Your South Africa Tour Guide Gerhard Pretorius from Hotspots2c
There are as many amazing tour guides as there are amazing places to see in this world, so it’s probably no surprise that we’re back with another guide interview! Today, we’re talking to Gerhard Pretorius, a tour guide in South Africa with Hotspots2c, about his job, his country, and his favourite travel memories. Follow along to learn more about travelling in beautiful South Africa, or to get the inside scoop about what it’s like to be a tour guide!
Gerhard thinks that being a guide is the best job a person can do, and we think you’ll find it hard to disagree when you see the kind of adventures he gets to have - and get paid for! - on a daily basis. Not only does he get to spend time outdoors and stay close to nature, every day is different. Even when showing travellers the same destinations, there’s always something new to discover and a unique experience to be had.
Animal lover? If South Africa isn’t already on the very top of your bucket list, it should be! Watch as Gerhard interacts with elephants, leopards, lions, ostriches, and other incredible animals. While it’s never a guarantee to see specific animals on a safari, you’ll always have an incredible time exploring the stunning scenery and getting to know the habitats of some of the rarest and most unique animals on the planet.
As far as Gerhard is concerned, there are two “best parts” of visiting South Africa - the ability to do some amazing, heart-pounding activities such as bungee jumping and ziplining, and the possibility of seeing the Big Five! Watch as lucky travellers on tour with Gerhard have the opportunity to do both. If that doesn’t sound like the perfect South African adventure, we don’t know what does!
Can you resist the call of the wild for much longer? We don’t blame you if you can’t! If you can’t wait a second more to start planning your trip to all that South Africa has to offer, head over to TourRadar to explore this itinerary and others like it.

PENTHOUSE CONDO TOUR! ONLY $550/MONTH!
Check out this messy $550/month penthouse condo we scored while living in Penang. Listen to Nina speak chinese. Make some new Korean friends with us and partake in some random adventures!
ABOUT US:
We originally quit our jobs and sold it all to travel the world for as long as we could afford. We went nearly broke after 6 months as we depleted most of our savings while traveling Cairo-Egypt, Dar Es Salaam-Tanzania, Maputo-Mozambique and along the Garden Route of South Africa: Johannesburg, Kruger National Park, Durban, East London, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
We were then at a crossroads, with our savings nearly depleted we had enough for one of the following: 1. Fly home, settle and/or save up more money to travel. 2. Fly to China where I (Vic) had a friend teaching English. We chose Chengdu China. Where we lived and worked for nearly 6 months, making visa runs every 2 months to nearby countries such as Hong Kong and Bangkok-Thailand. We decided to leave Chengdu in November 2017 after resolving pregnancy complications for-soon-to be baby #2. After getting cleared for strictly overland travel, while pregnant, we embarked on a 6-month overland Journey through Vietnam(3months), Cambodia(2 months, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap), and Thailand(2 weeks). We then arrived in Malaysia to have a water birth and live for the next 9 months. The baby was born 2 weeks early on May 19th, 2018. While living in Malaysia we also had to do 2 visa runs (3 month intervals), the first time we took a train to the Thai border then immediately went back, same day, within minutes. We also flew to Medan Indonesia for about 1 week. After Malaysia, we spent 2 months in Phuket Thailand. Went back to Penang Malaysia for 1 more month. Finally, we visited Chengdu China one more time, for 1 month, primarily to attend a Chinese friend's wedding.
Now we are seasonal travelers! Traveling non-stop for up to 6 months at a time! We typically head back to Chicago early summer, Mayish, and stay through the first semester, Decemberish, so that our eldest daughter can attend grade school!
We work year-round, from our laptops doing various things remotely. Everything from teaching children English online to managing Airbnbs, custom website services, working our investment portfolios, graphic design work to stock trading. But our specialty is family photography and videography. We love to partner with various brands and tourism boards as we travel to help showcase their products, services, city or country!
We started as a family of 3. Just your average young couple with a child. Living in Chicago's north suburbs, working 9-5's and looking forward to the weekends. Now, almost 3 years later, we are a family of 4. Welcoming our second baby in Malaysia! This is our life! And it can be yours too!!!

A Day in the Okavango Delta
Considered one of nature's masterpieces, the Okavango Delta is one of Africa's truly great wildernesses. A World Heritage Site, this vast and virtually untouched freshwater wetland lies at the heart of Botswana's arid Kalahari Desert and supports an abundance of wildlife within a setting of dazzling natural beauty.
We take you on a typical day’s safari in the Delta. Flying in to your lodge from Maun, you can appreciate the network of oxbow lakes and islands that make up the Okavango. Your first game drive – from the airstrip to your camp – may afford you sightings of everything from spotted hyena to rhino and elephant. Lunch is taken on the water, and your afternoon passes on a classic mokoro (or traditional dugout canoe) ride that allows you to drink in the spectacular sunset.
Comprising the Moremi Game Reserve and numerous private wildlife concessions, the Okavango Delta is home to huge numbers of elephant, buffalo, lion, hippo, giraffe and zebra plus shy antelope like tsessebe and sitatunga. A predator’s paradise, the Okavango is a world-famous stronghold for leopard, lion and wild dog as well as many rare and unusual mammal and bird species - if it's wildlife you want, an Okavango Delta safari will deliver. Look out for honey badgers, hippos and Pel’s fishing owls.
Yet despite its wild nature, the Okavango Delta is surprisingly accessible (there are short-haul direct flights from both Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa) and you'll certainly get to see it close up: go on guided game drives, nature walks, mokoro (canoe) and boat trips during your safari in the Okavango Delta - it's a destination with a wide range of safari activities and features some of Africa's most luxurious lodges and camps.
Romantics will love the intimate, exclusive nature of its remote fly-in lodges and an Okavango Delta honeymoon is the natural choice for those seeking undiluted romance in beautiful locations. Moreover, easy combinations with Botswana's other wildlife hotspots such as Chobe National Park make the Okavango Delta an ideal destination for safari aficionados and nature photographers.
