Madeira (Portugal) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Madeira is an island of flowers located amid the Atlantic Ocean, with steep cliffs, green valleys, majestic mountains and world famous wine. Belonging to Portugal, it is located nine hundred kilometres southwest of the European mainland and six hundred kilometres west of North Africa. Funchal is the capital and from the beginning a feudal lord resided in the Palacio De São Lourenço along with the military, and later the governor of the island. In 1493 King Manuel The First founded the cathedral which was the first to be situated beyond the continent of Europe and was designed according to Mudéjar style, the Arab construction method of the Christian Moors. The small fishing village of Camara De Lobos is situated west of Funchal on the south coast and was made famous by Sir Winston Churchill who painted its small harbour. São Vicente looks like something from a picture postcard and wine growers proudly display their traditional homes and well laid out vineyards. The town is particularly well known for its Grutas, Madeira’s only accessible cave system and which indicates its geological past. In the north east is the tourist centre of Santana with its straw-roofed houses, beautiful flowers and streets lined with patterned cobblestones. Amid a fertile terraced landscape is the picturesque centre of Faial and its modest parish church, the destination of a major annual pilgrimage. The village exudes tranquillity and there has been little impact of tourism as both the landscape and the local people have retained their original character. Madeira is like a jewel in the Atlantic, possessing its own rich variety of exceptional, natural landscapes. A wild beauty with many hidden treasures!

Madeira Island Vacation Travel Guide | Expedia
Madeira Island - Caught in the warm trade winds of the North Atlantic, visitors here are spoiled with dramatic cliffs and coastal charm.
When ready, browse vacation packages to Madeira Island:
Pushed up by volcanic forces from the seafloor, #MadeiraIsland is a wonderful #vacation #destination. Volcanic activity settled millennia ago, yet the island’s rich soils and spring climate means Madeira explodes in lush vegetation all year round.
#Visit Madeira’s capital, Funchal. Walk streets paved with patterned stonework and #explore centuries-old churches and homes, which have endured pirate raids, German U-boat attacks, and earthquakes.
Head to Cabo Girão, one of the world’s mightiest cliffs. At Garajau, watch divers far below enjoying the undersea gardens of the marine reserve.
Madeira’s ring road strings together coastal towns and beaches, each one a little different from the last. Madeira’s northern coastline offers plenty of drama and adventure too.
Explore Pico do Arieiro, Madeira’s third-highest peak. From here, experienced hikers can follow knife-edged trails to even higher peaks, the same peaks that guided Portuguese mariners to Madeira six centuries ago.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

BEST OF MADEIRA - 7 days on an amazing island
New to Travelons? Don't forget to subscribe! :-)
This video is a summary of our BEST footage from our trip to Madeira. There are so many things to do on Madeira, but this is what we did during our travel.
We stayed at the amazing hotel Rocamar, east of Funchal (10 min drive). The FIRST day we did some snorkeling outside the hotel. The water was clear, plenty of fish and things to see under water. I even saw an octopus that said hello. See our video just from that experience:
Hotel Rocamar is perfect if you want to stay super close to the sea, with a fantastic view, beautiful sunrises and great service. We even saw dolphins and whales from the balcony of our room!
The SECOND day, we went to hike the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço. Really beautiful with friendly lizards along the way. Remember to bring sunscreen and light clothes - it can be very hot.
The THIRD day we went to Funchal, the capital of Madeira. We bought a combination ticket with the cable cars to the Botanical Garden Jardim Botanico. It costs around €30 per person, so it's quite expensive - but totally worth it. If you suffer from fear of heights, the cable cars can be a bit scary. The botanical garden is massive, with a lot of variation. The cacti were really cool.
Later the same day, we went to Cabo Griao - the highest cliffs in Europe! They have a glas skywalk you can walk out on - awesome! We also went to Ponta do Sol.
The FORTH day we went to the northern parts of Madeira. I did some snorkeling close to Ilheu da Ribeira da Janela - a beautiful cliff in the sea. The waves were quite big, so you should be carful going out here even if you have a lot of experience.
Further west we came to Porto Moniz. They have a really cool area with natural pools. You only pay 1.5€ per person to get in!
The FIFTH day we did some hiking along Levada do Caldeirão Verde (green waterfall). This was amazing! One of the most beautiful and different hikes we've done. It's 6.5km long (13 km back and forth) and the path can be very narrow sometime. Remember to bring a flashlight since there are several pitch black tunnels you have to go though (mind your head). The end of the hike takes you to a magnificent waterfall with crystal clear (but cold) water.
The SIXTH day we wanted to do some more hikning, but the weather was not good at Pico do Arieiro. We wanted to walk from Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. If you want to do the same, check the weather before going! Search for Pico do Arieiro webcam so the the conditions right now ;) We went back to the hotel, to do some more snorkeling and swimming at the hotel pool.
The SEVENTH and last day, I got a surfing lesson from Carlos in Seixal harbor. A black sandy beach with smaller waves - perfect for surf beginners. Even if you don't plan to surf, Seixal is really beautiful and they also have natural pools you can swim in.
We did some other stuff, like the volcanic grotto tour in Sao Vicente (which was great), but we decided to only show the best footage from of our trip to Madeira.
We will come back soon, 7 days is not enough ;) We hope you enjoyed watching our video. Give it a thumbs up, comment and subscribe for more awesome videos!

