Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Thomas Hardy's Cottage, Dorchester
Hardy's Cottage is a beautiful secluded place to visit if you are following the Thomas Hardy Trail through Dorset. The cottage, just outside Higher Bockhapmton, was built by Hardy's great-grandfather in 1800 and little has been altered externally since then.
It is a popular place for tourists to visit and see where Hardy wrote Under the Greenwood Tree and Far from the Madding Crowd.
The cottage is traditionally built from cob and the thatched roof is a wonderful backdrop to the roses, honeysuckle and japonica that climb the walls. Catch the cottage on a sunny Summers day and you won't find a prettier place in Dorset to spend a couple of hours.
The cottage stands at the top of the hill off Cuckoo Lane in Higher Bockhampton and behind it stretches Egdon Heath, which Hardy wrote of in 'The Return of the Native'. Take your walking shoes and enjoy a walk through the woods and beyond into Puddletown Forest.

Max Gate & Hardy's Cottage Dorset
Max Gate was Thomas Hardy's home for over 40 years from 1885 to his death in 1928. he bought the 1.5 acre site, on the windswept ridge a mile from the centre of Dorchester, from the Duchy of Cornwall.
Hardy's Cottage was the birthplace of novelist and poet Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). He spent his childhood and early years here, returning from periods in London and elswhere to relax in the family home, only leaving it when he married his first wife in 1874. Max Gate and Hardy's Cottage are now owned by the National Trust.

The Birthplace of Thomas Hardy
May I encourage you to visit the birthplace of the much loved author and poet, Thomas Hardy?
It's sometimes asked, What did Thomas Hardy write? It was my delight to discover that Thomas Hardy was not only born here, he lived here long enough to write, Under The Greenwood Tree, and my favourite, Far From The Madding Crowd.
The book's title is liked to have come from Thomas Gray's poem - Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. (1751)
'Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife,
Their sober wishes never learn'd to stray;
Along the cool sequester'd vale of life
They kept the noiseless tenor of their way.'
'Madding' means 'behaving madly' or 'frenzied' - and this cottage, its gardens, and the walk through Thorncombe Wood to the cottage is indeed far from the madding crowd. Interestingly, I chose not to use the audio from the woods, however, because the birdsong was overlaid upon the madding noise of the local roads.

We really enjoyed the Visitor Centre and Café too. There's plenty to do for the whole family. On our visit, the specials on the menu included homemade Smoked Mackerel Pâté, and Smoked Haddock and Cheese Fishcakes. We were very happy with our meal.
I'd give yourself a morning or an afternoon to visit. Nearby is Stinsford Church - St Michael's - strongly associated with the Hardy family - including a dedicated stained glass window, stone carving, and the family graves.
Our habit is to visit Hardy's Cottage first, then have some lunch at the Visitor Centre, and then travel on to St Michael's. We finish up our day at Max Gate where my chief delight is to sit at a desk similar to one Hardy would have written at, look out of the window of his study, and then, inspired, to write a poem.
Watch out for further videos celebrating the Hardy Trail.
