Bishops Gate; The City Gate from the Walled City in Derry
Bishops gate in Derry/Londonderry is one of four original gates into the walled city. Today we would list 6 in total, which include - Butcher Gate, Bishop Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Castle Gate, New Gate and The Magazine Gate.
Bishop's Gate was replaced by the present structure in 1789 - which was to mark the first centenary of the closing of the gates by The Apprentice Boys of Derry.
You will see this on any tour of the walls of derry - hence why it is often referred to as the walled city. Derry would also be called the maiden city of Northern Ireland or Northern Ireland's second largest city and the 4th largest in Ireland.
The history that is carried behind these gates found in Derry/Londonderry make the need to see them in real more powerful and it usually astonishes people once they come to the location and stand in front of any of these gates and take in all the history standing in front of them and the beauty they tend to carry as well.
The gate which we visited this time in Derry/Londonderry was Bishops Gate and this present gate was built at the suggestion of Bishop Hervey in 1789 to celebrate the centenary of the siege. The head in the gate that is facing Bishop Street represents the River Boyne crowned by a laurel wreath and the date refers to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, while the head that is facing outwards is the River Foyle and the date 1689 and the ship breaking the boom recall the relief of the 1689 siege.
Some of the names which are usually given to specific cities and towns tend to refer to a specific story that is carried behind and when it comes to referring to Derry/Londonderry as the Walled City then it is important for people to know about the walls of Derry which are surrounding a specific area there and which then have those different gates which we are talking about and which Bishops Gate is one of them.
Derry/Londonderry is the second largest city in Northern Ireland and these two different names and the fourth largest city in the island of Ireland, bringing to it lots of tourists to come and check what this big city has to offer them. The name Derry came from the old prefix Doire which means oak grove and this was actually the name mostly used until in 1613 when the city was granted the Royal Charter by King James I and gained the London prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds, and that is the reason why you will find some people referring to it as Derry and other calling it Londonderry (
This old Walled City as it is referred to, lies at River Foyle which is spanned by two bridges with the Peace Bridge being the latest one to be built there ( that connect Ebrington Square to the rest of the city centre. The views which one get to see in Derry-Londonderry especially for those by the river that are found there, always make this city different along with the history that it has to offer.
The Bishops Gate and even the rest of those gates found in the city are all from the different touristic attractions that people have to visit when they are staying at Derry. Among those which will stand on the top of our list, we will suggest visiting Austins which was a department store in the Diamond Area of Derry that was established back in 1830 and which is now standing as the world's oldest department store to be ever built. There is also the Guildhall building in Londonderry and the square in front of it where lots of events tend to take place ( Adding to these different suggestions which we have, there is also the famous St. Columb's Cathedral and St. Columb's Park that is also found there ( and the Bishop Street Courthouse.
These are considered the highlights of Derry-Londonderry or which is also known as the Walled City or the Maiden City. Bishops Gate might be from the most important of these attractions because it tells the story of giving this city the name of the Walled City and thus give people the chance to understand the place they are visiting and the things they are going to see there.
Bishops Gate is one of the four gates which are found in the city, so if you are going to visit Derry-Londonderry soon and you are thinking about those places which you are supposed to see in this second largest city of Northern Ireland then checking this gate should be a must along with those other attractions which we have suggested.
It is also a great idea to pass by the rest of those gates if you have the time and if your plan will not be ruined. These will tell much about the city and will bring you through different historical places that you are going to enjoy in this beautiful and old city in Northern Ireland.

