Hermanus Travel Guide - South Africa Memorable Time
Hermanus Travel Guide - South Africa Memorable Time
Hermanus is situated at South Africa's south coast, near the Garden Route. Hermanus, a picturesque seaside town situated in the Overberg area and on Walker Bay, is a popular holiday village close to Cape Town. Two words come to mind: holiday & Southern Right whale watching.
The town, embraced by majestic mountaintops, is most famous for being the home of the Southern Right Whale. Every year these gentle creatures of the sea migrate along the coast of South Africa with Walker Bay as one of their destinations, to calve and nurture their young.
From the harbour of Hermanus, boat trips depart on a regular basis to see these majestic whales from up-close. One can also stay ashore as Hermanus is the best land based whale watching destination in South Africa, and possibly the world, especially during the Hermanus Whale Festival.
Apart from whale watching, the area of Hermanus boasts some excellent holiday accommodation such as the Misty Waves. Also, plenty of possibilities to spend the day in an active way: hiking, fishing, boating, horse back riding, and more.
Hermanus is around 1.5 hours drive from Cape Town Airport or 2 hours drive from the centre of Cape Town. Follow the N2 eastwards from Cape Town or westwards when coming from George and leave it near Caledon to join the R43. Alternatively, if coming from Cape Town, join the R44 at Somerset West to drive via the beautiful coastal road that takes you through Gordon's Bay, Betty's Bay (stop off at the penguin colony here if you have time) and Kleinmond and links up with the R43. The centre of Hermanus is compact and can be explored on foot from most of the guesthouses.
Hermanus is in the Cape Floristic Region and thus has one of the highest plant diversity levels in the world. The principal vegetation type of this region is Fynbos, a mixture of evergreen shrub-like plants with small firm leaves. In the local Fernkloof Nature Reserve, 1,474 plant species have thus far been collected and identified.
Grotto Beach is the largest beach in Hermanus and has also been proclaimed a Blue Flag beach. Blue flag beaches meet international Environment, Safety and Management criteria. Other beaches with Blue Flag status include Voëlklip, Onrus, Kammabaai, Langbaai, and Hawston.
Hermanus hosts an annual whale festival at the end of September, to celebrate the calving and mating season. Eco-Tourism is the main theme of the Hermanus whale festival with the Eco-Marine Village. Residents and visitors celebrate the migration of Southern Right Whales and other marine wildlife with ocean-themed activities and exhibitions, emphasising education and environmentally responsible adventures and activities. Prior to this main whale festival a Kalfiefees (or Calf Festival) is held, to welcome the first whales (usually in August). Both festivals are characterised by food and craft stalls, environmental presentations and South African drama productions.

Kitesurfing Cape Town, South Africa - Wind | Water | Wild - - Ep. 02: Hermanus
Wind Water Wild is a four part series highlighting kitesurfing in stunning South Africa. From the wild west coast to the southern tip of the continent, we dive into the remarkable yet formidable natural conditions in the Western Cape. Cape Town local Luke McGillewie takes you on an incredible journey in this video series produced by Madic Media. We're searching for the perfect wave where the Pacific and Atlantic ocean meet, experiencing close encounters with wildlife in the heathlands, sending insane airs at Kite Beach (home of the Red Bull King of the Air), and clinking glasses after a day well spent with the local kiteboarding community.
Hermanus is the spot to be for flatwater and freestyle... and when you've got an awesome crew of kiters, you know it's going to be a good time! In this episode of Wind Water Wild, Luke McGillewie takes us to Hermanus for a secret spot mission and a session in 'The Pond'.
Cape Town might be one of the most beautiful cities in the world... definitely one of the windiest. But this season has really been something else. To get a session in, you're going to have to go the distance!
When the wind's not blowing at Cape Town's Kite Beach in Blouberg, it's time to start checking the forecast to see where it's working. A flatwater session at 'The Pond' in Grotto Bay in Hermanus is always a treat, but when the wind is thumping? Everyone and their mom is on the water! We got a tip about a secret spot that was going to work, so it was time to get the local Liquid Force crew together...
After an epic flatwater session with friends and teammates at the secret spot, it was time to crack a couple beers, fire up the braai, and kick back at a holiday home in Hermanus. Nothing beats celebrating a great session with your friends... Except maybe a fun session at Grotto Bay!
With butter flat water in The Pond and waves just across the sand, there's more than a little bit of fun to be had. And with the right crew? It's always a laugh! The sessions with friends are the ones that really stick in the memory books.
After another epic Cape Town kite mission, we're already looking forward to the next adventure. On the next episode of Wind Water Wild, we're off to the West Coast National Park for sessions in the blue lagoon...
