Toshogu Shrine - Nikko - 日光東照宮 - 4K Ultra HD
The Toshogu Shrine in Nikko is a very popular tourist attraction for both Japanese and foreigners alike. It is the final resting place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate that ruled Japan for over 250 years.
The shrine consists of more than a dozen buildings located in a beautiful forest outside the main city. The design and complexity of the shrine’s decorations are unique, and a marked contrast to the typically simple and understated shrines in Japan. The architectural design of this shrine spread to other locations such as the Nezu Shrine in Tokyo or the Toshogu Shrine of Ueno.
For those who are adventurous and don’t mind climbing some stairs, you can follow the path to the tomb of Ieyasu. There you will find Nemurineko, a famous carving of a sleeping cat. While the tomb isn’t as spectacular as the shrine, the surrounding forest gives the tomb an eerie mystic feeling, making it worth your walk to get there.

Complete Trip Guide From Tokyo to Nikko JAPAN - UNCUT VERSION
Nikko is a small city in Japan’s Tochigi Prefecture, in the mountains north of Tokyo. It’s the site of Toshogu, the famed Shinto shrine established in 1617 as a lavish memorial for Tokugawa Ieyasu, founding ruler of the Tokugawa shogunate, or Edo Period. The shrine comprises the gilded Yomeimon Gate, the main sanctuary set in a cedar grove and the tomb itself.
Japan is a lovely country to be visited and we loved to go there again someday.

Nikko Japan | World Heritage Site of Japan | Nikko Toshogu Shrine |
Almost all of the present-day shrine complex was rebuilt in 1636, twenty years after Tokugawa Ieyasu’s enshrinement. Fifty-five buildings, including Yomeimon Gate (designated a National Treasure), were completed in just one year and five months. According to the shrine’s financial records, the cost was equivalent to of ¥40 billion in today’s money. The renovation project was administered by Akimoto Yasutomo, the governor of Tajima Province, and the actual construction and carpentry work was the responsibility of master carpenter Kora Bungo Munehiro.
One of the special features of the shrine complex is the use of paths and stairways that follow the natural topography of the site, allowing the arrangement of the shrine buildings in a pleasing balance to create a solemn, religious atmosphere. The buildings are lacquered and decorated with vibrant colors, and the pillars and other structures are covered in a multitude of carvings. The carvings are not simply design elements; they convey expressions of religious belief as well as scholarship and philosophy.
The shrine complex was registered as a World Heritage site in December 1999.
Toshogu Shrine, resting spot of Tokugawa Ieyasu, in Nikko, Japan
Toshogu Shrine is a lavishly decorated shrine complex located north of Tokyo in the city of Nikko, Japan. Many buildings are found scattered around a beautiful forest. Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543–1616), the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, is enshrined here. The shrine features both Shinto and Buddhist elements. What makes the shrine unique from other shrines in Japan are the gold decorations that adorn many of the buildings. Many shrines in Japan stress simplicity for the architecture of shrines.

Nikko's Tosho-gu Shrine | A UNESCO World Heritage site | Tour Japan
Nikko's Tosho-gu [Shrine] A UNESCO World Heritage site | Tour Japan #nikko #unesco #tourjapan.
Welcome to Nikko and the Toshogu Shrine.
Nikko Toshogu Shrine is dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), the founder of the Edo Bakufu (also called Tokugawa shogunate, 1603-1867). Most of the actual building was made under the reign of the third Tokugawa shogun, Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651). The Shrine, including the Yomeimon Gate, is full of beautiful wooden sculptures.
The numerous animals in those sculptures are thought to be symbols of peace. Among these, you will find the famous Three Wise Monkeys representing the maxim See no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil taught by the Tendai Sect, a Japanese school of Buddhism.
