North Vancouver Streetcar 153
North Vancouver B.C. Electric Railway streetcar 153, built in 1908 by J.G. Brill, ran until 1947. It was sold to a farm at Ryder Lake, near Chilliwack, and remained there until the late 1970s when Vancouver transit employee and enthusiast Brian Kelly retrieved it and stored it for restoration. During a number of years at Mahon Park in North Vancouver the car was rebuilt, and featured in the Canada Day parade on 1 July 2019. It is now located in the new location for the North Vancouver Museum on Esplanade at Lonsdale Quay, opening in 2020.
North Vancouver Museum at the Pipeshop - Defeated by NV City Council
In a closed door session of council held January 11th 2016, the City of North Vancouver's support for a new museum in the Pipe-Shop was withdrawn, and the 5 million dollar matching donation agreement was terminated. The Mayor's 'Slate' voted as a block against continuing support for the Pipe-Shop Museum vision. The question is why?
Why A Museum ?
Why At The Shipyards ?
Why In The Pipe-Shop ?
Museums are often considered places at which we store relics, so that the very few who are interested, can look-back upon our history. While traditional Museums are generally used to display artifacts, that is not the concept which the North Vancouver Museum & Archives envisaged for this new state of the art facility.
Which brings us to our first question: ‘Why A Museum'.
Our 4 square mile City, the City of North Vancouver, is but a minuscule foot print on the planet, yet at points throughout our history we have done great things. It can reasonably be argued that our City, and the greater North Shore, have played a strategic part in shaping the outcome of World War II.
Looking back at the Wallace Shipyards which in 1921 became Burrard Drydock Company, this City's contribution to the Allied Forces in World War II is clearly evident. During the years 1940 through 1945 - Burrard Drydock was the busiest shipyard in all of Canada. During the Second World War, Burrard Drydock built 109 Park and Fort Liberty-class freighters, along with assorted corvettes, minesweepers and LSTs, as well as several Admiralty maintenance ships. It also converted and outfitted 19 escort carriers for the Royal Navy. At its peak, Burrard Drydock employed 14,000 workers, including 1,000 women.
Over the years Burrard Drydock experienced several ownership changes, eventually becoming Versatile Pacific Shipyards in 1985. The enterprise went bankrupt in 1992 with the Federal Governments decision to cancel the Polar 8 shipbuilding contract. The last employees were laid-off and the assets and shipyard lands were sold off to developers.
Without the supplies carried by those Liberty Ships to war torn Europe and Asia, Allied Forces would have fallen to German and Japanese forces. Had that occurred, the lines which today define national boundaries would be far different.
The City of North Vancouver played a strong, vibrant and important role in global history. We have a storied past that needs telling, it needs a proper place to tell it! Not just anyplace! The right place!

Party at the Pier 2011, North Vancouver, BC, Canada
The Lower Lonsdale Business Association presents North Vancouver's Annual Party at the Pier, at the new Shipbuilder's Square located at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue.
Voted one of the best musical festivals on the North Shore, this event offers family-friendly entertainment and activities throughout the weekend. The festival takes place rain or shine!
Party at the Pier host numerous marine-themed activities and displays, along with entertainment on the Shipbuilder's Square stage and adjacent piers. Some of the lower mainland's best musical talents are on board. Also watch out for strolling entertainment; face painters; visiting mascots, balloon creations, a bouncy castle, North Vancouver Museum & Archives interpretive tours and much, much more!
Visiting vessels at the Burrard Dry dock pier include three Canadian Maritime Coastal Defense ships.
The Party at the Pier could not be possible without the generous support of major sponsors for the event which include: many of the North Shore's major waterfront industries, the City of North Vancouver and the North Shore Outlook.
The Lower Lonsdale Business Association also organizes the annual Lower Lonsdale Fall Festival which takes place in September and the annual Christmas Festival of Lights Celebration in December. Both events are located at the Shipyard.

« Une communauté en guerre : North Vancouver et la construction navale »
North Vancouver Museum and Archives
