Nebraska City bands showcase talents
Nebraska City bands showcased their talents at The Linemen, 416 Central Ave., on June 2 to benefit the Otoe County Food Pantry, Nebraska City rescue squad, fire department and police.
The bands represent a great portion of Nebraska City¹s home-grown musical talent, said Linemen co-owner Scott Swim. ³They don¹t have delusions of grandeur, but they¹re popular and they are good enough with people that they do have a following,² he said.
The bands raised over $1,200 and collected boxloads of Food Pantry donations.
The bands are Bad Habit and Restless, which have played together in the past.
Bad Habit members are Carey Allgood, lead singer; Brian Booth, drums; Michael Ragland, rhythm; Dale Gray, lead guitar; and Mike Ratcliffe, bass.
Restless members are Donny Behrends, vocalist/keyboards; Duane Behrends, guitar; Bob Barnhart, lead guitar and Brian Larson, drums.

Nebraska Fires 2012 - film by Emily Estes
This is footage of the airplanes dumping fire retardant around a home my Dad, friend, and I sought to help on Monday by cutting and moving trees into the canyon on the back side of this home. You will see the first plane provide a smoke signal for where the second plane should drop the retardant. We had to evacuate the area soon after this was taken as we were no longer in a safe zone. I got word that they were able to save the home, however I have no idea what kind of condition it is in or whether it is still currently safe. The winds have been shifting which has caused more issues on the front. Please pray for these families, volunteers, and communities!! May they find God's healing hand and hope in a moment of despair!
Film taken by Emily Estes from Stuart, NE.

Tornado Causes Damage In Nebraska City
Nebraska City residents say a tornado touched down west of Nebraska City shortly after 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
OPPD power poles were snapped near Highway 75 and H Road. In a northeasterly line, a machine shed was destroyed. About a third of the building was lifted into the air, going above the home of Pat and Don Ramold, and landing in a ditch about a quarter mile away.
On the northwest edge of Nebraska City the properites occupied by Kari
Boardman and Larry Boardman sustained damage.
Larry Boardman said he opened the screen door to see the marble-sized hail, but the wind nearly took the door off. He said he could see leaves and limbs circling around the house and felt the structure shake for less than 30 seconds.[ghsvid]

Mayhew Cabin
A visit to the Mayhew Cabin located in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Underneath the cabin is a recreated “cave” system much like the ones used in the Underground Railroad. Unfortunately it is closed until April but thankfully someone else has done a video of the inside which you can find here Also, here is a great documentary that explains the history
The historic sign reads:
“Mayhew Cabin, 1855”
“This cabin, one of Nebraska’s oldest structures, was built in the summer of 1855 as the home of Allen B. Mayhew, his wife Barbara Ann (Kagy) Mayhew, and their sons, Edward and Henry. John Henry Kagi, Barbara Mayhew’s brother, lived briefly with the Mayhew’s before joining abolitionist John Brown in Kansas.
In February 1859 Kagi helped Brown lead eleven Missouri slaves to freedom in Iowa via Nebraska City. During the trek Kagi narrowly avoided arrest while at the cabin. He was killed in October 1859 during Brown’s raid on the Harpers Ferry, Virginia, arsenal to seize weapons for a slave uprising.
Beginning in the 1870s, stories and recollections about this turbulent era credited the cabin as an Underground Railroad system. Edward Mayhew recalled Kagi once bringing fourteen black persons (possibly escaping slaves) to the cabin for breakfast.
When the cabin was moved several feet in the 1930s due to highway construction, a “cave” allegedly used to hide freedom-seeking slaves, was recreated nearby. Legends connecting John Brown to the Mayhew cabin made it a popular tourist attraction devoted to the antislavery cause.”