Derry Londonderry-An Amazing View of the Maiden City-Everyone should visit Derry and walk the walls.
Check out Derry now in this short video, see what Derry daily life is like. Derry is the 2nd city of Northern Ireland, it is situated in the UK, but on the Island of Ireland. It is often called the Maiden City or the Walled City in Northern Ireland.
Sometimes it is referred to as Derry and in other cases it is called Londonderry and this has been the subject of a name dispute between Irish nationalists and unionists; nationalists are the ones to call it Derry while unionists are those who refer to it as Londonderry. When it comes to the legal side, it is known as Londonderry.
It is not about the name of the city but it is about the things to do there and the places to visit in it. Our journey in this beautiful city started with Londonderry Courthouse which is one of the old buildings that are found in the city and which you will at some point pass by.
Austins was the second place to pass by in Derry/Londonderry. Austins is the world's oldest independent department store that was established back in 1830 by Thomas Austin and it has been working since that time until today. It is not just for the sake of shopping, but this old building is another reason why one will come to it and know more about the history of its foundation.
Among the other touristic attractions of this city in Northern Ireland, we came to the Bishop's Gate which was built at the suggestion of Bishop Hervey in 1789 to celebrate the centenary of the siege. Bishop's Gate will take you to Bishop's street and there you could have a stroll down doing nothing specific (
Among the list of places which we visited in Londonderry, we have been to The Craft Village. The Craft Village is the reconstruction of an 18th century street and 19th century square that provide an eclectic mix of artisan craft shops, balconied apartments and different restaurants and coffee shops which one could sit it and enjoy their time. We have walked across this village and loved every detail related to it and we would suggest it for those who will be visiting Derry anytime soon and there you will also find souvenir gifts to take back home to your friends and family.
Moving forward with our trip, we visited the Guildhall and Square which is another touristic attraction for people to visit while being in Derry. The Guildhall in Derry is an old building that is standing there from 1890 and it is the building in which the elected members of Derry and Strabane District Council meet. The old 17th century Guildhall was first located in the Diamond area of the Walled City but this building was then destroyed by fire and the new building was assigned to be built in a city square. In addition to the social and political meetings which are held in the Guildhall, this is also the place where the Feis Doire Colmcille - an event which celebrates Irish culture - is held. Guildhall Square which is just in front of the building is the main city square in Derry - Londonderry and is also the place where different important and beneficial events are usually held (
One of the other things that people tend to check while they are in Derry/Londonderry is the Peace Bridge. Peace Bridge was opened back in 2011 by Johannes Hahn and it is both a cycle and foot bridge that crosses over River Foyle. The aim of the bridge was to connect Ebrington Square to the rest of the city centre, and that what happened eventually with this bridge that is one of the newest three to be found in Derry (
The last stop in this video around the city of Derry in Northern Ireland is Shipquay Gate which is one of the original four city gates dating back from 1805. It is interesting to come across those different old gates which stand from the history until today but which will bring you to the modern world that you are living in - they give the city a different kind of atmosphere.
These are the places we passed by in Derry/Londonderry, but if you are searching for something more then you could check the rest of the gates found there and you could also consider visiting St. Columb's Park which is one of the most famous to be found in Derry/ Londonderry (
Back in 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the London prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds and from that time the legal name has been Londonderry although some people refer to it as Derry.
Derry tourism is growing in recent years - and there is plenty now to do in Derry on a night out. The city itself is a great walk with many historic points especially the walls that surround the city. Doire as it is called in Gaelic - is well worth a visit by any tourist

Derry, also known as Londonderry, is a city on the River Foyle in Northern Ireland. It’s known for the intact 17th-century Derry’s Walls with 7 gates. Within the walls, spired St. Columb’s Cathedral displays artefacts from the 1688–9 Siege of Derry. Near the Peace Bridge, the Tower Museum has city views and historical exhibits. Huge stained-glass windows adorn the neo-Gothic red sandstone Guildhall.
Derry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire) meaning oak grove. In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the London prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.
The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). The district administered by Derry City and Strabane District Council contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.
Derry is close to the border with County Donegal, with which it has had a close link for many centuries. The person traditionally seen as the founder of the original Derry is Saint Colmcille, a holy man from Tír Chonaill, the old name for almost all of modern County Donegal, of which the west bank of the Foyle was a part before 1610. In 2013, Derry was the inaugural UK City of Culture, having been awarded the title in 2010.

Bishops Gate Hotel - A Derry Landmark Reborn
Terrifying new footage emerges of 1996 Manchester IRA bomb - Daily Mail
Windows shattered and shards of debris flew through the air as the blast tore through office buildings and shops within a half-mile radius in Manchester city centre on June 15, 1996 (left). Minutes earlier two police officers are seen directing people away from the vehicle (inset), which was packed with 1.5kg of explosives, and a bomb squad called in. A robot approaches the lorry but efforts to diffuse the bomb prove in vain as time runs out (middle). Nobody was killed but 212 people were injured and £700million in damage caused (right) after the explosive device was detonated close to Marks & Spencer and the Arndale shopping centre.

Derry, Northern Ireland - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Derry
Top best places to visit in Derry, Northern Ireland
Derry or, more officially, Londonderry is the second largest city of Northern Ireland.
The city is also nicknamed the Maiden City by virtue of the fact that its walls were never breached despite being besieged on three separate occasions.
Derry is the only remaining walled city in Ireland that is completely intact and it is one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe.
There are many historical buildings that can be visited when walking down the City Walls.
St Columb’s Cathedral is the mother church of the Ireland Diocese of Derry.
Situated along the City Walls, First Derry Presbyterian Church has recently been re-opened and is now used as a place of worship.
Another admirable church of great importance is the neo-Gothic St Augustine’s Church.
Located within the historic walls Tower Museum, the main museum of the city, tells the story of the city from prehistory to the present.
Right in the center of Derry is a monument dedicated to the citizens who lost their lives during World War I, the Diamond War Memorial.
In the Bogside neighborhood is a historical landmark, a free-standing gable wall, that commemorates Free Derry.
In the same area of the Free Derry Museum is the Bloody Sunday Memorial.
But the Bogside is best known for its large political murals found on the walls of Free Derry Corner.
A more contemporary sculpture in the city, known as Hands Across the Divide, serves as a symbol of the two communities coming together.
Outside of the city walls are many important landmarks worth visiting, such as:
St Eugene’s Cathedral, where there is the Roman Catholic minster.
St Columba’s Church Long Tower, the Roman Catholic Church with the beautiful altar.
And the Guildhall, a large hall where many social and political events have been held.
The Guildhall is located between City Walls and the River Foyle.

