Dory - could she be your dream boat? A fully restored FMC Josher
If you become the next owner of Dory you will become part of the boat’s history, that stretches back to 1934 when Dory was built by W.J. YARWOOD AND Sons at Northwich for Fellows Morton and Clayton and fitted with a 9 horsepower Bolinder engine.
When the canals were nationalised it passed to the British Transport Commission. Due to a shortage of butty boats in 1951 Dory, along with her sister boat Dace lost their engines and were converted to butty boats.
She was in active use carrying cargoes in the Midlands and paired with the motor boat Ibex – strangely Ibex is also currently at Norbury junction and both boats are moored side by side once more, as they must have been for many years in the middle of the last century.
In 1974 she was donated to the National Trust and operated by the Stratford Canal Society, where she played an active role in reopening the Stratford canal.
Dory was saved from a muddy grave by Andrew Boucher in 1989 and he had extensive work carried out by Ian Kemp at Ellesmere Port to return Dory to the motor boat she had been back in 1934. At this time a twin cylinder Armstrong Siddeley diesel engine was installed in the engine room.
By 1993 she had been sold and renamed as Elaine. The new owners were Bath Stone Company and Dory was a true working boat once more, It carried stone from the Kennet and Avon Canal to Windsor Castle for the repairs required after a catastrophic fire at the royal palace.
She regained her original name in 1996 and the current Bolinder engine was installed in ten years later.
The boat was bought by Norbury Wharf Ltd in September 2018 and has been undergoing restoration to take her back to her 1934 appearance ever since.
As you will see, the work has been extensive and it will be completed by a full set of covers to provide Dory’s hold with winter protection
If you are interested in becoming the next custodian of Dory contact Norbury Wharf on 01785 284292.