Madeira: An Introduction to Island Ecology
Madeira is often referred to as the floating garden. The reason for this unusual name, its astonishing floral diversity. Out of the hundreds of species of plant, a high proportion of these are endemic to Madeira.
Endemism is a common pattern shared by oceanic islands around the world. So why is this case? In this episode, David explores the fundamentals of island ecology, in an introduction to the subject.

Madeira (Portugal) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Vacation travel video about destination Madeira in Portugal.
Funchal is the capital of the Atlantic island of Madeira and is situated in a natural, picturesque bay, surrounded by steep mountain slopes. With churches, palaces, mansions, museums and magnificent gardens, it is a city of both character and history. The Museum Of Religious Art is to be found in the former bishop’s palace. The sugar trade with Antwerp meant that paintings and other works of art could be used as payment. Madeira has long been famous for its wine, stored in wooden barrels to mature and then exported all over the world. In the old rooms of a former monastery, it is pressed, matured and celebrated. At the beginning of a valley, São Vicente lies hidden beyond the steep slopes of the northern coastline. The tastefully restored centre of the village contains a seventeenth century church with a Baroque interior. There are gilded carvings, tile pictures and paintings on the altar. At an amazing acute angle, the gondola from the mountain station below the village of Achadas Da Cruz travels three hundred metres down to the coast and back. This most beautiful Baroque church on the north coast was established in São Jorge. Its external simplicity gives little hint of its internal beauty: gilded wood carvings and illusionist paintings adorn the church and its altar. To the east of Madeira is the natural bay of Machico, the oldest settlement on the island. Today, Madeira’s third largest city extends from the coast to the hills of the wide and fertile valley of the Machico River whose inhabitants live from the cultivation of fruit, vineyards and fishing. Its extraordinary landscapes and exotic fragrances have been captivating visitors for centuries. Madeira, wild beauty amid the Atlantic Ocean!

✔ Monte Palace Tropical Garden - Madeira Funchal
montepalace.com
The Monte Palace Tropical Garden occupies an area of 70.000 square meters and houses an huge exotic plant’s collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans and duck’s, that populates the central lake, peacocks and chickens, that walk free in the main areas of the property. In the central lake, the visitor may also admire the beauty and majesty of the swans. They prefer the relatively shallow cool water of lakes and ponds as their natural habitat. Despite of being actually admired in gardens all over the world, the black swans originate from Australia, Tasmania and New Zeeland and the wild white swans have their origin in Iceland and Scandinavia.
The Monte Palace Museum is an ideal exhibition space nestled within the beautiful surroundings of a tropical garden. There are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world.
The exposition entitled 'African Passion' shows part of a collection of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture from the period 1966 to 1969. More than a 1000 sculptures are distributed on two floors of the museum. The top floor concentrates on individual creations, allowing the viewer time to observe the characteristics and workmanship of each artist. The second floor captures the environment in which these talented men and women work in order to create and display their sculptures to the world.
'Mother Nature's Secrets', on the lower floor, proudly exhibits one of the finest private collections of minerals, predominately from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina and North America. From more than a 1000 specimens, around 700 have been specially chosen for display. Some specimens are displayed in hollows designed to imitate the environment in which the minerals form in the depths of our planet, whilst others are “suspended in air” to give the sensation of a planetary space where rocky masses gravitate freely. Also for your enjoyment is an exhibition of more than 300 semiprecious and precious gems, with a particular focus on diamonds, both rough and cut.
One of the most interesting characteristics of the Monte Palace Tropical Garden is the existence of a large collection of tile panels placed along the walkways and amongst the vegetation acquired by José Berardo, under the specialist direction of Manuel Leitão. This collection, considered to be one of the most important in the country after that of the National Tile Museum, is made up of Hispano-Moorish tiles of the 15th and 16th centuries and panels produced in Portugal from the 19th to the 20th centuries.

Madeira Island - Exploring the Northern Coast
Is Portugal on your bucket list? If the answer is yes, then consider Madeira: a Portuguese island-paradise in the middle of the Atlantic. After spending our first 2 days in Funchal - Madeira's capital city in the south - we decided it was time to explore the island. Our day-trip to the northern coast of Madeira was the perfect mix of adventure, relaxation and mouthwatering Portuguese cuisine.
We departed early in the morning from Funchal and within an hour we had crossed the island. For the next several hours, we explored all that northern Madeira has to offer, from the natural saltwater swimming POOLS of Porto Moniz to the underground CAVES of São Vicente to the timeless Taberna da Poncha, where locals gather to relax and sip delicious homemade PONCHA - a Madeiran specialty. We ended our day in the charming fishing village of Câmara de Lobos, home to 2 of the best culinary creations we discovered during our time on Madeira: NIKITA, an adult milkshake that includes beer & wine, and ESPETADA, skewers of meat smothered in garlic and grilled to perfection.
