Holywood Town Belfast - Places to Visit in Northern Ireland
Cities and towns, these are the two different places that tourists get attracted to when it comes to visiting a new country for the first time and trying to explore as much of it as possible, or even for the local people who want to get to know more about their own personal country.
Holywood town is part of Northern Ireland, it is located in the metropolitan area of Belfast city in county Down. This town in Northern Ireland is a civil parish and townland of 755 acres, lying on the shore of Belfast Lough, between Belfast and Bangor.
Going back into the history of this old city, one will get to ask about the name which lots of people now pronounce in the same way as Hollywood is pronounced. Back in the old days, the name Holywood was rather Sanctus Boscus, which means Holy Wood, and it was given to this place by the Normans after the woodland surrounding the monastery founded by St. Laseran before 640.
There are different interesting things that might be held in this town, such as the jazz and blues festival which is held there. There are other things that distinguish this town as well, such as the distinctive building known as the Old Priory. Even though this might sometimes be mistaken for the famous Hollywood in the United States of America, it is also considered one of the most visited towns in county Down for the fashion boutiques that it has, the delis and the galleries.
Holywood is also one of Northern Ireland's famous towns and places because it boasts Ireland's only surviving Maypole dating back to 1700 when a Dutch ship ran aground offshore and as a show of gratitude, they erected their broken mast.
We have already mentioned that the jazz and blues festival is held in Holywood, but there is also the annual May Day Celebrations which are considered the main focus when it comes to this town, and this is actually one of the big events in Ards and North Down calendar, when the school children dance around the maypole alongside market stalls and family attractions.
Holywood town stands as one of the beautiful places with a history carried behind which tourists and locals could visit and check what it has to offer - at least we have already mentioned some of the reasons why we believe this is considered a good place to travel to - but there are still other towns that could be visited in county Down as well, such as the Village of Saintfield ( Donaghadee which is 18 miles away from Belfast ( Crawfordsburn ( and Portaferry (
When it comes to the different attractions in county Down, Northern Ireland, there are different things which we should refer to as well in addition to these towns which we have mentioned, such as checking the Whiterocks Beach in Portrush ( Dundrum Castle ( Ballywalter Beach ( Down County Museum ( Tollymore Forest ( and lots of other things to dig deep behind and discover if you got the chance to be in county Down.
Being a place that is not far away from Belfast city, it is also considered a great suggestion for those touring the city to consider making a different kind of plan and add this destination to their list, they will end up visiting another part of Northern Ireland which they might have never thought about visiting before. The Ulster Folk and Transport Museum in County Down at Cultra, is another touristic attraction that is just next to Holywood which visitors and travelers could also check (
Have you ever been to Holywood in Northern Ireland before? Have you ever realized that there is another Holywood than the one you are used to hear about when it comes to the United States of America? Have you ever been there or ever planned a trip to this beautiful town in county Down? At least now you could make a proper plan and enjoy yourself there.
Holywood in county Down, Northern Ireland, might not be the biggest town to visit or the one with the most attractions, but it is definitely one of the towns close to Belfast that could still offer history along with some attractions that people could enjoy visiting and bring back stories from to their homes and families.
So, are you now planning to visit Holywood and see what this small town getting mixed up with the big US Hollywood actually looks like? Plan your visit as a local or a tourist and let us know your feedback and hear about the stories you will have there in this small town.
Enjoy watching the video about Holywood!

County Down Walk | Northern Ireland | Irish Castles | NI
A walk through county Down in Northern Ireland...
Northern Ireland is formed of six different counties which county Down is just one of them, which is located in the northeast of the island of Ireland. County Down is one of the thirty two traditional counties of Ireland and is within the province of Ulster.
There are different things to be done in county Down and there are magical views and scenery to be spotted, and that is definitely one of the different reasons why the people of Belfast consider it their getaway since it is just a short drive away; they can hike, enjoy the calm and beautiful scenery, or just even play golf.
There are different things to be done in county Down - which you could definitely include in this walk - these things include climbing the Mourne Mountains, visiting Tollymore Forest ( enjoying a golf game, roaming Mount Stewart ( visiting the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum ( checking St.Patrick's ( enjoy the beauty of Strangford Lough ( visit Down County Museum ( and enjoy the beauty of nature in general which you will definitely fall in love with when it comes to county Down.
The combination between having a peaceful time, enjoying the nature, visiting some old Irish castles, playing around, and even checking some of the destinations that appeared in the famous movie series Game of Thrones, is considered the perfect combination that would be calling out for visitors and tourists to come and visit county Down with all the beauty that it tends to offer.
