Christchurch's oldest and greatest Flashmob, April 2014: 61 Residents from three Christchurch's Anthony Wilding, Ngaio Marsh and Diana Isaac Ryman Healthcare retirement villages trained hard for six weeks to create this routine to surprise lunchtime shoppers at The Palms Mall. The combined age of the group was 4803 years old, the average age was 79 and the oldest dancer was 92 years young.

80-odd years of happy

Sixty residents and staff at the Diana Isaac Retirement Village in Christchurch combined all their considerable talents to come up with this tribute, 80-odd years of happy. The residents wanted to show their children and grandchildren just what they're made of!

Thriving through placemaking - Christchurch Conversations - Ethan Kent

In this Christchurch Conversation, Ethan Kent expands our understanding of placemaking as a transformative way of improving cities. His talk is followed by a panel discussion with Ethan Kent in conversation with local and national placemakers, including Frith Walker (Panuku), Ryan Reynolds (Gap Filler), Debbie Tikao (Matapopore) and Patrick Fontein (Studio D4).

Ethan Kent is the Senior Vice President of Project for Public Spaces (New York). In his presentation, Ethan argues that placemaking builds the shared value, community capacity, and cross-sector collaboration that is the bedrock of resilient cities and thriving communities.

Christchurch Conversations He Whakawhiti Kōrero is a series of free talks where experts share ideas to inform Christchurch’s future. The Christchurch Conversations programme is presented by Christchurch City Council in partnership with Te Pūtahi – Christchurch centre for architecture and city-making. A Conversation with Ethan Kent was presented in association with Panuku Development Auckland with support from Resene. We would like to also thank Ōtākaro Ltd for partnering to support Ethan’s visit to Christchurch.

Christchurch (; Māori: Ōtautahi) is the largest city in the South Island of New Zealand and the seat of the Canterbury Region. The Christchurch urban area lies on the South Island's east coast, just north of Banks Peninsula. It is home to 404,500 residents, making it New Zealand's third-most populous city behind Auckland and Wellington. The Avon River flows through the centre of the city, with an urban park located along its banks.
Archaeological evidence has indicated that people first settled in the Christchurch area in about 1250. Christchurch became a city by Royal Charter on 31 July 1856, making it officially the oldest established city in New Zealand. The Canterbury Association, which settled the Canterbury Plains, named the city after Christ Church, Oxford. The new settlement was laid out in a grid pattern centred on Cathedral Square; during the 19th century there were few barriers to the rapid growth of the urban area, except for the Pacific to the east and the Port Hills to the south.
Agriculture is the historic mainstay of Christchurch's economy. The early presence of the University of Canterbury and the heritage of the city's academic institutions in association with local businesses has fostered a number of technology-based industries. Christchurch is one of five 'gateway cities' for Antarctic exploration, hosting Antarctic support bases for several nations.The city suffered a series of earthquakes between September 2010 and January 2012, with the most destructive of them occurring at 12.51 p.m. on Tuesday, 22 February 2011, in which 185 people were killed and thousands of buildings across the city collapsed or suffered severe damage. By late 2013, 1,500 buildings in the city had been demolished, leading to an ongoing recovery and rebuilding project.