N. IRELAND: LONDONDERRY: PROTESTANT APPRENTICE BOYS MARCH
Natural Sound
A potentially volatile parade in Northern Ireland has taken place without major incident.
The march by the Protestant Apprentice Boys through Londonderry is the last major event in the Northern Ireland marching season - which earlier this summer saw the deaths of three young Catholics brothers in an arson attack on their home in Ballymoney.
However , there were minor scuffles and angry words in Londonderry.
But the march was more peaceful than in recent years following a deal between the marchers and Catholic residents limiting the parade to just one band.
To the beat of a lone bass drum, about 400 Protestants marched peacefully on Saturday atop Londonderry's medieval walls.
A compromise brokered with Catholics ensured no major confrontations.
Apprentice Boys leaders and Catholic protesters from the city's Bogside district agreed that the march could continue atop the walls as usual, but no bands from outside Londonderry were allowed to circle the Diamond.
Last year Protestants rioted with police in the Diamond, the central square inside the walled town, as the march concluded.
The mood across Northern Ireland shifted from confrontation to compromise in July after a stalemate over another blocked Protestant march led to three young Catholic boys being burned to death by arsonists.
Few Catholics were around Saturday as the Protestants, many in their traditional uniform of crimson vestments, suit and bowler hat, stepped off along the stretch of wall overlooking the Bogside amid mist and drizzling rain.
A handful of Bogside Catholic boys cheered derisively at police and marchers, but no Protestant marchers broke ranks and adult Catholic onlookers remained silent.
Former Hong Kong governor Chris Patten, the chairman of Northern Ireland's new
Policing Commission, looked on as an Apprentice Boys' parade passed by.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I think it happened while everyone was sitting down and taking a step back from the situation, and realizing for the good and for the betterment of the city it was important that an understanding be reached and we were saying continually for quite a while this is what we want to do and we were convinced that 80 percent of the people, especially the nationalist people in this city, did support the right of the Apprentice Boys to hold their celebrations.
SUPER CAPTION: William Hay, Apprentice Boys spokesman
Sinn Fein representative Dodie McGuinness said she wished a similar approach could have been adopted prior to Drumcree.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Derry has agreed with the accommodation here today and has looked at a march that will hopefully go off peacefully, had we agreed to the same sort of agreement on Garvaghy Road with the Drumcree situation we might not have had two weeks of a standoff.
SUPER CAPTION: Dodie McGuinness
Thirteen senior Apprentice Boys - each representing the original 13 apprentice workers who bolted the city's gates against the forces of Catholic King James II some 310 years ago - planned to lay more memorial wreaths in the Diamond on Saturday afternoon.

'Boys Day Out 5.' Walking Most of Derry's Walls
Us three old Belfast boys are on a Belfast train day trip, free bus/rail pass, day to the Maiden City of Derry/Londonderry. Here we walk Derry's Wall from Shipquay Gate to St Columb's Cathedral. I intend to return soon and do the complete the walk. ( I rather slipped up here, -sorry. )
Derry (/ˈdɛri/, officially Londonderry (/ˈlʌndənˌdɛri/), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland.
Derry is the only remaining completely intact walled city in Ireland and one of the finest examples of a walled city in Europe. The walls constitute the largest monument in State care in Northern Ireland and, as the last walled city to be built in Europe, stands as the most complete and spectacular.
The Walls were built in 1613–1619 by The Honourable The Irish Society as defences for early 17th century settlers from England and Scotland. The Walls, which are approximately 1 mile (1.6 km) in circumference and which vary in height and width between 3.7 and 10.7 metres (12 and 35 feet), are completely intact and form a walkway around the inner city. They provide a unique promenade to view the layout of the original town which still preserves its Renaissance style street plan. The four original gates to the Walled City are Bishop's Gate, Ferryquay Gate, Butcher Gate and Shipquay Gate. Three further gates were added later, Magazine Gate, Castle Gate and New Gate, making seven gates in total. Historic buildings within the walls include the 1633 Gothic cathedral of St Columb, the Apprentice Boys Memorial Hall and the courthouse.
It is one of the few cities in Europe that never saw its fortifications breached, withstanding several sieges including one in 1689 which lasted 105 days, hence the city's nickname, 'The Maiden City.'
