Join us as we journey Auckland to Wellington on the north island of New Zealand.
The north island of New Zealand is picturesque as the lush greenery of the landscape changes. There are more than enough sheep to count on this trip. (New Zealand has more sheep than anywhere else on the planet)
The Northern Explorer passenger train consists of coach cars, an open air observation car as well as a bistro cafe with a wide variety of food and drinks. Along the way, step off the train and explore the towns of yesteryear gone by. If you are planning a trip to the bottom of the world, consider adding stops along the route of the Northern Explorer.
Are you a Lord of the Rings fan? Did you know that most of the movie was filmed in the little village of Hobbiton on New Zealand's North Island? In fact, many motion pictures were filmed in New Zealand.

In December 2017, we hop on-board The Great Journeys of New Zealand's 'Northern Explorer' scenic rail journey at the capital city of Wellington for the ride over the 680km long train service through some of the North Island's most beautiful and stunning scenery, right into the big city of Auckland. We capture scenic highlights along our journey through the North Island in this musical production, including the Kapiti Coast, Rangitikei River, the Central Plateau and the famous Raurima Spiral. A new feature in our videos is also the use of narration, from your's truly and will be intended to be used more often in our future productions! Sit back and enjoy what New Zealand's North Island has to offer on-board one of the country's great journeys! Northern Explorer Train from Wellington to Auckland
Our Auckland trip started off with a 11 hour train ride exploring the North Island on the Northern Explorer. We ate, read ,went outside on the viewing platform at horrendous speeds. More eating until we finally made it to our destination! We also shot some lovely NZ countryside while all of this was happening!
Auckland here we come!

The Northern Explorer train from Wellington to Auckland
Take the train from Wellington to Auckland aboard The Northern Explorer from where you can enjoy New Zealand's outstanding scenery from one of the comfortable new panoramic carriages. This production uses video film and photos taken from inside the train, the locomotive cab and the lineside. See the fast changing New Zealand rail scene as old trains give way to new modern electric and diesel traction. Electrification has been extended around Wellington, now the attention is on the infrastructure improvements around Auckland as it too will be introducing electric suburban trains in the near future.

Kiwi Rail's 'Northen Explorer' runs between Auckland and Wellington on the North Island of the country.
Whilst not the fastest way to travel between the two major cities, it is certainly a spectacular journey through some amazing scenery, which you can look forward to seeing in this video.
On the occasion I travelled the train was hauled by DFB7077 with a four car consist, which I believe is normal for this service. The consist included two seating carriages (no classes on this journey), a cafe car and an open air carriage. I had a good look around these in the video and got a fair bit of video of the carriages themselves.

One of the most beautiful railways in the world has had one of its most successful summers on record. New Zealand's longest running passenger service, the #NorthernExplorer is a long distance scenic train service running between Auckland and Wellington, stopping at Palmerston North, Ohakune, National Park and Hamilton.
The journey through Tongariro National Park, with its three spectacular volcanic mountains – Tongariro, Ngāuruhoe and Ruapehu – is a highlight, a place of extremes and surprises, where snow-blanketed fields, ancient lava flows and dense beech forests can be seen side by side.

In this video clip we travel between Palmerston North and Taihape aboard the Northern Explorer, formerly the Overlander . If time permits the trip between Auckland and Wellington aboard The Northern Explorer with it's new panoramic carriages is a great way the see central North Island . The clip was taken using a GoPro camera, edited with Pinnacle Studio and finally published using Avid Studio.
