Novosibirsk, Siberia, Russia
Novosibirsk (Новосиби́рск) is the third most populous city in Russia after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It is the most populous city in Asian Russia, with a population of 1,473,754 as of the 2010 Census. It is the administrative center of Novosibirsk Oblast as well as of the Siberian Federal District. The city is located in the southwestern part of Siberia on the banks of the Ob River adjacent to the Ob River Valley.
Novosibirsk is a large industrial center. The industrial complex consists of 214 large and average sized industrial enterprises. These produce more than two-thirds of all industrial output of the Novosibirsk region. Leading industries are airspace (Chkalov's Novosibirsk Aircraft Plant), nuclear fuel (Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant), turbo- and hydroelectric generators (NPO ELSIB), textile machinery (Textilmach), agriculture machinery (NPO Sibselmash), electronics components and devices production (Novosibirsk Factory and Design Bureau of Semiconductor Devices, OXID Novosibirsk Plant of Radio components), metallurgy and metal working (Kuzmina's Novosibirsk Metallurgical Plant, Novosibirsk Tin Plant OJSC, and JSC Plant of Rare Metals).
Novosibirsk is the first city in Siberia in which a subway system was established (the Novosibirsk Metro, opened in 1985). It is a major stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway and north end of Turkestan–Siberia Railway.

Ceiridwen accompanies Anastasiya Kharlamova to Novosibirsk fox farm.MOD
During research for my latest book PART WILD (Scribner 2011), I traveled to Russia to visit the fox farm in Novosibirsk. (This is not a fur farm.) The experiment, started in the 1950s by Dmitri Belyaev, seeks the genetic mechanisms involved in domestication. While a fascinating experiment, it is nonetheless heartbreaking to see these foxes in 3x3 wire cages with no stimulation of any kind. They rarely come out of their cages, and those foxes bred for tame behavior and an eagerness for contact with people rarely get it. In my opinion, this is one fundamental aspect of the experiment that should be changed. differences between wild' and domestic. They rarely come out of their cages, and those foxes bred for tame behavior and an eagerness for contact with people rarely get it. Art and the city - feeling the urban and suburban in modern Russia
(24 Nov 2019) LEAD IN
Beyond the iconic vistas Moscow's suburbs are inspiring a new generation of artists.
Now an massive pan-city project is celebrating the art inspired by everyday life in the Russian capital.
STORY-LINE:
As sleet falls on a cold November day, communist-era apartment blocks dominating Moscow's suburban skyline look bleak and forbidding.
But it's precisely these sprawling city outskirts that are the focus of a major international art exhibition, just opened in the Russian capital.
'Beyond the Centre' is staging art events across Moscow's vast urban space starting this fall and culminating in March 2020.
One of the featured artists, Pasmur Rachuiko, paints the Russia he sees everyday.
All these characters are from my personal world; in fact, they live in your daily routine. When you live in Russia, you just scroll through your Facebook feed, all this symbolic environment is all around you he says.
Hailing from southern Russia, self-taught painter Rachuiko offers an extreme outsider's view of Moscow reality.
Burka-clad figures, policemen and wolves pose in the suburbs, gangsters have angels' wings and young women carrying AK-47 rifles stare out of his canvases.
Pasmur depicts himself as 'everyman' amongst this cast of new Russian archetypes.
The paintings sparked public criticism on social media and disapproval from Moscow's culture department.
But Pasmur has support from the liberal arts establishment
Simon Mraz, director of the Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, and curator of the exhibition, says to find the real Moscow you have to go outside the centre to where most of the city's 12.6 million people live.
They all come to Moscow with some dreams, facing struggles and hoping for a better future. But they will not find it, all these people can impossibly realise the future in Red Square, definitely not in the Kremlin, they will never live there, says Mraz.
The city outskirts span its urban history - from 'sleeping' districts built by Soviet town planners to new residential areas strung around its boundary.
A United Nations (UN) report this year concluded that despite steep population decline in Russia, Moscow is growing, fuelled by a steady influx of people in search of jobs and a better life.
Modern Russia is reflected in the capital, a demographic with complex socio-economic layers, whose ethnic mix covers the entire former Soviet space.
In its broad scope 'Beyond the Centre' offers an investigation rather than a complete portrait of Moscow.
It shows a capital city still in formation, experiencing the huge challenges facing Russia in the 21st century.
Urban renewal hasn't yet reached Lyublino, a working-class suburb.
Here in a dilapidated industrial zone, the 'Museum of Industrial Culture' houses a private collection of discarded objects, amassed by former auto engineer Lev Zheleznyov.
It's a social history of over 70 years of communism, told though ordinary things people recognise from a shared past.
This is a museum of memory. Therefore, people come not even for information on an object because not everyone is interested in how many lamps a receiver has, what type the receiver is, but it's interesting for them that such receiver was in someone's home, says Zheleznyov.
Mraz chose Zheleznyov's rusting hangar over Moscow's big state institutions for his exhibition's key collaboration with Austria's prestigious Vienna Museum.

