elizabethan fashions. These Ghosts are harmless. They do not seem to notice the living, and if they do, they make no attempt to communicate. Peaceful, benign
spirits who may have been buried within the graveyard back in the time of Queen Elizabeth I.
It is said they are often witnessed during stormy weather. Given the high elevation of St Lawrence - stormy weather is not uncommon.
