Japan 2019 Day 2: Kyoto
Our first full day in Japan was spent in Kyoto!
We woke up early (thanks Jetlag) and went to FamilyMart for breakfast before heading up to Arashiyama. We spent some time in the bamboo forest and went to Otagi Nenbutsu-ji Temple where there are some really cool stone carvings.
The rest of our day was spent visiting the Golden Temple (Kinkaku-ji), Kiyomizu-dera and the Higashiyama District. We finished our evening with a show at Gion Corner and some much needed sustenance in the form of Kobe beef!

DYA717 Arima Onsen, Japan June 9, 2015
Da noive! Someone in da peanut gallery asked if all what I’m writing is a figment of my imagination and not real! Eh, I not like some of my other friends who constantly make up stories. All what I write is something that is/was happening to me on this trip. So there! Pay attention. I don’t have a growing woody nose like Pinocchio and Dr. O! kekekekeke
Yesterday, I re-visited a few of the Taiko Hideyoshi places. There are plenty more places in connection with him which I leave to you folks to explore later. These spots are Zenpukuji Temple, Negai-zaka, Nenbutsuji Temple, Hideyoshi’s Bath Museum, Zuihoji Park and Mt. Haigata.
This is moving house day. I wanted to try another ryokan in Arima Onsen. After breakfast, I decided to go exploring again, i.e., getting lost. So I checked out, left my junks at the front desk and told them I going BURA-BURA for a bit and claim my junks later. I “explored” the neighborhood and ended up at ZUIHOJI PARK. It was a hilly climb. The park is a small one. The only thing worth visiting is the rock “GO” table which Taiko Hideyoshi allegedly played GO on long ago. The park is small so I went zip-zip through it and then picked up my stuff at the hotel and went HE-LE on to my next place. I got to the Gyoen Hotel but they told me check-in is at 2:30 p.m. so I left my junks and went BURA-BURA some more. Walked around town central and stopped for refreshments (beers) at several places and it was lunch time. I just walked into a place which specializes in Salibury steaks. I forgot this was really hamburger but eh, I was a good boy and ate lots of vegetarian junks so I can have one hamburger steak right? Hey, the steak was ONO! There were 2 seasonings that were not recommended for kids so I asked the waitress why? She said was “KA-RA-I”, i.e., spicy hot! So I said give me the least hot one and that one was black pepper spicy and ONO!
Walked around some more and finally got bored and tired so I went to the tourist information office and asked if they had public onsen furo baths. She recommended the Gyoen but I told her that’s where I’m waiting to check in so she told me about one just one block away called Goshobo Hotel. I paid 2000-yen to use their furo. They have a neat set-up and if any of you thinking of coming to Arima Onsen, try look staying at Goshobo Hotel. It is just a block away from the Nene statue. They had 2 types of baths, the clear one and the muddy iron-mineral one. What’s interesting is that all the baths have windows facing outdoors. You can see the hotel windows and that means the guest at the hotel can see you too yeh? Not really, since inside is a little dark – you can see out but I think looking in from outside is harder. The rusty brown pool is divided by a little rocky partition just below my head. So the clerk told me to watch out because you can peer over and see the ladies in the rust pool and they can do the same. So, I went soak in the rusty pool and went peer over and I never see anything. It seems I was the only one at that time soaking in the men or the women side. Shucks! So I went back to the clear pool which was out of the way and also lonesome!
At 2:30 p.m. I got to check into my room. Wow, was I surprised. I got a big room, it has its own patio on the 7th floor with an outdoor mini-roten-buro or a mini outdoor hottub. The regular onsen furo is also on the 7th floor so I told the lady, I going to the regular onsen because I don’t want to waste water on my own mini-furo. WI-FI is available in the lobby of the 1st floor and 7th floor so I scored again as, while I can’t do WI-FI in my room, I just gotta go to the 7th floor common area which is just a few steps away from my front door.
Went out for dinner. Walked in this place and asked if they had food (I thought was one restaurant). They served only beer, at least that is what I think I heard them say. I noticed coupla birds flitting in and out and then saw one nest with chicks on top of a light fixture in this place. The lady didn’t know the English word for the bird so she took out her cell phone and brought up swallow. I tried to take pictures of the swallows feeding but they didn’t come out too good. Went to another place and finally found something to eat. I ended up eating Osaka style okonomiyake.

Kyoto, Temples and more! Special thanks to GT41 :)
Kyoto (京都市 Kyōto-shi?, pronounced [kʲoːꜜto.ɕi] ( listen); UK /kɪˈoʊtoʊ/, US /kiˈoʊ-/, or /ˈkjoʊ-/[1]) is a city located in the central part of the island of Honshu, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the Imperial capital of Japan for more than one thousand years, it is now the capital city of Kyoto Prefecture located in the Kansai region, as well as a major part of the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe metropolitan area. Kyoto is also known as the City of Ten Thousand Shrines.
Although archaeological evidence suggests human settlement in Kyoto began as early as the Paleolithic period,[3] relatively little is known about human activity in the area before the 6th century AD, around which time the Shimogamo Shrine is believed to have been established.
Sokujoin Temple Founded in 992!
The origin of this temple is believed to date back to 992 when the noted priest Eshin of Enryakuji Temple (Mt. Hiei) built Komyoin temple in Fushimi in the south of Kyoto. During the second half of the 11th century, Toshitsuna Tachibana, son of Yorimichi Fujiwara, the highest ranked aristocrat in the imperial court of that time, moved the original temple into his villa, and later changed the villa itself into a temple
In 1594, the ruler Hideyoshi Toyotomi, not he occasion of building of his Fushimi castle, forced the relocation of this temple to the other place. During the Meiji era (1868-1912) the temple was again moved and restored to the present site as Sokujo-in, within the precincts of Sennyuji Temple.
In the main hall a statue of Amida Buddha as well as 25 statues of Bosatsu (Buddha on the path to enlightenment) are arrayed. These works were almost created in the late 11th century and are all designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.
Yoichi Nasu, a hero in one of the most famous episodes of the battles between the Heike and Genji clans during the late 12th century, came here as a young man and prayed to Amida Buddha for recovery when he fell ill. After praying here, he had great success in battle as a master archer, and is said to have spent the later years of his life in this temple, where a stone tower exists to mark his grave.
