Vancouver Japanese Nikkei Matsuri 2018
The Nikkei Matsuri is an annual festival celebrating Japanese culture that is held early in September at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre in Burnaby. This year marked its sixth anniversary.
With various performances such as Japanese taiko drumming, portable shrine-carrying, traditional buyo and obon dances, a kimono try-on corner, venders, food stalls and more, one can enjoy a true Japanese summer festival right in Metro Vancouver.
As the Consulate General of Japan in Vancouver, we cooperate with other bodies to help introduce Japanese culture. This year, we were able to bring Ninja Tomonosuke from Iga City in Mie Prefecture to show us his authentic ninjutsu skills.

Beta Vulgaris: The Sugar Beet Projects
Exhibit opening BETA VULGARIS: THE SUGAR BEET PROJECTS by Kelty McKinnon with music by Keri Latimer. Saturday Feb. 10, 2pm. Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, 6688 Southoaks Crescent, Burnaby, Canada
Nikkei National Museum’s gallery will be transformed into a Japanese dry garden, punctuated by large sculptural ‘boulders’ made of molten, burnt, and sculpted sugar. A wooden boardwalk will traverse overtop of this landscape conflating the “hills of Mission” to the flat, striated furrows of the sugarbeet fields in southern Alberta.Beta Vulgaris: The Sugar Beet Projects explores the relationship between an apparently benign material, sugar, and the hard times the Japanese community went through. Audiences will be invited to a multimedia Zen garden made of granulated sugar and punctuated by large boulders sculpted out of molten and burnt sugar.
“The traditional Zen garden is an enclosed, meditative space of raked sand and strategically placed boulders. Historically the white sand symbolizes purity, and in the Zen garden it represents water, emptiness, and distance,” explains McKinnon. “Contrasting the expression of sugar’s purity, generosity and neutrality is its history and conditions of labour.”
For most Japanese-Canadians, the sugar beet fields stood for gross injustice during the Second World War, when the BC Security Commission Council organized the Sugar Beet Projects. Due to the labour shortage and the need to supply troops overseas with cheap sugar, Japanese-Canadian internees had no choice but to move to the Prairies or Ontario and work on the sugar beet fields. They were told only if they did so would they be able to live with their families. The evacuees at the time supplied the labour for 65 percent of Alberta’s sugar beet acreage.

「J-Fest 2014」 『Kagerou Project: Unplugged』 【*ageha LIVE】
--uploaded more for my friends who couldn't make it to the show--
(to be quite honest, I'm not 100% proud of this show, but it's been a while since I got back onto a large stage on my own (now that Ryouko has disbanded), so it's a good thing for me to upload it for future reference, too.)
----
I performed a concert panel at this past weekend's J-Fest by Anime Evolution at the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada on March 8th, 2014.
Special thanks to my camera assistants in the audience, Charleston Dung and Suparna member, Lyri! My camcorder can be so finicky sometimes... OTL
Thank you for those that showed up to my live show!
It wasn't my best, I know, and I promise to do better next time!
It's been a year and a half since I had my last solo acoustic performance, ever since I started Ryouko in August 2012. Now that Ryouko has finally come to a close, I decided to get back onto the music scene.
Thank you so much to Anime Evolution for having given me that chance!
----
There was a miscommunication malfunction between my plug-in acoustic guitar and the centre's sound board, and we had no mic stands for use for the guitar, either. That's why the second microphone is taped onto the music stand. Unfortunately, we overestimated how tall I really was (OTL), so the microphone ended up being taped up too high for the duration of the show.
But, you know what they say: THE SHOW MUST GO ON!
...I should really get my wires and guitar checked, just in case...;;; OTL
I'll be uploading a series of clips from J-Fest onto my vlog channel soon!

Relocation centers in California and Canada - Exhibition Two Views 2013
In time for the 25th Anniversary of Japanese-Canadian Redress Celebration. the Ottawa War Museum is holding the exhibition Two Views -- Photographs by Ansel Adams and Leonard Frank. The sound is from the moving presentation given by Sachiko Okuda.
