Surfing Christchurch NZ - Saturday 16th Jan 2010 - Sumner Bar, New Brighton, New Zealand
Recorded this with my Panasonic Lumix FT1 on Saturday 16th January 2010 (on full zoom) at around 7pm. Just something I put together for a bit of fun to show that Christchurch does 'occasionally' get some decent waves :-)
Nice Easterly groundswell with around 2-3ft at Sumner and the occasional 4ft+ set at New Brighton.

Baby seal visits New Brighton beach, Christchurch, NZ
This young seal spent a couple of hours sunbathing on the beach and was most reluctant to return to the sea. Before I came across it, wildlife staff had apparently checked it and decided it was OK. They then left it there, despite the obvious danger from the many dogs which owners allow to run freely on the beach. The nearest seal colony is some distance away, and this young animal had clearly strayed far from home. I am quite doubtful about its chances of finding its way back.

New Brighton is a coastal suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, about 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) to the east of the city center. In the 2013 census, New Brighton had a population of 2,442. At the heart of the suburb is the New Brighton mall, which once was the suburb's primary shopping and entertainment precinct. After the Christchurch earthquakes, this area was significantly damaged.
New Brighton is one of Eastern Christchurch's main entertainment and tourist centers with its architecturally unique pier and its scenic coastline being the suburbs best known features.

Christchurch is Awesome - Beached as bro
Christchurch is home to many different beaches and all within an short drive from the CBD. New Brighton Pier is a great place for fishing or watching the surfers. Sumner is a great beach for swimming, with ice-cream shops, cafes and restaurants close to the beach and Taylors Mistake is very popular with surfers and is a departure point for walks and mountain-bike trails to Godley Head
