The National Museum Rio De Janeiro Brazil Walking Tour Before the Fire (Museo Nacional)
The National Museum Rio De Janeiro Brazil Walking Tour Before the Fire (Museo Nacional). The National Museum (aka Museu Nacional) is the oldest scientific institution of Brazil and one of the largest museums of natural history and anthropology in the Americas. The museum is located inside the Quinta da Boa Vista park, in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and was installed in the Paço de São Cristóvão (Saint Christopher's Palace). We are so privileged to have visited the museum before a catastrophic fire destroyed 90% of the collection on September 2, 2018.
The National Museum held a vast collection with more than 20 million objects, encompassing some of the most important material records regarding natural science and anthropology in Brazil, as well as numerous items that came from other regions of the world and were produced by several cultures and ancient civilizations. Hope you guys enjoy this Walking Tour featuring collections that have now been destroyed... a great loss for humanity.

Fire breaks out at Brazil’s National Museum in Rio de Janeiro
Brazil’s National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, which is one the largest museums of natural history in Latin America, has been destroyed in a massive fire, just months after it marked its 200th anniversary.
The incident began on early Sunday evening when a fire erupted in the three-story building. Video broadcast on Brazilian TV showed that the fire had spread throughout all parts of the building.
It was not immediately known if anyone was injured, but the fire broke out at a time when the museum was closed to the public. There is no word on the cause of the fire.
The National Museum marked its 200th anniversary earlier this year. One of the largest museums of natural history and anthropology in the Americas, it is home to a number of priceless items, including Egyptian artifacts and the oldest human fossil found in Brazil.
The building dates back to 1818 and was used as a palace of the Portuguese Royal Family and later to the Brazilian Imperial Family.
Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, National Museum of Fine Arts 15.4.2018
The National Museum of Fine Arts (locally called Museu Nacional de Belas Artes or MNBA), is located at Avenida Rio Branco in old city center, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is among the chief cultural institutions in the country and is the most important and comprehensive collections of Brazilian fine and decorative art. The MNBA focuses mainly on collection of Brazilian paintings and sculptures of the 1800s and 1900s. The National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro was founded in 1937 and inaugurated in 1938, replacing the old Imperial Academy and Imperial Museum of Fine Arts which moved to the present building in 1904. Since its inception, the Museum’s collection has expanded greatly and now boasts over 20,000 pieces of paintings, sculptures, drawings including Brazilian folk art and African art. In 1973, the French-Renaissance style building of the museum was listed as an official Brazilian National Heritage site.

Brazil’s National Museum tries to recover one year after devastating fire
The massive fire that destroyed Brazil’s National Museum one year ago has been repeatedly called a tragedy that could have been avoided. Housing 20 million artifacts, it was one of the most important natural history and anthropological museums in the Americas.
Years of financial neglect left the building at risk. Although the losses were hard to calculate, a significant number of treasures are being recovered.

Fire at the National Museum of Brazil in Rio de Janeiro - Why We Need to Fund Museums
On September 2, 2018, the National Museum of Brazil was destroyed in a horrible fire. 200 years of scientific research, history and culture were lost. This monumental event was felt all over the world, and it reminded us how important it is to fund cultural institutions. Without proper funding, we can't protect our cultural heritage.
So here is my rant. My plea. Please, fund museums. In any way that you can. FUND MUSEUMS.

National Museum of Rio | Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro #40
The Museu Nacional (National Museum) is the oldest scientific institution in Brazil dedicated to the research and production of knowledge in memory and is linked to the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Its history dates back to the founding of the Royal Museum by D. João VI, in 1818, whose main objective was to spread the knowledge and study of the natural sciences in Brazilian lands. Today, it is recognized as a center of research excellence in natural history and anthropology in Latin America. Holds a collection consisting of more than 20 million items spread over collections that serve as a basis for the research developed by the departments of Anthropology, Botany, Entomology, Geology and Paleontology, Vertebrates and Invertebrates. After a long period of historical erasure, sponsored by the Republic, the memory of the Brazilian monarchy comes back to the scene redefining space, time, objects and memories.
The collections, scientific research and teaching
Much of the collections of the National Museum were gathered during the Regency and Empire, including those from the Museum of the Emperor, located in one of the rooms of the Palace of Boa Vista. D. Pedro II, like the Empress Leopoldina, his mother, had great interest in the collecting and study of natural sciences. Through permanent and temporary exhibitions, about three thousand objects take to the public the result of the knowledge produced by research departments and the work of conservation and restoration. An Institution devoted to education, the National Museum offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses stricto and lato sensu, to which are linked projects, research groups and university extension.
