The Auckland central business district (CBD), also called the city centre by Auckland Council, is the geographical and economic heart of the Auckland metropolitan area. It is the area in which Auckland was established in 1840, by William Hobson.
The CBD is one of the most densely developed places in New Zealand, with many commercial and some residential developments packed into a space of only 433 hectares (1,070 acres). The area is made up of the city's largest concentration of skyscrapers and businesses. Bounded by several major motorways and by the harbour coastline in the north, it is surrounded further out by mostly suburban areas; it is bounded on the North by Waitematā Harbour, east by Parnell, southeast by Grafton, south by Mount Eden, southwest by Newton, west by Freemans Bay and northwest by Viaduct Harbour.
Queen Street is the major commercial thoroughfare in the Auckland CBD, Auckland, New Zealand's main population centre. It starts at Queens Wharf on the Auckland waterfront, adjacent to the Britomart Transport Centre and the Downtown Ferry Terminal, and runs increasingly more steeply uphill for almost three kilometres in a mostly straight south-southwesterly direction towards the Karangahape Road ridge, and the residential suburbs in the interior of the Auckland isthmus.
Auckland Apartment For Sale - 501/217 Great North Road, Grey Lynn NZ
One of the best finds in the Greater Ponsonby area and truly unexpected.
Breath-taking panorama from the city to the Waitakere ranges, look out to a horizon of blue and green from this Penthouse apartment. Defining life for 2020, you will reap the benefit of being the only residence on the top floor, ensuring privacy and seclusion.
217 North is eight apartments designed by Paul Brown Architects, completed in 2015. The Penthouse has 180 sq m of interior and a whopping 30 sq m more on the north west facing deck, giving room to move and yet still lock up and leave. Sun-filled and private, the floor plan flows seamlessly for indoor outdoor life, from the beautiful kitchen with scullery, to the deck with exterior heating for those spectacular sun sets over the Waitakare Ranges.
The Kauri timber floors are an amazing legacy to cherish. Central cooling and heating is supplemented by a cosy gas fire and underfloor tiled heating.
The main bedroom suite is luxuriously large and the freestanding bath and double vanity plus dressing room are uncompromising. Add an office, ample storage and large separate laundry seldom found in an apartment, topped off with two car parks.
Access to all main routes around the city is a huge benefit and Ponsonby Central is a 15 minute walk away.

More info on Queen Street, Auckland taken from Wikipedia:
Queen Street is the major commercial thoroughfare in the Auckland CBD, Auckland, New Zealand's main population centre. It starts at Queens Wharf on the Auckland waterfront, adjacent to the Britomart Transport Centre and the Downtown Ferry Terminal, and runs increasingly more steeply uphill for almost three kilometres in a mostly straight south-southwesterly direction towards the Karangahape Road ridge, and the residential suburbs in the interior of the Auckland isthmus.
Named after Queen Victoria, Queen Street was an early development of the new town of Auckland (founded in 1840), although initially the main street was intended to be Shortland Street, running parallel to the shore of Commercial Bay.
The early route of Queen Street led up the middle of a gully following the bank of the Waihorotiu Stream (later bounded in as the 'Ligar Canal'). This canal was culverted beneath the street from the 1870s onward, allowing for further development of the street to be undertaken. The course of the stream is still reflected today in the slight bend of lower Queen Street. From north of Shortland Street, Queen Street is built on land reclaimed from the sea in the late 19th century.
There are several other 'Queen Streets' in the greater Auckland area, mostly in suburbs that were separate towns before being absorbed by a growing central city. Auckland was also called the Queen City since before the turn of the 20th century, though that term is now overshadowed by the nickname City of Sails.
Settlement in the Queen Street area began in 1841 with a number of wooden buildings along the western side, following the general path of the Waihorotiu Stream according to the plans set out by surveyor Felton Mathew. While the street was metalled in 1843 ('metal' is a New Zealand term for gravel road), the natural stream still often overflowed its banks, and the area was still swampy. This led to canalisation and later covering-over of the stream.
After a fire in 1858 destroyed around 50 buildings in High Street and Shortland Street, the commercial district began to shift towards Queen Street instead, and the first brick and plaster buildings of the 1860s started to cement this move, with the Bank of New Zealand building (only the façade extant today) being one of the first examples. Fires however still continued to plague the new town, with one in 1873 wiping out another 54 buildings in the Queen Street area between Wellesley Street West and Grey Street (today Greys Avenue). The fires, amongst other things, led to the establishment of the Auckland Volunteer Fire Service.
In the 1880s, the first horse-drawn buses began connecting Queen Street with areas such as Ponsonby Road and Remuera. In 1900, the first motorcar was admired on the street, and in 1902 the street was finally asphalted, the first street in New Zealand. The same year the first electric trams also arrived, to provide services until 1956.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw a large number of imposing buildings constructed, such as the Smith & Caughey's building, the Auckland Town Hall and the General Post Office at the waterfront, later to become the Britomart Transport Centre. By that time, the street was popular for events such as parades and festivities, as well as for political activities such as the strike demonstrations of 1913. During the second half of the 20th century, many of the older buildings on Queen Street were demolished to make space for larger office buildings.

