Steamboats On The Red
Looking at the shallow twists and turns of the Red River, its hard to imagine that steampowered paddlewheel boats were once the most important transportation link between St. Paul and Winnipeg. From the first in 1859 to the last that sank in 1909, Red River steamboats hauled thousands of settlers and millions of pounds of freight across the border. Although it lasted barely 50 years, the age of the steamboat forged a commercial network between the United States and Canada that exists to this day in the I29 corridor.
To shine a spotlight on this important piece of prairie history, Steamboats on the Red examines the history of steamboat transportation on the Red River and the impact this important trade route had on the development of the region.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and most powerful particle accelerator. It first started up on 10 September 2008, and remains the latest addition to CERN’s accelerator complex. The LHC consists of a 27-kilometre ring of superconducting magnets with a number of accelerating structures to boost the energy of the particles along the way.
ATLAS is one of two general-purpose detectors at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It investigates a wide range of physics, from the search for the Higgs boson to extra dimensions and particles that could make up dark matter. Although it has the same scientific goals as the CMS experiment, it uses different technical solutions and a different magnet-system design.
ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) is a heavy-ion detector on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) ring. It is designed to study the physics of strongly interacting matter at extreme energy densities, where a phase of matter called quark-gluon plasma forms.
A range of experiments at CERN investigate physics from cosmic rays to supersymmetry.

South Bronx, BX | DiverseCITY
This month we visit the South Bronx. Hip Hop’s home has developed a reputation for being one of the poorest and hard scrabble districts in the country. On this episode we’ll talk about some of those dark days and highlight some bright spots. You’ll hear about two diverging plans to fix long standing issues caused by the Sheridan Expressway; we’ll tell you about why some South Bronx students are taking the Department of Education to court; we’ll profile a teacher who’s using an ancient African art to educate students here in America; and finally, a South Bronx living legend tells us how the neighborhood has evolved over the decades.

