Exploring the gardens and woodland at Nuffield Place! The home of William Morris of Morris Motors. Nuffield Place is in the village of Huntercombe, Oxfordshire. Nuffield Place is in the care of the National Trust.
Henley-on-Thames
The start of a little road trip of ours. We start in Henley-on-Thames, just under 40 miles west of the capital, London. It's a couple of weeks before the world famous and preparations are under way, including a fly-past by a World War II Lancaster bomber. We were only in town for a couple of hours but it was glorious on an English summer's day.

Wallingford is an ancient market town and civil parish in the upper Thames Valley in England. Historically in Berkshire, it was transferred to Oxfordshire for the purposes of administration in 1974. Wallingford is situated 12 miles (19 km) north of Reading, 13 miles (21 km) south of Oxford and 11 miles (18 km) north west of Henley-on-Thames.
The town's royal but mostly ruined Wallingford Castle held high status in the early medieval period as a regular royal residence until the Black Death hit the town badly in 1349. Empress Matilda retreated here for the final time from Oxford Castle in 1141. The castle declined subsequently, much stone being removed to renovate Windsor Castle. Nonetheless the town's Priory produced two of the greatest minds of the age, the mathematician Richard of Wallingford and the chronicler John of Wallingford.
Wallingford is on the west bank of the River Thames downstream of Oxford and lies at the foot of the Chilterns. On the opposite bank are the villages of Crowmarsh Gifford and Newnham Murren, connected to the town by Wallingford Bridge, a 300 yard long medieval stone bridge crossing the river and adjacent flood plain. At southern end of the town is the settlement of Winterbrook. The town bypass crosses the river to the southwest over Winterbrook Bridge.
Wallingford grew up around an important crossing point of the River Thames. The place has been fortified since at least Anglo-Saxon times, when it was an important fortified borough of Wessex with the right to mint Royal coinage. It was enclosed with substantial earthworks by King Alfred the Great in the 9th century as part of a network of fortified towns known as burhs or burghs to protect Wessex against the Vikings.
Wallingford Castle was built soon afterwards and became a key strategic centre for the Empress Matilda's party during the civil war that began after her father Henry I's death. After the fall of Oxford Castle to Stephen in 1141, Matilda fled to Wallingford, according to some historic accounts in the snow under a moonlit sky.
Wallingford flourished as a trading centre throughout most of the Middle Ages, and Wallingford Priory produced two of the greatest minds of the age, the mathematician Richard of Wallingford and the chronicler John of Wallingford. After the opening of Abingdon Bridge in 1416 the town went into economic decline.
The River Thames has been a transport route for centuries and Wallingford's growth as a town relied partly on it. Coal was supplied from North East England by coaster to London and then by barge upriver to Wallingford. This supply could be unreliable in seasons when river currents were too strong or water levels were too low. In 1789 the Oxford Canal reached Oxford from Warwickshire and the Duke's Cut at Wolvercote gave it a connection to the Thames.
On 2 July 1866, the Wallingford and Watlington Railway was opened between Cholsey and Wallingford. Its relative speed and reliability enabled it to take a large share of goods previously carried on the Thames. Unfortunately, two months earlier, in May 1866, the Overend, Gurney & Co bank had crashed causing one of the severest financial crises of the 19th century.

Our Holiday in Streatley, Berkshire
Another wonderful trip with Mum and Dad, visiting Streatley, and surrounding areas between 27 - 30th May 2019. We stayed at the Swan Hotel, Streatley, near Reading. We visited Goring and walked along the River by the lock. On 30th May we visited Basildon Park (National Trust) and had lunch at the Perch and Pike, Goring. We walked to Lardon Chase. The following day we visited Nuffield Place (National Trust), Henley on Thames. This was the home of Sir William Morris, the English motor manufacturer and philanthropist. On 30th May we visited the village of Ewelme, and then Greys Court (National Trust), Henley on Thames. We ended with a walk across the Hambleden weir, Hambleden, Henley on Thames.

In this episode I go to Great Chalfield Manor near to Bradford on Avon. It is a manor house with a moat, although only partial nowadays. You can see me get stuck twice and run out of battery, so brace yourself for a belly-laugh or two.

In this episode I go to South Wales to visit a garden and house called Dyffyrn, although I had no idea how to pronounce it. It is a house fully accessible although the lift was out of order I assume it will be fixed at some point giving access to the upper floor.
The garden too, is pretty good with really good paths. This was probably the best place for access i have been to visit.