Auckland domain, Auckland city, New Zealand
Auckland domain, New Zealand, long version
We went to Auckland domain to see the cherry blossom trees in the early October.
Auckland Domain is the oldest park in Auckland and is located in the central city. The two main popular attractions located in Auckland domain are the Auckland Museum and the Winter Garden.
The information below is from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Auckland Domain is Auckland's oldest park, and at 75 hectares one of the largest in the city. Located in the central suburb of Grafton, the park contains all of the explosion crater and most of the surrounding tuff ring of the Pukekawa volcano.
The park is home to one of Auckland's main tourist attractions, the Auckland War Memorial Museum, which sits prominently on the crater rim (tuff ring). Several sports fields occupy the floor of the crater, circling to the south of the cone, while the rim opposite the Museum hosts the cricket pavilion and Auckland City Hospital. The Domain Wintergardens, with two beautiful glass houses, lie on the north side of the central scoria cone. The fernery has been constructed in an old quarry in part of the cone. The duck ponds lie in the northern sector of the explosion crater, which is breached to the north with a small overflow stream.

Auckland City, New Zealand a Billion Dollar Transformation Plan
Auckland's central population has doubled to 50,000 and it's time to change the city's focus.

Shane Jones fumes at 'Soviet' Ports of Auckland waterfront carpark. No funds for a waterfront stadium in Auckland Council's budget.
We've got to turn this city into a city that's focused on people not cars, he told Newshub Nation on Saturday.
The changes would see Quay Street turn into a waterfront boulevard with new bus stops and a downtown park by the Ferry Building.
Lower Queen Street outside Britomart will become a civic square - catering to the 50 per cent increase in foot traffic since 2012.
But not everyone is a fan of the focus on pedestrians over vehicles.
If you want a whole lot of people, who go shopping, to not come to the CBD then make it car-free, said National Infrastructure Spokesperson Judith Collins.
The biggest changes are being driven by upcoming America's Cup - which MBIE estimates could boost New Zealand’s economy by more than $600 million.
The changes would see the Viaduct becoming more pedestrian friendly and a new bridge replacing the crossing toward Wynyard Quarter.
In September, the Environment Court approved wharf extensions for America's Cup village and several bases, to be built in time for the 2021 event.
The industrial buildings that currently occupy Wynyard Quarter would make way for new apartments, while the tank farm on Wynyard Point would be replaced with more housing, office space and parkland.
That parkland would create a green link between the waterfront and Victoria Park, and then on to Albert Park in the City Centre thanks to the transformation of Victoria Street into a Linear Park.
But the green link won't stop at Albert Park if developer Bill Reid gets his way.
For the past 30 years he has championed the construction of Te Ara Tomo - The Subterranean City, which would open up the old air-raid tunnels under the park, dug to shelter Aucklanders during World War Two.
Two elevator portals at Princes Street and Symonds Street will connect students to AUT and the University of Auckland.
In the other tunnels, there are plans for cafes, wine and cheese boutiques, a museum, and even a glow-worm cave.
Reid says the construction will be privately funded, with users paying a toll to pass through.
The tunnels are not officially recognised by Council planners yet but are expected to be included in the updated City Centre Masterplan.
The tunnels will make it easier for cyclists and pedestrians coming from Parnell to access the City Rail Link, set to be opened by 2024.
The underground rail loop will see the addition of Aotea Station and Karangahape Station and a major upgrade of Mount Eden Station.
The City Rail Link will also transform Britomart from a dead-end to a through station, more than doubling the number of trains able to use the rail network.

