Russian authorities have prevented a Christmas terror attack in the southern region of Kabardino-Balkaria. A car with three suspects exploded during a shootout with police, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported.
The special operation followed a timely tipoff about the terror cell's plans to launch a series of extremist attacks in churches of Kabardino-Balkaria during Christmas service celebrations. A special unit was formed to battle the threat.
When one the members of the Special Forces attempted to stop a truck with three suspects inside near the city of Baksan late on January 6, the passengers opened fire at the police.
In the course of the fire exchange a number of explosives detonated in the car setting it on fire. The three passengers died in the blast.
Police found two pistols, an AK-47 with ammunitions along with explosives. The explosive material was destroyed at the scene while the guns were sent to a forensics expert.
Investigators are still trying to identify the bodies and track down any possible accomplices.
The operation was conducted as part of the government's efforts to battle an extremist insurgency in the republic, the National Anti-Terrorism Committee press service said.

Baksan: truckers against Platon system
On March 27, truckers started their All-Russian protest action, demanding, among other things, to abolish the “Platon” system. They are also unhappy with the increased travel tariff under this system. In February, the government decided to double it from April 15: from 1.53 to 3.06 roubles per one kilometre of travel of a 12-ton truck on federal highways. On March 23, after a meeting with road carrier associations, the Premier Dmitry Medvedev signed a resolution to increase the tariff by 25% – up to 1.91 roubles/km, the Rambler News Service (RNS) reports. Kabardino-Balkarski Nature Reserve (Russian: Кабардино-Балкарский) (also Kabardino-Balkarsky) is a Russian 'zapovednik' (strict ecological reserve) on main ridge of the north Caucasus Mountains. It contains all of the mountains in Europe over 5,000 meters besides Mt. Elbrus and Mt. Kazbek, and contains the most glaciers. The ridge at the reserve forms the famous Bezengi wall consisting of the peaks Gestola (4859 m), Katyntau (4858.8 m), Dzhangi-Tau (5058 m), Eastern Dzhangi-Tau (5033 m) and Shkhara (5068 m). There are 256 glaciers in the reserve's boundaries. The reserve is situated in the Chereksky District of Kabardino-Balkar Republic; it was created in 1976, and covers an area of 82,507 ha (318.56 sq mi).