article on storm
Will a weekend rainstorm signal the end of hot summer weather in the Northeast?
A rainstorm moving up from the south will coincide with a shift in the jet stream and mark the beginning of an extended period of wet, humid conditions in the northeastern US that may last into August.
A storm is forecast to develop along the southern Atlantic coast and begin to unleash flooding rainfall late this week.
As the storm begins to move and gain some strength, it will force drenching rain northward along the mid-Atlantic coast and into New England this weekend.
While the rain may not be as intense as that on the Carolina and Georgia coasts, it can be heavy enough to cause a period of urban flooding.
Increasing winds along the coast are likely to create rough surf and strong rip currents.
Depending on the speed of the storm the heaviest rain may have already shifted to northern New England by Sunday afternoon.
People with outdoor plans or heading to the beach this weekend should be prepared for wet weather during part of their trip. The combination of rain and poor visibility may cause vehicle traffic to slow to a crawl at times. Airline delays due to a low cloud ceiling are likely as well at times.
The combination of rain and breezy conditions may seem more like a weak nor'easter from the spring or autumn in places such as Norfolk, Virginia; Ocean City, Maryland; Atlantic City, New Jersey; New York City and Boston.
Second storm to move in from the central US
At the same time farther west, a storm from the Plains will create a swath of rain and thunderstorms over the Midwest to the western slopes of the central Appalachians. Localized flooding downpours may also also occur with this storm.
Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago and Nashville, Tennessee, are also in line for some wet weather.
It is possible that a gap remains between both the coastal storm and the Midwest storm from central Virginia to central Pennsylvania and western and central New York state. If this occurs, little to no rain may fall in these areas through much of the weekend.
If the storms link up, then these in-between areas may be almost as wet as often as areas farther to the east and to the west by Sunday.
A link up is most likely Sunday night and Monday, when more of a mosaic of rain and embedded thunderstorms is likely throughout the Northeast.
Will a tropical storm develop?
There is a low chance the storm takes on characteristics of a tropical depression or tropical storm before moving inland over the Northeast later this weekend.
Since the feature will not be close to warm water for very long, that will limit the odds of tropical development, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Rob Miller.
It is possible that a sub-tropical storm, which has both tropical and non-tropical traits, may form.
Extended period of wet, humid conditions anticipated in the Northeast
As AccuWeather long-range meteorologists have been suggesting since early July, the overall weather pattern will become conducive for more rounds of wet weather in the Northeast and humid conditions along the Eastern Seaboard.
The same southward dip in the jet stream that develops over the North Central states and frequently funnels unseasonably cool air into the Midwest is likely to often pull moisture northward along the Atlantic coast, according to AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok.
As the pattern evolves, downpours that drenched areas on Tuesday may be a sample of what may occur in the coming weeks.
While the pattern may not bring rain every day everywhere, rainfall is likely to be above average, and people may get frustrated by the frequency of showers and thunderstorms as far as outdoor plans, sporting events and construction projects are concerned.
Enough rain is likely to fall in many areas to wipe out any rainfall deficit this summer.
Some incidents of flooding are likely, since it could rain hard enough long enough in part of the Northeast.
The pattern is likely to have staying power through the end of July and may persist well into August, Pastelok said.
EXPO – Magic of the White City (Narrated by Gene Wilder)
Narrated by Gene Wilder, EXPO – Magic of the White City brings the Chicago World’s Fair to life. Experience the world of 1893 through a cinematic visit to Chicago’s Columbian Exposition.
Subscribe for more great documentaries!
Nearly 28 million people visited the Fair. Dubbed the “White City,” it inspired future innovators like Henry Ford and Frank Lloyd Wright, unveiled the Ferris Wheel and Cracker Jack®, and, in many ways, marked the beginning of the 20th century. Many of the era’s greatest achievements in science, technology and culture were unveiled there. The grounds were designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, famous for his design of New York City’s Central Park, and constructed under the supervision of Daniel Burnham.
The Fair was an engineering marvel. On opening day, President Grover Cleveland depressed a golden telegraph key which sent the first courses of electricity throughout the Fair powering fountains, machines, electric railways and thousands of lights. It was the first use of electricity on such a massive scale.
In addition, fairgoers enjoyed the Midway Plaisance where a one-mile boulevard of fun offered camel riding and guilty pleasures such as belly dancing, street fighting and beer drinking. Against the backdrop of 1893’s troubles with workers’ rights, prejudice, discrimination and corruption, the World’s Columbian Exposition cast a brief ray of hope for the future of humanity.
Filmed in spectacular High-Definition, EXPO – Magic of the White City immerses viewers in one of the world’s biggest extravaganzas and one of the most unforgettable events in American history. There will never be another event like it… or will there?

Jean Shin
MFA Fine Arts presents a talk by faculty member Jean Shin, who is recognized for her monumental installations that transform everyday objects into elegant expressions of identity and community. For each project, she amasses vast collections of a particular object—prescription pill bottles, sports trophies, sweaters—which are often sourced through donations from individuals in a participating community. These intimate objects then become the materials for her conceptually rich sculptures, videos and site-specific installations. Distinguished by her meticulous, labor-intensive process, and her engagement of community, Shin's arresting installations reflect individuals' personal lives as well as collective issues that we face as a society.
Shin's work has been widely exhibited in over 150 major museums and cultural institutions, including solo exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, Fabric Workshop and Museum in Philadelphia, Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC, Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art in Arizona and Crow Collection in Dallas. Her works have been on view at the New Museum, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Museum of Fine Art Boston, Asia Society, Brooklyn Museum, Queens Museum, Museum of Art and Design, Barnes Foundation, among other prestigious museums.
As an accomplished artist practicing in the public realm, Shin also realizes large-scale, permanent installations commissioned by major public agencies on the federal level as well as city and arts for transit programs. She recently completed a landmark commission for the MTA's Second Avenue Subway at the 63rd Street Station in New York City.
In recognition of excellence, Shin has received numerous awards including two New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowships in Architecture/Environmental Structures (2008) and Sculpture (2003), Korea Arts Foundation of America, Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, Asian Cultural Council and Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Biennial Art Award. Her works and interviews have been featured in many publications, including Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, Artnews, Frieze Art, Flash Art, Tema Celeste, Hyperallergic, Artsy, Brooklyn Rail and The New York Times.
Born in Seoul, South Korea, and raised in the United States, Shin attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 1999 and received a BFA and MS from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She is tenured Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at Pratt Institute and recipient of Pratt's 2017 Alumni Achievement Award. She lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
HABS Fly-though of Historic Castle Pinckey
The construction of Castle Pinckney was begun in 1809 on Shutes Folly Island in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. Designed by Jonathan Williams, the first superintendent of the United States Military Academy, it remains one of only three surviving American castles, a rare form of circular fort based on French precedents. In February 2011 a comprehensive documentation project of Castle Pinckney was undertaken by a team from the Historic American Buildings Survey, consisting of architects Paul Davidson and Mark Schara, photographer James Rosenthal, and historian Gigi Price. The HABS team was assisted by students from the Master of Science in Historic Presrvation program at Clemson University / College of Charleston, under the direction of Professor Ashley Robbins Wilson. The animation of Castle Pinckney was prepared by Paul Davidson using the point clouds obtained from 12 scan stations, and rendered in Pointools with high dynamic range panoramic photography.