Game of thrones is one of the famous movie series that people all around the world are watching, and travelling to Northern Ireland in general will bring a dream true to all the fans because they will get the chance to see some of the locations in which the movie was filmed and even check some of the doors that appeared throughout the episodes. While being in county Down, checking Castle Ward will be one of the things to be done by those fans, which will tend to bring part of county Down to them as well.
County Down is divided into different towns, the largest of them is Bangor which is located on the northeast coast, and there are also three other large towns and cities on its border; Newry lies on the western border with county Armagh, while Lisburn and Belfast lie on the northern border with county Antrim.
County Down contains both, the southernmost point of Northern Ireland (Cranfield Point) and the easternmost point of Ireland (Burr Point). There are different interesting geographical information that one should know about county Down in Northern Ireland, such as the two significant peninsulas that it contains: Ards Peninsula and Lecale Peninsula.
Northern Ireland is known with its beautiful nature and the different greenery which the eyes will get to see and part of this is found in county Down. County Down has several islands off the Down Coast: Mew Island, Light House Island, and the Copeland Islands, all of which lie in the north of the Ards peninsula. Gunn Island lies off the Lecale coast, and this comes in addition to the number of small islands in Strangford Lough.
There are different places of interest to be visited when it comes to county Down in addition to the ones already mentioned. In county Down there is Exploris which is the Northern Ireland aquarium that is located in Portaferry, there is also Scrabo Tower which is located in Newtownards, Saul where St. Patrick said his first eucharist in Ireland, the Old Inn in Crawfordsburn is one of Ireland's oldest hostelries with records dating back to 1614, and lots of other beautiful places that one would not want to miss.
County Down borders county Antrim to the north, the Irish Sea to the east, county Armagh to the west, and county Louth across Carlingford Lough to the southwest, and this could pretty much sum up why county Down is considered one of the most favorite when it comes to tourists - it brings everything for them just like that.
This is all what you will need to know about county Down in Northern Ireland and the top attractions in it, and by now you should know where you want to go during your upcoming visit to Northern Ireland.
You could check more videos on our channel and get different suggestions and ideas about the places to go to, the things never to miss, and the destinations to choose in order to go and have some fun along the way.

Clandeyboye O'Neill Inauguration Stone Chair Ulster Museum
We are in the Saints and Scholars section of the Ulster Museum Belfast. This section contains a lot of medieval Irish history/antiquities.
We are here to find and film the ancient Clandeboye O'Neill inauguration Stone chair made from one complete piece of sandstone that probably was originaly quarried from near Cultra Bangor. I believe that this special 'crowning' chair was dug out of the field in 1750 at Castlreagh where we believe that Con O'Neill's Grey Castle stronghold fort/castle was sited. The chair itself is lob-sided and doesn't look very comfortable but it does remain unlike the Tyrone O'Neill 'chair' from Tullaghoge which was smashed up in 1605 by Lord Mountjoy. This curious but very special chair would have held great symbolic resonance to people of the time.
'The Clandeboye O'Neills were a branch of the O'Neills of Tyrone who settled in south Antrim and north Down in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries in what had been the Anglo-Norman earldom of Ulster. The name Clandeboye, or Clann Aodh Buide, refers to their descent from Aodh Buidhe, or Hugh the Yellow-Haired, who died in 1283. Their chair may have been modelled on that at Tullaghogue, on which the O'Neills of Tyrone were inaugurated, and is the only surviving example of its kind. The Clandeboye O'Neills lost their independence with the rest of Gaelic Ulster as a result of the Nine Year's war. But the family survived, and in 1680 Cormac mac Airt Oig O'Neill sponsored the compilation of Leabhar Cloinne Aodha Buidhe, the Book of Clandeboye, a manuscript collection of O'Neill genealogies and praise poems.'
'Con O'Neill, head of the Clandeboye O'Neills, is a fascinating character. He was the last of the great clan to own the massive areas of Upper Clandeboye, Lower Clandeboye and the Great Ards - which stretched from almost Ballymena to Killyleagh and included the whole of north Down and the Ards Peninsula.
Con's lifetime saw the end of old medieval Anglo/Irish Ireland and the emergence of a new modern Ulster with Scotland at the centre of Ulster's development. During his latter years Con moved from his grand castle of Castle Reagh to Ballylenaghan / Knockbracken (around 1608), and then to the lower tip of the Ards Peninsula to the remote townland of Tullycarnan (around 1616). Con died around 1618, and was said to have been buried at the old church of Knockcolumbkille, which was situated in what is now Glenmachan or Garnerville in east Belfast.