Aug 13, 2012 Russia_Medvedev tells United Russia to focus on real world, not Internet
Prime Minister and United Russia Party leader Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting on Friday with candidates for the head of the party's Central Executive Committee.
After Dmitry Travkin was named as committee chief, the premier discussed the party's strategy and the role of the internet.
He urged party members to avoid basing their agenda on information spread on the Internet.
If someone thinks that the online world is the real world, they are totally mistaken. To use this Internet terminology -- we all live offline. And this offline world is a lot more exciting, because it is real with all its problems. I am raising this issue, because often we have this distorted view of United Russia and the political situation in general, as well as our society, he said.

EATING PINECONE PANCAKES IN RUSSIA | Trans-Siberian Railway
In this chapter of our Russian adventure along the Trans-Siberian Railway, we stop in Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk and try some unique Russian food!
We're finally in Siberia after about a week on the train. Our first adventure is hiking The Columns. These beautiful magma pillars were formed when lava spurted up from an ancient seabed and cooled as they came in contact with the water. The seabed washed away, turned into a forest, and voila. The perfect place for a Russian travel vlog.
We also found a Siberian specialty food in Krasnoyarsk. Pinecones. Being Canadian, I didn't know you could eat these things. We have snack on a few on top of pancakes during this journey as well.
A bit of a background story. This is a train journey of 10,000 km across Russia, the biggest country in the world. 25 days to visit Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Ulan-Ude, and Vladivostok.

Archaeologists in Russia claim ancient toy find
(29 Oct 2016) An ancient object which is believed to be a 4,000 year-old rattle for children was found recently in the Vengerovo archeological complex in the Novosibirsk region, southern Russia.
The rattle looks like the head of a bear and is believed to be from the early Bronze age.
It is made of clay and has small objects inside which create sound when shaken.
Marina Nesterova, research associate at the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, says that the finding is really unique, not only because it is rare but also because it still has its purpose.
In this case we have an object which still functions, still sounds the same as it did almost 4000 years ago, she said.
It still has to be confirmed what the actual purpose for the object was, as it might have also been used by shamans to perform rituals.
The use of rattles is quite common among shamans which they used to fight away evil spirits, they used not only tambourines but also rattles, Nesterova said.
Scientists have run complex tests to determine the rattle's age and will conduct further examinations to find out what is inside it and how it was made.

Horrifying Hailstorm Pelts Southwest China's Guiyang City
A ferocious hailstorm and heavy rain battered the city of Guiyang, capital of southwest China's Guizhou Province, causing scenes of chaos across the city on Wednesday night.
The downtown was seriously flooded by the deluge, with the precipitation level rising to 23 millimeters in an hour. The dramatic hailstorm brought traffic to a standstill as huge hailstones pelted the city, with the largest having a diameter of 15 millimeters.
Police officers were mobilized to important intersections to direct the traffic amid the challenging weather conditions.
Our sub-office has been working on the second-tier contingency plan. All police officers, no matter if they are off-duty or on-call, were ordered to get to work and control the traffic in this district, said Yang Ying, a local police officer.
As well as police, firefighters, city management officers, and municipality administration workers were deployed to places where they were most needed to help drain water and ensure people's safety.
It was reported that two residents were trapped after hailstones accumulated up to their waists in the basement of a building.
A firefighter jumped into the marble-sized hails and waded towards the trapped people, eventually helping them to safety.
According to firefighting authorities, a total of 71 people were rescued overnight.
Traffic returned to normal after the water was drained at around 01:00 in the morning.
