Laura Vickerson Interview - The Between - Exhibition at the Nickle Arts March 2016
The Between is a new site-specific installation by Vickerson, combining her latest textile work with the collections of Nickle Galleries. A SERIES exhibition organized by Nickle Galleries, curated by Michele Hardy.
Laura Vickerson’s practice has long been drawn from the stuff of life – discarded objects and materials that were at one time a part of everyday experiences. Through changing trends, a general desire to consume, or the vagaries of fashion, things come to outlive their usefulness and quite often become obsolete or discarded. Yet these things also become artifacts of our time, re-presented by Vickerson to create underlying narratives that push the viewer to reconsider what was once familiar. Her materials serve as signifiers of the relationships and connections we have with the world around us and with one another – relationships that ultimately lie at the centre of her explorations.
Laura Vickerson is a multi-media installation artist and educator who lives and works in Calgary. She presently teaches at the Alberta College of Art & Design. She has exhibited extensively in Canada as well as in the U.S., Britain, Turkey, Poland and China. She has produced site-specific installations for various international exhibitions and venues including the Istanbul Biennial, le Manifestation Internationale d’Art de Quebec, as well as a project through Locus + titled “Fairytales and Factories” creating a work for an old Textiles mill in the Yorkshire Dales (Britain). She has participated in artist residencies at The Banff Centre for the Arts (Banff, Alberta) and the “Sympo-Fibres International” in Ste-Hyacinth, Quebec. She has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts, The Canada Council for the Arts, Foreign Affairs and International Trade and the Arts Council of England.
Mireille Perron has been a practicing visual artist, writer, scholar, and educator for more than 30 years. Perron was born in Montréal, Québec. Since 1982, her installations have appeared in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada, Europe and the United States. She is the founder of the Laboratory of Feminist Pataphysics. LFP promotes social experiments that masquerade as artworks/events. Perron has published over eighty essays related to visual arts and craft practice in Canada and abroad. She has participated in several artist residencies, academic conferences as a guest speaker and as chair and co-chair (art and craft history/discourse, cultural studies) and lectured many times about her own artwork (Canada, U.S.A. and Europe.) Perron has also occasionally worked as a guest curator. Perron has been a member of ACAD Faculty since 1990.

Government of Canada announces $700 million/year in new SRHR funding
Oxfam Canada enthusiastically welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement today of $700 million per year in new funding to increase Canada’s global leadership on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), as part of a $1.4 billion commitment for global health.
‘Why are territorial acknowledgements important?’
Reg Crowshoe, former Chief, Piikuni First Nation, and UCalgary senate member, explains the importance of acknowledging the traditional territories of Indigenous people.
The University of Calgary recognizes First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples of Canada as traditional stewards of the land. As the University is located within the Treaty 7 region, public acknowledgement and recognition of the peoples of Treaty 7 is customary. At convocation, conferences, and other large public gatherings hosted by the University of Calgary, it is recommended that opening remarks include an official acknowledgement of the traditional territories of the Treaty 7 people of Southern Alberta. This practice is consistent with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada and the subsequent ‘Calls to Action’. Protocol indicates that the acknowledgement should be made by whomever is the first speaker at an event, and should be mentioned before acknowledgements of dignitaries.

Double Nickel Blown 55 Chev - World of Wheels 2012
Video of the Double Nickel Blown 55 Chev as it recently debuted at the World of Wheels in Calgary on February 16, 2012. The restoration itself involved a 14 month rotisserie transformation of a rust free 1955 Chevrolet into a modern pro street / show car that is worthy of many accolades. Sprayed with House of Kolor black and silver paint, it's been stuffed with a Blown Big Block and topped with an 8-71 blower. It's shifted through a TH400 trans with a TCS 3500 converter and hooks to the ground using a Currie 9 Locker with 35 spline strange axles and 12 Nitto ZR radials on the street. The engine is capable of 1000 horsepower with a good tune but will likely make 850hp/850tq at the higher altitude here in Calgary.
Recent awards at the World of Wheels included Best of Class (Custom Street Machine), Outstanding Display, and Outstanding Street Machine. It also captured the attention of Mequiar's Canada as it's been recognized as a Top 10 car from Western Canada and will soon be featured on canadasbest.ca/carcrazy/vote.php as a potential candidate to represent Canadian HotRods at Sema 2012 and be part of the Mequiar's booth. The winner from Canada will join other national winners and be featured on Car Crazy with Barry Mequiar for a soon to be aired segment of the show. Voting starts May 1st through June 23rd so vote often and tell your close friends. Thanks
Enjoy this video and be sure to vote for it on the website noted above. You can also see the car and the entire build gallery on my website at fiftyfivechev.com

MFA Thesis Exhibition - Installation Art
The 2012 MFA Thesis Exhibition that took place on Thursday, September 13, 2012 in Nickle Galleries, in the Taylor Family Digital Library at the University of Calgary. The Department of Art invited the university community to attend the opening reception celebration for graduating MFA students Chika Modum and Rory O'Connor's thesis exhibitions.
Chika Modum concludes her graduate work with Braided Hair; an exhibition drawn from familiar processes and textures originating in her West African roots interplayed with influences and materials from her present North American space. Creating unfamiliar and surrealistic objects and spaces, Modum evokes a visceral experience that echoes the diverse and hybrid cultural spaces around her.
The House of Seven Gates, the culmination of Rory O'Connor's graduate work, is comprised of six handmade miniature rooms, each viewed through an aperture, and a magnified view of a small farmhouse in Ireland formerly owned by her great-grandparents. This remote dwelling was a social gathering place - where stories were told and memories were made. This exhibition represents O'Connor's longing to give physical form to times and places that no longer exist and through storytelling, O'Connor enjoins viewers to question the validity of what might be accepted as reality.
Thank you to Nathan Hansen, 2nd year MFA student, for the video footage.