Con O'Neill bridge and the Connswater Greenway
Around 1606 when anything that's useful began, Ballyhackamore was acquired by Sir James Hamilton from Con O'Neill. As was Ballymacarrett. The maps which Thomas Raven drew for Hamilton, for both places and many more, are held at North Down Museum. Slightly south, the townland of Ballyrushboy was given by Con O'Neill to Thomas Montgomery, the man who had carried out Con's dramatic jailbreak from Carrickfergus. And slightly further south again, up in the hills that overlook east Belfast, was Con's home castle of Castle Reagh. The castle is long gone now, but the Presbyterian church (first built in 1650) is said to be pretty close to where the castle once was. Today all of this area is urban East Belfast, packed with rows of houses, shops, small businesses, schools, churches and factories. However, not all of the history has gone. Along the Beersbridge Road, tucked in between Elmgrove Primary School and the local Elim Pentecostal Church, still stands Con O'Neill's bridge.
If you do a search on this blog for Con O'Neill you'll find out lots about him, which I'll not repeat here. He gave the river, Connswater its name (which of course is a common Scottish naming form for rivers, ie Conn's Water), which centuries later (1984 to be precise) became the name of the main local shopping centre (or 'mall' for US readers!). Notes on con O' Neill are lifted from the Mark Thompson Blog ( )

Grey Point UK Best Preserved Coastal Fort 2019
This is Grey Point Fort Naval Gun Battery.
This coastal Fort is widely believed to be the best preserved 20th Century coastal fort surviving in the UK!
Construction of the battery began in 1904, with the guns mounted by 1907. The battery was armed with two 6-inch Mark VII Breech loading guns.
Grey Point Fort guards the entrance to Belfast Lough. It lies on the southerside of the lough close to Helen's Bay and Crawfordsburn Co Down. The closest large town is Bangor where General Eisenhower waved off the D-Day landing invasion fleet in June 1944.
This remarkable outdoor living history museum is equipped with two magnificent 6'', 23 feet long, guns. These guns are fired on ceremonial occasions and are still in good working order.
The Fort also houses a most unusual hands-on military museum. Volunteers have created a fantastic museum of military memorabilia,-medals,- uniforms,- photographs and weaponry from the First and Second World Wars. There is also a unique collection of radio equipment, together with a section devoted to the Titanic. Expert guides are on hand to assist visitors of all ages. No admission to unaccompanied children under 16.
The Fort was completed in 1907. As well as the massive guns visitors can also see the original observation post and three searchlight positions. While a key part of Belfast’s defences against naval attack, it proved of limited value during the German air attacks on the city in 1941.
Open: Friday, Saturday, Sunday 10:00 - 16:00

Rembrandts Etchings Now at Ulster Museum Dec 2019
I've dropped into the fabulous Ulster Museum on the Stranmillis Road Belfast to check out 2 out of 6 of their recently acquired Rembrandt Etchings. Unfortunately there is no video or photographing allowed of this artwork.
The Ulster Museum 'has received six works by Rembrandt as a result of a deal over an outstanding tax bill.
Two of the etchings have been put on display in the Ulster Museum in Belfast, with the other four due to be exhibited at the venue soon.
They date from the 1630s to the 1650s and are the first Rembrandt works to be acquired by a Northern Ireland museum.
The were given to the tax authorities as part of an agreement to settle an inheritance tax bill of over £150,000.
A government scheme allows people to settle tax bills by handing over valuable artworks.
Arts Council England received them as a result of the tax settlement and gave them to the Ulster Museum.
The Dutch painter died 350 years ago.
His etchings entitled Six's Bridge and The Adoration Of The Shepherds have been added to the Ulster Museum's Masterpieces of Dutch Landscapes Painting exhibition.
The four etchings that have yet to be displayed are:
Bearded Man In A Furred Cap And Robe
The Artist's Mother
The Sleeping Herdsman
The Descent From The Cross By Torchlight
All six etchings will be on show in a new exhibition dedicated to Rembrandt and his influence on printmaking.
Grey Point Fort, Helens Bay, Bangor
Grey Point Fort is one of the best preserved early 20th century coastal forts anywhere in the British Isles. Situated in Helen's Bay, Grey Point Fort houses a most unusual hands-on military museum. It also hosts a number of special commemorative events during the year. The Fort was completed in 1907 with at its heart two massive 6 inch diameter guns which commanded the entrance to Belfast Lough. While a key part of Belfast’s defences against naval attack, it proved of limited value during the German air attacks on the city in 1941. There are still two magnificent 23 feet long guns.

Last remaining? UK 2WW Gun battery Grey Point Fort Bangor
I'm over with son Ben (who is fliming, editing and providing the music), at the super Grey Point Fort Gun battery found at Helen's Bay near Bangor, to give you a glimpse of what you can expect to see if you pay a visit. This has to be the last or one of the last remaining intact operational gun batteries from the 2nd World War anywhere in the UK!