Cost and Requirements to Move Auckland Ports to Northport
Ports of Auckland will outgrow its current location on the city's waterfront within 25 years.

Exclusive: 'No Point' Investing in Northport Without Building Rail Link - Working Group
The Government's been told there is no point investing in Northport without a rail connection between it and Auckland.
The Upper North Island Supply Chain Strategy Working Group has released the first of three reports investigating the freight network between Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Tauranga.
• Auckland to Northland: Government set to make port move decision
• Winston Peters, Shane Jones try to get ball rolling on Northland rail promise
• Northland rail 'going to happen', Winston Peters promises
The working group was asked by the Government to seriously consider Northport as an alternative location for the Ports of Auckland, expected to outgrow its current location on the city's waterfront within 25 years.
But the chair, Wayne Brown, told Newshub Nation that rail needs to be top priority if Northport is to grow.
The Government will have to understand the importance of running a proper rail line through to Northland and just like it did to the Bay of Plenty it could become the North of plenty he says.
The report says the Bay of Plenty and Waikato have seen significant benefit from Government investment in rail, with 49 percent of the freight passing through the Port of Tauranga on trains.
In Northland just one percent of freight is moved by train, and Northport is served solely by trucks - recording 150,000 truck movements in the year to June 2018.
The roads in Northland are being hammered by trucks. The best way to get the trucks off the road is on trains, says Brown.
Connecting Northport to the Northland Auckland rail line was a key campaign pledge from New Zealand First at the last election.
It's a no-brainer, it's impossible to understand how that sort of neglect could have gone on for decades, so pressing on with [the rail link to Northport] we will be, says Deputy Prime Minister and New Zealand First leader Winston Peters.
The Ministry of Transport's business case looking into whether the Northland Auckland line should be upgraded and connected to Northport is due to be released soon.
The next two reports from the working group will take its findings into consideration as it seeks to find a new location for the Ports of Auckland.
However, National's Infrastructure spokesperson Judith Collins is skeptical about moving the port outside Auckland.
This concept of [the Ports of Auckland] being shifted up to Northland, which is Winston Peters and Shane Jones idea to win a seat, all that does is take around 170,000 jobs that are currently in Auckland, and add enormous cost to freight coming into Auckland as well, she says.
One in three New Zealanders live in Auckland so much of the country's freight is currently imported straight into the largest market.
Collins says it's important that the public has confidence in the advice Governments are given, which is why National supports the development of an Infrastructure Commission.
Anything that comes out of these working groups and commissions should be something that future Governments can look at and say 'we can use that too', she says.
Auckland Council's 2016 Port Future Study recommended locations in the Manukau Harbour, at Muriwai and in the Firth of Thames.
The working group leans away from anything on Auckland's West Coast, citing concerns from the marine insurance industry about dangerous conditions.
It found the Firth of Thames more viable, but noted barriers such as large amounts of infrastructure investment and resource consent required.
Brown says the Port of Tauranga has already been taking on some of Auckland's operations, but cautioned that the port had its own constraints.
It's limited by the single point Kaimai Tunnel and it's limited by the growing consternation of the citizens there about congestion, he says.
Northport on the other hand sits on 49 hectares surrounded by 180 hectares zoned for port use.
However, the report raises concerns about ownership of the three ports, in particular Northport.
