Future Oslo - Cultural Center for Norwegian Waterfront by Nuan Studio
nuan studio has won the competition to design oslo‘s cultural center for norwegian waterfront (CCNW), a contemporary building that will incorporate a new public square, exhibition spaces, a library, and an auditorium. the proposal draws from the country’s mountainous landscapes and icy waterfalls, with all its elements wrapped elegantly in a monolithic crystallized glass facade and vertical features that enhance the reference to the ornament quality of frozen waterfalls.
located in the neighborhood of forsvartmuseet (the norwegian armed forces museum) and nasjonallmuseet of arkitektur (the national museum of architecture), which has become a small cultural citadel in oslo, the cultural center for norwegian waterfront (CCNW) will provide new civic spaces, where the local community will be able to share experiences of historical and cultural value. nuan studio‘s winning proposal encloses all spaces in a single glazing screen, while a warm and cozy atmosphere shines through it, contrasting the coldness of the transparent surface and the surrounding environment.
from the public square in front, visitors enter into the lobby, where a large atrium invites them through a cultural journey. halls become vantage points from which they can observe the city at different heights, while main parts of the program, such as the library, exhibition spaces and the auditorium are arranged gradually, stacking up to a 26 meter height. the roof terrace, which can be accessed at different levels, offers the best views of oslo. the building’s geometry slowly emerges from the ground up, marking its presence as new icon for the city.

Norwegian medical training facility designed not to look like a hospital

In this exclusive interview from Inside Festival, Per Anders Borgen of Ratio Architects explains how the design team used raw materials to remove the institutional look from the interior of a student facility at St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim, Norway.
The Knowledge Centre by Norwegian studios Ratio Architects and Nordic Office of Architecture is a medical student research, training and teaching facility at St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim.
The outside of the building features a black and white glass facade, designed together with artist Anne Aanerud, which provides shade from the sun as well as decoration.
Architecture and sunshading form the facade and the expression of the building, Borgen explains. That is connected to a very high demand on energy reduction.

Reiulf Ramstad Interview: The Nordic Way of Building
Learn about the intriguing philosophy and projects of the award-winning Norwegian Reiulf Ramstad Architects in this interview with its founder, Reiulf Ramstad: “Architecture is on trial in relation to the development of the way we live.”
“We believe that architecture makes sense when it’s anchored in the locations where it’s built and the people who are going to use it.” Ramstad isn’t occupied with “the zeitgeist of architecture,” but rather tries to uncover the character of a given place before starting to design for it: “Each project has a story which is like a novel that contains its own axis. And to find the axis for each project is what occupies me.”
Reiulf Ramstad Architects’ way of testing architecture was very significant for the Trollstigen Visitor Centre (2014) project, where they had to create test elements in order to find out whether they would resist the surrounding environment: “I believe we’ll need that insight in the years to come because the climate will change, the weather will be more brutal.”
“The climate has made us very pragmatic … And that pragmatism prompts you to do what is necessary.” The outlying areas – that exist in Nordic countries such as his homeland Norway – hold a great interest to Ramstad due to their uniqueness and the possibilities they represent: “In the big global melting pot, we end up living the same way, eating the same food, wearing the same clothes. In that way outlying areas are a kind of test bed for devising new things.”
Reiulf Ramstad (b. 1962) is the founder, Graduate Architect and Design Director of Reiulf Ramstad Architects (RRA) – an award-winning architecture, landscape architecture and design firm founded in 1995 and based in Oslo, Norway. The firm is internationally known for their work in Norway, and their designs range from private residential to large civic works, such as schools, restaurants, public transit stations, museums and tourist routes. Cultural Centre for Norwegian Waterfront by Nuan Studio
CCNW is located strategically in the heart of Oslo, Norway. The site has become a potential point of attraction from the sea activities as well as other parts of the city. CCNW focus on providing the maximum of civic spaces and experiential journey from ground to top roof terrace which is accessible at different levels. The main programmes such as library, exhibition spaces and auditorium are also arranged gradually offering the best views of Oslo.
Both outdoor civic spaces in a form of roof landscape and indoor programmes are well interconnected. These elements are wrapped elegantly with monolithic crystallized glass façade and vertical features enhancing the ornament quality of frozen waterfall. The vertical features also serve as shading fins but yet the facade is very transparent. The civic journey starts from the artificial lake at the foothill with an outdoor amphitheatre for public seating and occasional outdoor performances.
At the next destination, the visitors arrive at the secret garden partially enclosed by external glass facade; embellished with Nordic tall trees and leaving a curiosity from the street visibility. The visitors finally arrive at the highest point of roof terrace. This is the climax of journey offering the 360-degree view to the city of Oslo. Through the public space, the visitors enter to the lobby, offering a grand volume of atrium with café lounge and seating area at the ground level. Source by Nuan Studio. Info project

Text description provided by the architects. The project will enhance the experience of the Trollstigen plateau’s location and nature. Thoughtfulness regarding features and materials will underscore the site’s temper and character, and well-adapted, functional facilities will augment the visitor’s experience. The architecture is to be characterised by clear and precise transitions between planned zones and the natural landscape. Through the notion of water as a dynamic element –from snow, to running and then falling water- and rock as a static element, the project creates a series of prepositional relations that describe and magnify the unique spatiality of the site.

Text description provided by the architects. The holiday home is located near the village Geilo, a popular skiing destination in the valley Hallingdal. Ski resorts are abundant around the lodge, with a freestyle terrain park right next to the site. Out of winter season, the mountains provide excellent hiking opportunities as well as other sporting activities.
The family of four with anticipation of a fifth addition provided a straight-forward program for their mountain lodge: four bedrooms, separate living and dining areas, a youth lounge and a mezzanine for the younger children. In addition a small annex would accommodate guests and visiting grandparents.

Tendencias Noruega, Architecture of Norway

Text description provided by the architects. Reiulf Ramstad Architects has been involved in designing a new kindergarten for Fagerborg Congregation in central Oslo. The kindergarten offers 2 units for children between 1-3 years old and 2 units for children between 3-6 years old.
Gross building area is around 1200m2.
There are many cultural heritage guidelines to be considered in the project site. The area is characterised by residential buildings from 1900-1950. As a requirement from the local authority, the kindergarten is to have a contemporary expression. With its location in the middle of a small city park, the kindergarten has an outdoor area that is protected like an enclosed garden. The planning solution enables the 4 kindergarten units to function both independently and together as required. All units share a common area and a kitchen in the heart of the building. Administration is placed on the upper floor separate from children areas.
