Sarehole Mill, Birmingham
This is a short video about Sarehole Mill in Hall Green, Birmingham. It's one of only two remaining watermills in Birmimgham. JRR Tolkien lived across the road from the mill as a small child and the watermill and it's surrounding inspired Hobbiton and The Shire (the mill itself and the miller are mentioned in the books too). Recently restored, the mill is grinding flour for the first time in a century. The mill is open Tues-Sun, 12-4pm from Easter to November 3rd, 2013. Visitors can watch the mill grinding grain on Wednesdays and Sundays.

Help us get Sarehole Mill milling again!
2019 marks 50 years since Sarehole Mill became a museum and we have big plans for the mill this year! We have launched an appeal to restore Sarehole Mill to full working order! We are aiming to raise £6,500 to enable us to begin milling again. Go to to find out more and donate!
Last year the mill sadly suffered badly because of flooding. Amongst other things the flood caused damage to the water wheel housing which means that unfortunately Sarehole Mill is no longer a working water mill.
We hope to restore our 18th century bake-house to working order so that we can bake fresh bread onsite. Not only will this help us to bring history to life for our visitors, but we will also be able to sell bread to the local community, which will help us sustain the museum.

New Hall hotel - doesnt get much better than this.
Maybe some hotel guests like significant levels of noise as they rest (maybe you are staying at the M4 Heston services Travelodge) however for those of us that don't, maybe consider the New Hall Hotel and Spa in Sutton Coldfield? Lovely old building and grounds. Once with a really good reputation.
Despite having visited before and having friends previously work there, it seems all is now not well.
Before checking in I chatted through the room options with reception and viewed 4 rooms. They were friendly and helpful. I selected and booked in for 1 night though was planning 2 nights. The ladies agreed check out at 12 lunchtime.
Oh dear, and now the problems. After going out for dinner with friends I returned with a friend for a drink in the bar. Everything was closed and locked up. Including the main entrance. at least 15 rings on the front door bell brought the self identified night manager out of the room next to the front door. Sleeping or watching TV right beside us?
Any how, this video records the noise of building works from 0800 in the morning, bear in mind that standard check out isn't until 11am so this is the standard of care paid to customers.
After speaking to the hotel deputy Manager Scott and the head office complaints manager no one has seen fit to come back to me yet to offer acceptable explanation despite that being a promise.
And calling in today to talk to the 'representative' of the board the best response I had was 'I am not prepared to talk about that'.
I was told that these works were scheduled so at least no one can now protest they were due to any form of emergency!
Good on you Hand Picked Hotels.
So now it needs to be public. Presume this wont make any difference to them at all. Shame really, as a former Small Luxury Hotel of the World they really are driving things downhill...
Thought the CEOs online blog would want you to think differently....