Tintagel Old Post Office is a 14th-century stone house, built to the plan of a medieval manor house, situated in Tintagel, Cornwall, United Kingdom. The house and its surrounding cottage garden are in the ownership of the National Trust, and the building is Grade I listed.
The name dates from the Victorian period when it briefly held a licence to be the letter receiving station for the district. The Trust has restored it to this condition. It was among the early acquisitions of the Trust (1903) and closes in the winter months

The Vyne is a Tudor manor house associated with King Henry 8th and other prominent figures in history
Located near Basingstoke, it is a large estate and house, which is under repair until the end of 2017.
In my tour around the house, I was confronted in public, being told to stop filming (but stills are ok) after a staff member chatted to me regarding the GoPro and equipment, but did not just tell me - instead of going off and reporting me. Even reception made no mention of it.
The saving grace was the roof top view.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Max Gate, home of Thomas Hardy
Max Gate, an austere but sophisticated town house a short walk from the town centre of Dorchester, was the home of Dorset's most famous author and poet Thomas Hardy. Hardy, who designed the house in 1885, wanted to show that he was part of the wealthy middle classes of the area, to reflect his position as a successful writer, and to enable him to enter polite society. The house was named after a nearby tollgate keeper called Mack.
Many of Hardy's possessions were dispersed before the Trust acquired the house, but we've furnished the rooms for you to enjoy the spaces he created to write and live in. He wrote some of his most famous novels here, including Tess of the d'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, as well as much of his poetry.
You will find the garden much as it was originally planned, with high walls and large trees encircling the property to preserve Hardy's privacy. The sundial, designed by Hardy, was erected in his memory.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Clouds Hill, home of Lawrence of Arabia

Clouds Hill is an isolated cottage near Wareham in the county of Dorset in South West England. It is the former home of T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and is now run as a writer's home museum by the National Trust. The site is in the parish of Turners Puddle in Purbeck District.
The small building has colourwashed brick walls and a tiled roof. It was probably built as forester's cottage in the early 19th century. The lintel over the door now bears a Greek inscription οὐ φροντὶς (Why Worry). It is now a Grade II* listed building as Clouds Hill (Lawrence of Arabia's Cottage); it was upgraded from Grade II in 2015.

It is a quirky 18th-century, 16 sided house with fascinating interior decoration and collections
This unique sixteen-sided house was described by Lucinda Lambton as having 'a magical strangeness that one might dream of only as a child'.
It was built for two spinster cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, on their return from a grand tour of Europe in the late 18th century. It contains many objects and mementoes of their travels.
The extraordinary interior decoration includes a feather frieze, gathered from native game birds and chickens, laboriously stuck down with isinglass.
There is also a fragile shell-encrusted gallery, said to contain nearly 25,000 shells, which can be viewed in its entirety using a touch screen 360 degree virtual tour.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Charlecote House and Park, Warwickshire

Charlecote Park (grid reference SP263564) is a grand 16th-century country house, surrounded by its own deer park, on the banks of the River Avon near Wellesbourne, about 4 miles (6 km) east of Stratford-upon-Avon and 5.5 miles (9 km) south of Warwick, Warwickshire, England. It has been administered by the National Trust since 1946 and is open to the public. It is a Grade I listed building.
The Lucy family owned the land since 1247. Charlecote Park was built in 1558 by Sir Thomas Lucy, and Queen Elizabeth I stayed in the room that is now the drawing room. Although the general outline of the Elizabethan house remains, nowadays it is in fact mostly Victorian. Successive generations of the Lucy family had modified Charlecote Park over the centuries, but in 1823, George Hammond Lucy (High Sheriff of Warwickshire in 1831) inherited the house and set about recreating the house in its original style.

Andy's National Trust Travel Blogs: Killerton House and Gardens
The Acland family, who left the estate to the Trust in 1944, did so for the benefit and enjoyment of everybody. Sir Thomas Acland wished to have garden and parkland fit for his family.
Killerton is an 18th-century house in Broadclyst, Exeter, Devon, England, which, with its hillside garden and estate, has been owned by the National Trust since 1944 and is open to the public. The National Trust displays the house as a comfortable home. On display in the house is a collection of 18th- to 20th-century costumes, originally known as the Paulise de Bush collection, shown in period rooms.
The estate covers some 2590 hectares (25.9 km2, 6400 acres).Included in the Estate is a steep wooded hillside with the remains of an Iron Age Hillfort on top of it, also known as Dolbury which has also yielded evidence of Roman occupation, thought to be a possible fort or marching camp within the Hillfort.
Killerton House itself and the Bear's Hut summerhouse in the grounds are Grade II* listed buildings.The gardens are Grade II* listed in the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens.