The fort boasts one of the best working coastal gun batteries remaining in the UK! Indeed it may even be the only working example left! The 6 inch guns are fired on ceremonial occasions. When readied they fired 100 lb shells a distance of up to 5-6 miles and covered Belfast Lough in the event of a German sea attack. A similar battery, long since gone, covered the other side of the lough, across the channel at Kilroot power station.
The fort which holds a multitude of volunteer collected, military memorabilia, from miscellaneous war time eras, is open over the Summer months (Winter at weekends ) and it is all free! It is brilliant! Well worth a visit.
Also worth mentioning is the 2WW 25lb field Gun sitting in the grounds. The field gun on display is I believe a 25 pounder of WW2 vintage. The Ordnance QF 25-pounder, or more simply 25-pounder or 25-pdr, was the major British field gun and howitzer during World War II. It was introduced into service just before the war started, combining high-angle and direct-fire, relatively high rates of fire, and a reasonably lethal shell in a highly mobile piece. It is very interesting to note that last week, Sept 2104, the Kurds in Northen Iraq were using the exact same 'vintage' gun to good effect to defend their positions against approaching Isis forces!
Pickie Park Bangor - Open Air Amusement Park in Bangor
Pickie Park in Bangor is a great place to visit for some family fun in Northern Ireland. Pickie Park is well known for its pool, one of the fun things to do in Bangor for kids when the sun is shining. Check out this Video of Bangor Pickie Park.
Bangor city could attract tourists and visitors for several reasons and the one most famous of them all is Bangor Harbour or Marina and since it comes to this marina, Pickie Park is another place that people tend to go to and have some fun family time for the different games and activities which they could do inside.
Pickie Park was opened at Bangor marina in county Down, Northern Ireland, to attract all the different members of the family; those who want to have some fun and those who just want something a little bit different to enjoy. This is a place that is welcoming all the different members of the family, young and old, because in addition to the different games and activities which are found there, there is also a cafe that the adults could sit at while giving their kids the chance to play a little bit, and when the weather is good, this will be considered the best place to sit at by the water.
There is something for everyone inside Pickie Park, if your kids are too young that they are still not allowed to enjoy any of the games and activities which are found there, they could play in the indoor play corner which is located inside the cafe and which houses an activity table, blackboard, play kitchen and a selection of toys and coloring sheets, so they could play there while the parents are sitting there watching them out while drinking something at the cafe.
From the different activities and games which are offered at Pickie Park, there is the swans in the lake, the Pickie puffer, water walking, the pirate slide, crazy golf, electric cars, disco ducks and the play park, so your kids will definitely find something which they will enjoy and have some fun playing with.
It is always beautiful to play while you are surrounded by the water and that is what Pickie Park offers to its visitors, but there are different attractions found there as well - picking up an ice cream while spending your time there is always a good option, just trust our experience at the place :-)
This fun park is at the gateway to the Marine Gardens which is a good place for those who want to have a nice walk. At this place, the Marine Gardens, one will be offered with different beautiful views of Bangor Bay and the hills of Antrim beyond; you will just walk around a little bit, enjoy the beautiful scenes and eventually take a seat and cherish all that is viewed in front of you.
Bangor is known to be a large town in county Down, Northern Ireland, it is a seaside resort on the southern side of Belfast Lough and within the Belfast Metropolitan Area. There are different things and attractions that could be seen and visited there and the most important of them all is Bangor marina which is the largest marina in Northern Ireland that opened back in 1989 that became very well known for providing a berth in the centre of the city ( It is not just about the marina in Bangor city, but there are also some other attractions to refer to: first of all, we have to mention the restaurants that offer seafood or even traditional Irish food and which are very close to the harbour that one could go to while being there, and then comes all the other different attractions that could be checked there and which include the famous McKee Clock, Bangor Walled Garden, Bangor Old Custom House, Bangor Market House, Bangor Castle, Bangor Abbey, Bangor Carnegie Library, Castle Park, Clandeboye Estate, Clandeboye Park and Somme Heritage Centre.
Bangor is not far from Belfast and thus it gives people the chance to visit it easily without having to worry about the amount of time which they will spend in reaching their destination - and this is another reason why Bangor Marina is usually visited from people on different times and they are sometimes coming from Belfast.
We have visited Bangor, we have been to Bangor Marina ( we also visited Pickie Park for some fun with the family ( and we definitely suggest the three places for those who will be in Bangor - that's of course comes in addition to the other destinations and attractions which we have mentioned above, it all depends on the amount of time you will spend in the city.
Pickie Park is always a good idea for having some fun and enjoying a good whether by the marina, having an ice cream, and sitting there enjoying the weather.
Pickie Park should be your next choice while you are in Bangor, if you haven't been there yet (