Rajasthan's economy is primarily agricultural and pastoral. Wheat and barley are cultivated over large areas, as are pulses, sugarcane, and oilseeds. Cotton and tobacco are the state's cash crops. Rajasthan is among the largest producers of edible oils in India and the second largest producer of oilseeds. Rajasthan is also the biggest wool-producing state in India and the main opium producer and consumer. Rajasthan is culturally rich and has artistic and cultural traditions which reflect the ancient Indian way of life. There is rich and varied folk culture from villages which is often depicted and is symbolic of the state. Highly cultivated classical music and dance with its own distinct style is part of the cultural tradition of Rajasthan. The music is uncomplicated and songs depict day-to-day relationships and chores, more often focused around fetching water from wells or ponds.

Brewery Ommegang is a Belgian brewery located near Cooperstown, New York that specializes in Belgian-style ales.
Ommegang began brewing Belgian-style ales in 1997. Founded by Don Feinberg and Wendy Littlefield, owners of Vanberg & DeWulf beer import company, and three family owned Belgian breweries including Duvel Moortgat. Ommegang started up in a purpose-built building based on a traditional Belgian farmhouse, set on a former 136-acre (0.55 km2) hop farm in the Susqehanna River Valley, four miles (6 km) south of Cooperstown, New York in the Town of Milford.
Since its opening, Ommegang has grown rapidly — in early 2005, its owner said they have been unable to meet demand for their ales and as a result would add 40 percent to their production capacity over the next year.
By 2003, the Belgian breweries had all been absorbed into large corporations. Feinberg and Littlefield sold their share of Ommegang in 2003 to Belgian brewer Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat, brewers of the world-renowned Duvel Golden Ale. Duvel Moortgat brewed limited amounts of beer for Brewery Ommegang in 2006 to help meet demand, but has not brewed any since then.
Brewery Ommegang currently distributes its beers in 43 states and Washington, D.C., including Alaska and Hawaii but excluding Montana, Idaho, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, West Virginia, and Mississippi. Ommegang has also begun exporting to Canada and the US Virgin Islands.
Each summer, the brewery hosts a large beer-tasting event, known as Belgium Comes to Cooperstown. The event, which occurs on a Saturday in July or August, includes four hours of unlimited beer sampling of over 200 Belgian and Belgian-style beers, followed by food, live music, and a bonfire.
On 7 October 2007, Brewery Ommegang hosted the inaugural CX @ Ommegang, a cyclocross race, organized by Team SCARR, a cycling team with Brewery Ommegang as their title sponsor. Cyclocross is wildly popular in Belgium and a cyclocross race on the grounds of a Belgian-style brewery was a natural fit. Well over 150 racers from all over New York State registered for the event. The course included a hairpin turn inside the main event tent.
