The Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil
The city of Aparecida do Norte in São Paulo, Brazil, is known for having the most important Marian shrine in the country, where pilgrims from every nation come to visit. In this city, one can find the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, which is the second biggest basilica in the world and which contains an image of Our Lady of Aparecida, the patroness of Brazil. The story behind Our Lady of Aparecida relates that, in 1717, fishermen discovered a headless statue in the Paraiba River. They threw the net into the sea again and this time they brought out the head. This is said to be the statue of the Black Virgin, which is made of terracotta, a type of clay that is baked in a particular kind of oven after being molded. The distinctive characteristic of this style is the form of her smile and the structure of her chin and dimples. She also has flowers in her hair, a hair piece with three pearls, and her head is titled backwards. The statue was believed to have been made by a 17th century Benedictine monk named Frei Agostinho of Jesus. The statue was later restored by experts. She is the patroness of pregnant women and newborn babies, and is also called Our Lady of the Rivers and Seas. The shrine to Our Lady of Aparecida is also a pilgrimage place for workers on the national holiday, which takes place annually on September 7th. Our Lady of Aparecida, Dearest Mother,You who love us and guide us every day,You who are the most beautiful of all mothers,Whom I love with all of my heart,I ask you once again to help me attain the grace that I seek.I know that you will help me And that you will always be with me until the hour of my death.

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis urged Catholics to resist the ephemeral idols of money, power and pleasure in Brazil on Wednesday on his first international trip.
Francis spoke at the first public Mass of his trip in an emotional visit to one of the most important shrines in Latin America.
Thousands packed into the cavernous Basilica of the Shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida, tucked into an agricultural region of verdant fields halfway between Rio and Sao Paulo.
Tens of thousands more braved cold rain outside to catch a glimpse of the first Pope from the Americas returning to a shrine of great meaning to the continent and him personally.
Before the Mass, Francis stood in silent prayer before the 15-inch-tall (38 cm) image of the Virgin of Aparecida, the Black Mary, his eyes tearing up as he breathed heavily.
It was a deeply personal moment for this pontiff, who has entrusted his papacy to the Virgin Mary and, like many Catholics in Latin America, places great importance in Marian devotion.
During his homily, Francis urged Brazilians to keep Christian values of faith, generosity and fraternity, a message he was expected to repeat later in the day during a visit to a drug rehabilitation centre in Rio de Janeiro.

É o terceiro maior templo católico do mundo.

Mark of the faith of the Brazilian people, the Basilica was the guardian of the image of Our Lady of Aparecida found by fishermen.
The history of the Old Basilica, in Aparecida, São Paulo, started when three fishermen from the Vila de Guaratinguetá withdrew from their fishing nets the image of Our Lady of Aparecida.
From there on, several reports of miracles were attributed to the saint, leading to an intense pilgrimage to the local.
In 1745, the image won a chapel that, in 1888, needed to be expanded and became the Main Basilica, currently called the “Old Basilica.”
The village also has grown to become the city of Aparecida, a temple of the Catholic faith dedicated to the patron saint of Brazil.
The Basilica enchants by its Baroque style and its sacred beauty.
Besides enjoying the architecture and the masses, you can visit the viewing spot of the tower.
From the tower that has a 360° view of the city and the Museum, which tells the history of the Basilica and the saint.
In 1955, the image of the saint was transferred to the National Shrine, very near the Old Basilica.
You can go from the Basilica to the Shrine walking down the Passarela da Fé.
n 1955, Benedito Calixto began the construction on the new basilica.
The structure is in the Romanesque Revival style and takes the form of a Greek Cross with arms 188 m (617 ft) in length and 183 m (600 ft) in width.
The dome is 230 ft high and the tower reaches a height of 335 ft.
The basilica contains 190,000 sq ft of space that can accommodate 45,000 worshipers.
During celebrations on the feast day of the patroness, up to 70,000 people can be accommodated in the area outside the basilica.
The grounds contain a shopping mall, medical clinic, restaurants and a 2,930,000 sq ft parking lot that can hold 4,000 buses and 6,000 cars
Pope Benedict 16 visited the Basilica of the Shrine of Aparecida on 12 May 2007, during his Apostolic Journey to Brazil on the occasion of the Fifth General Conference of the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean.
During his visit, the Pope awarded the Shrine a Golden Rose.

Aparecida: a place of history and a path for the future
One week before WYD Rio, Salt and Light's Fr. Thomas Rosica, CSB and Sebastian Gomes traveled to the historic shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida. Here in May 2007, the Bishops of Latin America and the Caribbean, together with Pope Benedict XVI, opened their Fifth General Conference to discuss the future of the Church on the continent. One of the architects of the final document, called the Aparecida Document, was then Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known today as Pope Francis. In this highly important text we see a meeting of the two great minds of Benedict and Francis, and a roadmap for the future of the Church that is now being implemented on the universal level.
