The Nelson Electric Tramway
Complete Loop from Lakeside Rotary Park to Baker Street and back (July 2019)
The Nelson Electric Tramway is a heritage railway in Nelson, British Columbia, Canada. It uses two restored vintage streetcars (car 23 and car 400) which carry tourists along Nelson's waterfront and was the first operating heritage streetcar line in British Columbia. The service is seasonal, starting on the Easter weekend and ending on the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend each year. It is operated by the non-profit Nelson Electric Tramway Society (NETS). The line was opened on June 15, 1992.
Nelson's original streetcar system operated from 1899 to 1949. It was run by the privately owned Nelson Electric Tramway Ltd. from 1899 until 1908 and then, following a suspension of service when a fire destroyed a substation, was restored to operation in 1910 by a newly formed Nelson Street Railway Company and, in turn, became municipally owned in 1914. The heritage streetcar line adopted the name of the town's first streetcar company.

All Aboard Nelson B.C.'s Historic Streetcar #23
Nelson's Streetcar #23 is operated by the Nelson Electric Tramway Society. On this video trip aboard Streetcar #23 we meet conductors Lloyd and Jim, two of Nelson's many unique Kootenay Karacters.
Situated along the lakefront, in beautiful, Nelson, BC lies a historical marvel. Streetcar #23 is a fully functional streetcar that was once in use here in Nelson in the first half of the 20th century. Once the backup streetcar for the defunct Nelson Street Railway, it has had a colourful history.
The Nelson Electric Tramway Society, along with The Chamber of Commerce, Royal Bank, and Selkirk College restored this Streetcar, and the Society provides a scenic ride along Nelson's waterfront. The society is all volunteer driven, and our streetcar is one of Nelson's most interesting attractions.
Streetcar No 23 was built in 1906 by the Stephenson Car Company, a division of the J. G. Brill Company of Elizabeth, New Jersey, U.S.A. It was the fourth in a series of 25 cars ordered for the '3-cent' Forest City Line of Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. It was built as a double-ended, semi-convertible car and was numbered '3334′. In 1908, it was re-built as a single-ended car and re-numbered '934′. Read more at

History
Streetcar #23 was originally purchased in 1925 from Cleveland, Ohio, where it had operated for 14 years. The car operated in Nelson from 1925 to 1949, when Nelson Transit purchased replacement diesel buses. From 1949 to the 1980s the streetcar was used as a cabin, dog kennel and souvenir shop. The Nelson Electric Tramway Society was formed in 1988 and the vision of getting Streetcar #23 back on track started to become a reality. A 1.2-kilometre route was constructed from the City wharf area to Lakeside Park, and on July 1, 1992, Streetcar #23 made its first run since 1949. Streetcar #23 still runs to this day, thanks to the dedicated volunteers of the Nelson Electric Tramway Society.

A Visit to Nelson (ca. 1939) - RBCM AAAA1072
Nelson and area, just before the Second World War. This edited clip begins with high-angle views of the city and its setting, followed by street-level shots of some local businesses. These include: Palm Dairies Ltd.; a building housing a Shell station and Nelson Transfer Co. Ltd.; West Transfer Co., with a moving van and movers at work in a residential area; Kootenay Motors (H. Harrop), another Shell station, beside the Greyhound Bus terminal; the Madden Hotel (and a streetcar); and another downtown hotel. The clips ends with shots of the Harrop cable ferry, and a scenic shot of a wharf with boats. These are edited excerpts from silent 16 mm film footage shot by Vancouver filmmaker Alfred E. Booth (1892-1977). In the 1930s and 1940s, Booth travelled extensively in the BC Interior, shooting footage of the various regions and communities for his own company, Travel Films. The source film is the compilation reel [Kootenay-Boundary area] : [footage and out-takes] (AAAA1072), one of 39 film reels in the Alfred E. Booth fonds at the BC Archives. Used by permission.

Nelson Electric Tramway Society - Streetcar #23
This is a round-trip ride on board Nelson's 1906-built John Stephenson Company Streetcar. The streetcar was built for Cleveland, Ohio and was sold to Nelson, British Columbia in 1923. Inside it still carries the Cleveland fleet number 3334. The car spent some time off the rails after closure of the line in 1949. In 1951 it was sold, serving as a dog kennel and then a chicken coop until 1982. Since then it has been professionally restored, and can be found operating almost every day on the track in Nelson between Easter and Thanksgiving (March/April and October).
